APOCALYPSE SOON The Coming Armageddon (Revelation 16:1-21) The 7 vial or bowl judgments are about to be unleashed and the return of Christ is now imminent. The world has experienced the 7 seal judgments and the 7 trumpet judgments and now it will experience the last 7 judgments. God s future judgment on this world does not come in one single cataclysmic event but in staged sequential events. The first 4 vial judgments relate to the natural world, the next 2 the political world, and the final vial judgment consummates God s total destruction of this fallen planet. And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth. (v1) The signal for the end to begin comes from a great voice out of the temple. This is likely the voice of God since there is no one else in the temple in heaven (Rev. 15:8). This voice orders the 7 angels to release the 7 final judgments, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth. The cup of iniquity is now full and God s wrath must be poured out. It is done in a sober and orderly manner. John MacArthur notes some general observations, Some writers have seen these bowl judgments as recapitulating the seal and trumpet judgments. There are similarities, but many more differences, especially in the degree of devastation. The fourth bowl has no parallel in earlier judgments, no personal suffering accompanies the first four trumpets, but the bowls bring torment from the start. The bowls are universal, more intense than the previous judgments, and are called the last judgments (15:1), showing they do not go back in time to repeat earlier plagues. And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image. (v2) The first angel unleashed the first judgment. Immediately judgment was witnessed, and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his www.oldfaith.wordpress.com 1

image. This judgment seems to unleash a plague that attacks the physical bodies of those who follow the Antichrist. This disfigurement may well relate to the mark of the beast. It leaves a very painful and festering sore on them. This leaves a very physical distinction between the followers of Christ, like the 144,000, and the followers of the Antichrist. This may well be the judgment described in Zechariah on those that come against Jerusalem prior to the immediate return of Christ, And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth. (Zechariah 14:12) And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea. (v3) The second angel immediately follows in a sequential manner in unleashing the next judgment. This vial was poured on directly upon the sea. This is where the judgment was then concentrated, and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea. The picture of the sea turning into blood is reminiscent of the judgment on the Nile that God brought on the Egyptians in Exodus 7:17-19. This judgment also seems to parallel the third trumpet judgment, And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood; And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed. (Rev. 8:8-9) However, in this second vial judgment the effects are far more comprehensive. Instead of a third part of the sea becoming blood and a third part of the creatures dying, all the waters of the oceans and seas turn to blood and all the creatures in the sea will die. It is a kind of mini-noahic www.oldfaith.wordpress.com 2

Flood! We can only but imagine the sight and smell of the putrefaction of the dead animals. As approximately 71% of the earth s surface is water-covered, this will be a vivid reminder of God s judgment to all. It will devastate the trade and economies of the world. And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood. And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus. For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy. And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments. (v4-7) It is as if God is tightening the screws on the earth in His judgment. The 7 seals and 7 trumpet judgments were bad enough but the 7 vial judgments are much worse. Each of the 7 vial judgments intensifies the pain. The more the Antichrist and his followers resist the will of God, the more the Lord intensifies His judgments upon them. The third vial judgment has the effect of turning, the rivers and fountains of waters into blood. The rivers, fountains, and springs of water have now become like the toxic oceans and seas. The last freshwater supply has now been polluted and poisoned. Everything that was once blue has turned to red. We can imagine the panic on the earth at such a catastrophe. All hope will be gone as the food supplies are devastated and the drinking sources are almost extinguished. In mercy the Lord sends an angel to explain that this judgment is not some climate change effect by naturalistic causes but the finger of God in punishment on the earth. They may be judgments by nature but they have a supernatural origin. The angel will boldly explain, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus. For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy. Having ruthlessly spilt the blood of the righteous in the Tribulation Period, they are experiencing this judgment as part of God s vengeance upon them. A voice from the altar in heaven affirms the integrity and justice of God in this judgment, And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments. The unbelieving world is reaping what they have sowed. And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory. (v8-9) The fourth vial judgment is different in that it is not poured out upon the earth but upon the sun. This results in a devastating searing heat on the wicked, And men were scorched with great heat. Malachi foretold of such a judgment before the First Coming of Christ, For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. (Malachi 4:1; cf. Joel 2:3) The scorching heat combined with the acute fresh water shortage we might expect would lead sinners to repentance. Instead of the heat melting the hearts of sinners it only hardens them in their resistance to God s will, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory. William Newell said, If men are not won by Grace, they will never be won. www.oldfaith.wordpress.com 3

For 15 January 2017 And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain, And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds. (v10-11) The Antichrist s Empire is crumbling. The tide is now turning. Just like Daniel s prophecy foretold in Daniel chapter two, it will have feet of iron mixed with clay indicating that it has strength but also it is unstable. This Empire will rise faster than any other in history but it will collapse faster also. God now strikes in the fifth vial judgment directly at the Antichrist s centre of power. Despite the obvious judgment of God these sinners refused to repent. The hardness of man s heart is amazing! The next vial judgment replicates the judgment upon the Egyptians in a thick darkness will cover the Antichrist s Empire, And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness. Previously they had been scorched with heat and now they are effectively blinded without the light. Joel previously prophesised of this darkness, Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand; A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations. (Joel 2:1-2) www.oldfaith.wordpress.com 4

The Lord did not give any warning of this darkness. It will be a foretaste of the outer darkness of hell. We can only but imagine the panic and fear in the hearts of the Egyptians as they experienced this judgment. This would have been heightened by the fact it came without warning so they had no opportunity to prepare for it physically or psychologically. It must have seemed like blindness or even death. This judgment should have been a providential warning to the ungodly of the darkness of hell that they would soon encounter if they did not repent of their sins. Instead of repentance we read, and they gnawed their tongues for pain, And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds. And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared. (v12) The sixth angel pours out his vial at a specific location, upon the great river Euphrates. This resulted in, the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared. The Euphrates was the river that the city of Babylon was founded beside. This ancient river flowed from the Garden of Eden (Gen. 2:10-14) and formed the Eastern boundary of the land promised to Israel (Gen. 15:18). God supernaturally dries up the waters of the Euphrates. This great river is around 1800 miles long and around 1000 feet wide. Its drying up completely will be a powerful sign. This will prepare the way for the Kings of the East to access the road to Armageddon, which is in Israel. John MacArthur notes, God s drying up of the Euphrates is not an act of kindness toward the kings from the east, but one of judgment. They and their armies will be entering a deadly trap. The evaporation of the Euphrates will lead them to their doom, just as the parting of the Red Sea led to the destruction of the Egyptian army. Why they will make the daunting journey that will take them to their doom, through the drought, scorching heat, darkness, and their painful sores, is stated in vv. 13 14. Many sceptics have argued that the imagery of Zechariah 12-14 and Revelation 19 of the Battle of Armageddon being fought without conventional weapons of war but with armies on horseback as being implausible and even impossible. But now with the economies of the world www.oldfaith.wordpress.com 5

being destroyed and the oceans and seas being poisoned, it is plausible for the Antichrist to be forced to revert to such primitive means of transportation to attack the Jews in Israel. And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame. And He gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon. (v13-16) This final battle of battles for the Antichrist together with the devil and the False Prophet seems to empower the forces of hell. Powerful demons emerge in the forms of frogs to catalyse the forces of the Antichrist. They have powers to work signs and wonder to persuade the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. These delusions will be the means of leading the ungodly into the final trap for their destruction at Armageddon. It may appear that the devil and the Antichrist are in control but the passage emphasizes that God is the One leading them into this fatal trap, And He gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon. God brings these evil forces to this point in order to judge them. Armageddon or Har-Magedon is a Hebrew word meaning Mount Megiddo. MacArthur notes, Since there is no specific mountain by that name, and Har can refer to hill country, it is probably a reference to the hill country surrounding the Plain of Megiddo, some sixty miles north of Jerusalem. It is easy for John and his readers to be intimidated by such a sight. But God speaks at this point in the vision to reassure that Christ is on His way to destroy them all. One with God is always a majority. It always has and it always will, If God be for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31) The saints should be prudent and vigilant to stand for the Lord in that day, Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame. There is a clock in a church in Strasburg, Germany, which has these words around the dial, One of these hours the Lord is coming. The sixth vial judgment is the penultimate one before the final destruction. www.oldfaith.wordpress.com 6

And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done. And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great. (v17-21) The seventh and final vial judgment becomes complete devastation and destruction to the kingdom of Antichrist. A great voice speaks from heaven announcing that It is done. After this the Lord Jesus Christ will set up His millennial kingdom and rule over the whole earth from Jerusalem. The seventh vial judgment begins with tremendous atmospheric signs, And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. The city of Jerusalem will be split into 3 parts by this unprecedented earthquake, And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. We get a parallel insight to this division in Zechariah, where we discover the Mount of Olives will be split in two when the feet of Christ touch it. MacArthur explains, Zechariah 14:4 10 describes these changes in detail. The Mount of Olives will split in two, and a new valley running east and west will be created (Zech. 14:4). A spring of water will flow year-round from Jerusalem to the Mediterranean and Dead Seas (Zech. 14:8), causing the desert to blossom like a rose (cf. Isa. 35:1). Jerusalem will be elevated, and the surrounding region flattened into a plain (Zech. 14:10). Thus, the purpose of the earthquake as it relates to Jerusalem is not to judge the city, but to enhance it. Jerusalem was judged earlier in the Tribulation by an earthquake, which led to the salvation of those who were not killed (11:13). Thus, there is no need for further judgment on that city. The physical changes will prepare Jerusalem for the central role it will play during the www.oldfaith.wordpress.com 7

millennial kingdom, when Christ will reign there as King (Ps. 110:2; Isa. 2:3; 24:23; Mic. 4:7). The topography of the whole earth will be transformed at this point in history, And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. It may well be that the earth will revert in the Millennium to the pre-flood condition when the curse is partially lifted from the planet. In the midst of the physical changes to the topography of the earth, God rains a physical judgment upon the implacable sinners, And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent. These giant hailstones are around 100 pounds in weight. Despite this terrible judgment the hardened hearts of mankind refuse to repent, and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great. This judgment will also destroy the great cities of fallen mankind, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. The destruction of the centre of the rule of Antichrist in Babylon is described in more detail in Revelation 17 and 18. It is not hard to see a parallel with the rise and actions of Pharaoh and the rise and actions of the Antichrist. Both proudly spoke words of blasphemy against the Lord and both sought to destroy the Jewish people. Both led armies against the Jews and both were slowly judged by God by means of plagues and He then finally destroyed both of them with their armies. The Antichrist and his followers refused to submit to God s will and learned the hard way, It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God (Heb. 10:31). This is a lesson we all will learn. www.oldfaith.wordpress.com 8
