Service Notes: Today we celebrate the Festival of the Reformation of the Church. What does that mean? It means that today we remember why we re called Lutherans. The effect of the Lutheran Reformation of the Church on the history of the world can hardly be overstated. Quite simply, it caused one of the most profound sea-changes in history. In fact, when US News and World Report ranked the most important events of the last 1000 years, the Lutheran Reformation placed second, right behind Gutenberg s moveable type printing press. Now consider that for a minute That means that they considered the Lutheran Reformation to be of greater significance than the discovery of the New World (number 3 on the list). But why? And who was this Luther guy? He was a monk, a priest, a professor at a little university in Wittenberg, Germany. Why would a guy like that be listed at the third most influential person of the last 1000 years (1000 Years and 1000 People, Gottlieb and Bowers)? More important than Einstein, Edison, George Washington? Why? All for the reason that we call ourselves Lutherans and celebrate this Festival of the Lutheran Reformation. During the dark days of the Middle Ages, the truth of God s Word was hidden away in monasteries. The church of that day was not teaching that we are saved by Jesus death and resurrection. Instead, people were told that they needed to try and earn their way to heaven or worse, that they had to buy their way to heaven. The truth of God s word was rejected, and the traditions of men put in its place. Dr. Luther changed all that on October 31, 1517, when he nailed 95 Statements for Debate on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg. He said that the Bible should be our only source of teaching, not manmade traditions. He showed that God saved us by grace alone, by faith alone. He returned the Bible into the hands of the people, and quite literally changed the world. Today, we are not here to celebrate a man. We re here to celebrate the grace of God who reformed his Church, and brought back the pure and simple teaching that had been lost: Jesus Christ died and rose for me, so I will be in heaven forever. Period. By Grace Alone. By Faith Alone. By Scripture Alone. 1

DIVINE SERVICE I Ringing of the Bell Please Stand and face the cross at the back of the chapel L(eader): C(ongregation): In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Sing: All hail the pow r of Jesus name! Let angels prostrate fall; Bring forth the royal diadem and crown him Lord of all. Bring forth the royal diadem and crown him Lord of all. Hail him, ye heirs of David s line, whom David Lord did call, The God incarnate, Man divine, and crown him Lord of all. The God incarnate, Man divine, and crown him Lord of all. L: Blessing and honor and glory and power be unto the One who sits on the throne, C: And to the Lamb, forever and ever. L: His blood sets us free to be the people of God. Sing: Sinners whose love can ne er forget the wormwood and the gall, Go, spread your trophies at his feet and crown him Lord of all. Go, spread your trophies at his feet and crown him Lord of all. L: Let us confess our sins to the Lord. C: Almighty God, merciful Father, I, a troubled and repentant sinner, confess that I have sinned against you in my thoughts, my words, and my actions. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved others as I should. I am distressed by the sins that trouble me and am deeply sorry for them. 3

L: Jesus death paid for the guilt of your sins and the sins of the whole world. He said to his people, If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven. Because of the promise of our Savior Jesus, I forgive you all your sins. Be assured that you are a dear child of God and an heir of eternal life! Sing: Let ev ry kindred, ev ry tribe on this terrestrial ball To him all majesty ascribe and crown him Lord of all. To him all majesty ascribe and crown him Lord of all. L: Fight the good fight of faith! C: For the Lord, the righteous Judge, has laid up for us a crown of life, L: For us, and for all who await his appearing. Sing: Oh, that with yonder sacred throng we at his feet may fall! We ll join the everlasting song and crown him Lord of all. We ll join the everlasting song and crown him Lord of all. PRAYER OF THE DAY L: Let us pray. The leader says the Prayer of the Day. C: Amen. THE WORD OF GOD THE CHILDREN S SERMON THE FIRST LESSON: DANIEL 3:16-28 16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up." 4

19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual 20 and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and throw them into the blazing furnace. 21 So these men, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes, were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace. 22 The king's command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, 23 and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace. 24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, "Weren't there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?" They replied, "Certainly, O king." 25 He said, "Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods." 26 Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, "Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here!" So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, 27 and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers crowded around them. They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them. 28 Then Nebuchadnezzar said, "Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel and rescued his servants! They trusted in him and defied the king's command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God. 5

THE PSALM OF THE DAY: PSALM 46 (The Choir will sing the first antiphon and the congregation is invited to sing the antiphon thereafter. Choir will sing the verses.) We will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the sea, Though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. Antiphon Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; He lifts His voice, the earth melts. The Lord Almighty is with us The God of Jacob is our fortress. Antiphon He makes wars cease He breaks the bow and burns the shields with fire. Be still, be still, be still, and know that I am God. The Lord Almighty is with us, The God of Jacob is our fortress. Antiphon 6

THE SECOND LESSON: ROMANS 1:16-17 16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith." THE VERSE OF THE DAY: Sung by the Cantor Alleluia. If you hold to my teachings you are truly my disciples, then you will know the truth and the truth will make you free. Alleluia. (John 8:31,32) THE GOSPEL LESSON: MARK 13:5-11 After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings: 5 Jesus said to them: "Watch out that no one deceives you. 6 Many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and will deceive many. 7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 8 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains. 9 "You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. 7

On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. 10 And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. 11 Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. After the Gospel, the congregation sings: THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. 8

THE HYMN OF THE DAY: A Mighty Fortress is Our God by Dr. Martin Luther 1. A mighty fortress is our God, A trusty shield and weapon; He helps us free from every need That hath us now o ertaken. The old evil foe, now means deadly woe; Deep guile and great might Are his dread arms in fight; On earth is not his equal. This battle hymn of the Reformation is still a favorite of Lutherans. Based on Psalm 46, it is as rousing today as it was when Luther urged his close friend Philip Melanchthon to sing it with him during times of sorrow and distress. 2. With might of ours can naught be done; Soon were our loss effected. But for us fights the valiant One Whom God himself elected. As Ye, Who is this? Jesus Christ it is, the Almighty Lord, And there s no other God; He holds the field forever. 3. Though devils all the world should fill, All eager to devour us. We tremble not, we fear no ill; They shall not overpow r us. This world s prince may still, scowl fierce as he will, He can harm us none, he s judged, the deed is done! One little word can fell him. 4. The Word they still shall let remain, Nor any thanks have for it. He s by our side upon the plain with His good gifts and Spirit. And take they our life, goods, fame, child, and wife, Let these all be gone, they yet have nothing won; The Kingdom ours remaineth! 9

THE SERMON: After the sermon, the congregation sings: THANKSGIVING THE OFFERING: The members of Faith Lutheran Congregation have joined together to do the Lord's work in this community and around the world. Visitors need not feel obligated to participate in this offering which supports our ministry. 10

THE PRAYER OF THE CHURCH: Throughout the prayer, when the Leader says, Lord, in your mercy the congregation responds by saying, Hear our prayer! THE LORD S PRAYER: 1 C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. 1 For 500 years, it has been the widespread custom of the Lutheran Church to ring the church bell three times during the Lord s Prayer. Rung at the beginning, middle and end of the prayer, it allowed even the sick and absent across the countryside to join the Church in praying the Our Father. 11

THE SACRAMENT Faith Lutheran Church practices close communion. We ask that only members partake of the Sacrament. L: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. L: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up to the Lord. L: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is good and right so to do. L: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who preserves his Church to the end of time when he will come again as king to judge all people and take his own to glory. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song: 12

THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION: L: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat. This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. C: Amen. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. The peace of the Lord be with you always. 13

THE DISTRIBUTION: THE SONG OF DEPARTURE: Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word 2 By Dr. Martin Luther 1. Lord, keep us steadfast in your Word; Curb those who by deceit or sword, Would wrest the Kingdom from your Son, and set at naught all he has done. 2. Lord Jesus Christ, your pow r make known, For you are Lord of lords alone; Defend your Christendom that we May sing your praise eternally. 3. O Comforter of priceless worth, Send peace and unity on earth. Support us in our final strife, And lead us out of death to life. 2 This hymn was written by Dr. Martin Luther in 1541 because of a grave and growing threat. Militant Islam was on the move. Seeking to conquer the West and force conversion, the armies of Islam conquered much of the Mediterranean world. They conquered right up to Vienna, the gateway to Europe. A service of prayer for the safety of Christendom was held in 1541, and Luther wrote this hymn for the boys choir. It is prayer that God preserve his people regardless of the evil aims of this world.
