S T O Y oyal Heart, oyal Heart The children will learn the story of how Joseph saved his family and forgave his brothers. Materials For the teacher: 1 deck of regular playing cards Preparation 1. Practice telling the ible Story using the deck of cards. 2. Separate all the hearts from the deck of cards. ntroducing the ible Story Direct the children to the story area. emind them that last week they heard some very difficult things that happened to Joseph: he was almost murdered, thrown into a pit, sold into slavery, accused of a crime he did not commit and then forgotten by someone who was supposed to help him get out of jail. Today, they are going to hear what happened to Joseph not long after he was forgotten in prison. oyal Hearts Have your ible open to Genesis 41. Tell the children that today s ible Story comes from Genesis 41 through 46. The ible says that two years after Joseph was forgotten, Pharaoh who was the king had a dream. He did not understand the dream so he sent for the wisest men in the land to come and tell him the meaning of his dream. No one could tell Pharaoh what his dream meant. One of the men who was there was the same man that Joseph had helped in prison. This man was an important servant of the king. He remembered Joseph and told Pharaoh about him. Pharaoh called for Joseph to come. The ible says that Joseph shaved and changed his clothes and then went before the king. Joseph told the king exactly what his dream meant and that it was a message from God. The king was so impressed with Joseph that he put him in charge of the whole land of gypt. He dressed Joseph in royal clothes and made him the second most powerful man in all the land. Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the king s service. Hold up the King, Queen and Jack of hearts. emind the children that because God was with Joseph, he became like a king in charge of the whole country! Pass out the three cards for three children to hold. oyal Hearts For seven years, there was a time of great success and abundance. Joseph knew that after these seven years would come seven years of famine when there would be nothing to harvest. During the seven good years, Joseph collected food and stored it away so that there would be plenty of food for the people during the famine. When the famine came, people came from all over the world to gypt to buy food. Some of the people who came to buy food were Joseph s brothers. They had no food in their land and they would die if they did not get some. Ten of Joseph s brothers came to gypt to get food. They did not recognize Joseph but he recognized them. At first he did not tell them who he was. He sent them back home to bring the youngest son enjamin, who was born after Joseph. The brothers were afraid of Joseph so they did as he said. When they returned with the youngest son, Joseph finally told them who he was. Joseph cried so loud that the people could hear all around him. The ible says that his brothers were terrified. They did not know what to say. ut Joseph told them to come close to him and he hugged and kissed them. He cried and they talked. Joseph told them not to be afraid. God had planned for all of this to happen so that they would be saved. Joseph told his brothers to go and get their father and come and live with him in gypt and they did. Take out the rest of the heart cards. Pass them out to the children. Share and Tell Tell the children to take turns standing up and, holding their cards, say one way that Joseph was royal like a king or one way that he was loyal or loving to his brothers. Then ask them to name one person that they are going to tell this week about Joseph. Continue until each child has had a chance. Close with a prayer for the children to have loyal hearts for their families like Joseph had for his. Teacher Tips Practice telling the story with feeling and expression. Cut out the medallions from copies of eproducible Page for the children. 4. Glue the medallions to the construction paper and punch with a hole a half inch from the top for the children. nstructions 1. n our ible Story, we learned that God blessed Joseph in many ways. Joseph was finally released from prison because he helped Pharoah understand his dream. Pharaoh believed that Joseph was a godly man and so he made Joseph ruler over gypt. While Joseph was in gypt, there was a terrible famine and Joseph s brothers were afraid they would starve to death. They traveled many miles to ask the King of gypt for food for their father and family. They did not know that Joseph was a ruler in gypt. When Joseph saw his brothers, he was so happy that he cried! Not only did he give them food, but he invited them to come and live with him in gypt. At first his brothers were afraid of Joseph because they had treated him so badly when he was young. ut Joseph forgave them and told them that it was God who let it happen so that they could be saved! Joseph trusted and honored God. He devoted his life to doing what pleased God. God used him to save his family. Now you are going to make an gyptian-style necklace to remind you that Joseph was in gypt when he saved his family. 2. Show the children the ife Saver necklace that you made. Distribute the paper beads that the children prepared, the medallions that you prepared, the yarn, macaroni and crayons. 3. Tell the children to write their names on the backs of their medallions. Then have them place the yarn through the hole, as shown in Figure A. 4. Tell the children to thread their paper beads and macaroni on both sides of the medallion. They may thread them however they like, using any pattern or order they choose, as shown in Figure. 5. When they have finished threading their necklace, help them to tie the yarn at the end. Conclusion ncourage the children for their creative efforts. Have the children wear their necklaces and read together the words on their medallions. Close with a prayer that the children will be as forgiving to their brothers and sisters as Joseph was to his brothers. Teacher Tips Consider preparing a few different samples to show the children a variety patterns that they can make with the beads and macaroni. For easier threading, tape the ends of the yarn for the children. Fall 1 199 by Discipleship Publications nternational 3-3-5

supplement G A M Joseph May? The children will identify things that they think Joseph would do and think of ways that they can be like him by playing this game. Materials For the teacher: Joseph costume: robe, crown and scepter Preparations 1. Prepare a costume that you will wear during this game. 2. Practice playing this game at home. nstructions 1. Come to class in costume. xplain that today s game is a fun review of this week s ible Story. emind them of the story, saying: We learned that after Joseph was released from prison, he became a very powerful ruler in gypt. He was so successful that the King made him the top ruler in the country. We also learned that Joseph s brothers were starving from the famine. They came to gypt to look for food. When Joseph saw his brothers, he was so happy that he cried. He not only gave them food, but invited all of his brothers and his father to come and live in gypt and they did! Joseph forgave his brothers for everything they did to him. That was a good thing because his brothers were afraid that he would still be angry after all these years. Joseph told them not to be afraid. He told them God used what they did so that he could save them. And that is what he did. 2. This game is played in a similar way as Mother May? Have the children form a line side-by-side. Tell them that you are going to be Joseph in this game. You will stand at one end of the game area, and the children at the other. The children will take turns asking, Joseph, may take some food? You will ask each one a question. f they answer correctly, then all the children may advance by taking one big step. f the child does not answer correctly, then everyone must go backward one small step. 3. Play continues until the children have reached the front or until all the questions have been asked. Play as many times as time permits. Conclusion ncourage the children to try and play a game like this with their families over the holidays. nstead of asking questions about Joseph, they can ask people to say something they are thankful for.
