Page 2 Jubilee Year of Mercy - Merciful Like the Father September 4, 2016 FR. GÉRARD S CORNER PRAYER FOR PRIESTS Happy Labor Day Weekend! Most of us are still clinging to summer s delights evenings on the deck, outdoor grilling, maybe a swim. This weekend in Rome, the Church celebrates a Jubilee for Workers and Volunteers of Mercy, reminding us of Wisdom s advice. Whatever our timid deliberations or unsure plans, nothing should keep us from voluntarily and generously giving ourselves in loving service to all in need. But doesn t taking Jesus words in today s Gospel literally make us timid and unsure? Jesus declares that if we don t hate everyone near and dear, including our own lives, if we don t carry our own cross, if we don t renounce everything we possess, we cannot be his disciples. But didn t Jesus also command us, Love one another as I have loved you. Well done, good and faithful servant. I was hungry and you gave me food, a stranger and you welcomed me. Pope Francis interprets Jesus dramatic words today as challenging us to imitate Jesus selfsacrificing love. Imagine what imitating Jesus self-sacrificing love cost Paul s wealthy convert Philemon. Sounding as challenging as Jesus himself, the imprisoned Paul informs Philemon that Paul has become spiritual father to Philemon s runaway slave, Onesimus, whom Paul honors as his child. Then, not simply asking Philemon to forgive Onesimus, Paul challenges Philemon to welcome that illegal runaway back no longer as a slave but... brother, beloved especially to me, but even more so to you, as a man an equal, honorable human being and in the Lord (v. 16). Wisdom would call Paul s advice what the Lord intends. Jesus would warn, otherwise you cannot be my disciple! Please pray for the following priests this week: Sept 4 Rev. DID YOU KNOW? Teach kids how to identify bullying... Bullying is an unfortunate problem in schools across the country, and no matter how nice or friendly your children are, they are going to run across bullies. Whether your children are victimized by a bully or not, they should be aware of the classic signs of bullying teasing, pushing, shoving, violence or threats of any kind, and more. While bullying does not always escalate to physical touching or violence, your children should be able to identify touches that they are uncomfortable with, and should know where to go to report issues.
