SAINT PAUL S EPISTLE MAY 2017 NEWSLETTER OF SAINT PAUL S EPISCOPAL CHURCH OREGON CITY MESSAGE FROM THE RECTOR Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We move in our liturgical cycle from the season of Easter to the lengthy season of Pentecost. Pentecost was originally an Old Testament agricultural festival celebrating and giving thanks for the fruits of the early spring harvest. Over time the celebration changed from a focus on agriculture to a focus on God s creation of humanity. In the Christian calendar Pentecost falls on the seventh Sunday after Easter. It is referenced in the second book of Acts in the familiar scene of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on those gathered in the upper room following Jesus resurrection and ascension. Pentecost is a time of renewal and rejoicing. It is a time when we celebrate hope in Christ Jesus. It is a time when we witness the breath of God blowing upon and through the faithful, moving us to action in the name of Christ. Pentecost is a reminder of God s presence at work among us; empowering us to be witnesses to God s love. It is a time of newness and renewal of mission. Sometimes experiencing newness or renewal can be disconcerting yet in the midst of the new, the Spirit moves when we allow it. During the upcoming Pentecost season, starting in June, at the 10 am service, we will be engaging an alternate form of Eucharistic liturgy. In the early summer we will celebrate using the Celtic liturgy from the Iona Community. In late summer, fall and up to Advent we ll use the Eucharistic liturgy from the New Zealand Prayer Book. I invite you to reflect upon your own experiences of these of the liturgies, perhaps asking the following questions: What about the language of the liturgy is comforting, challenging, confusing? Why do I like the language of the particular service I attend? What do I think about symbolic, metaphorical language in the liturgy is it important, cumbersome, enlightening? When was the last time I encountered something new in the liturgy? Did I welcome it or resist it? When have I felt empowered by the Holy Spirit through the liturgy? I welcome your thoughts, comments and experience following our Pentecost liturgies; realizing that a single experience of anything limits the possibility of a full evaluation. May the Spirit of God enliven your heart, strengthen your faith and encourage you in the work that God has set before you. Canon Linda Send forth your Spirit, O Lord and renew the face of the earth. Ps. 104:31
HABITAT SIGN A STUD A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to the Habitat For Humanity Sign-A-Stud event. We raised 333 from the Saint Paul s family, and the stud will be built into the next house we construct. You are all helping us meet the goal of a decent safe place for every family to live. Thank you again. Thanks! Tom PASTOR EASTER EGG HUNT A huge Thank You to everyone who donated candy and filled eggs for our children s egg hunt on Easter Sunday. It was great fun for all who participated in hiding, hunting, and eating those eggs! The weather was fine and all went home with full bags and baskets of candy. It is your participation that makes these events possible and the kids and teachers really do appreciate your efforts! Thank You again. 1 - Trent L Manian 2 - Janet Tripp 3 - Darin Shoup 3 - William Kennedy 12 - Robert Licking 13 - Jackson Flowers 18 - Mickey Finch 29 - Jack dewaalmiller MAY BIRTHDAYS PENNIES PROJECT We need your pennies! BACPACK BUDDIES UPDATE Just a quick update to let you know that we are delivering 53 bags per week to Holcomb School. We are also putting out a plea for 15 oz. jars of peanut butter. If you happen to see a good sale, please let us know or put in an extra one in your grocery cart. Of course, all donations are welcomed. GREETINGS FROM ST PAUL S PLACE Greetings from St. Paul s Place! We had to miss two dinners in January because of the weather but we are back on track now. In February we served 81 meals of pasta and meatballs, 125 meals of shepherd s pie and 101 meals of meatloaf. Thank you to all who help with St. Paul s Place: Greeters, Servers, Cooks, Kitchen crew, Wellness Clinic and Healing Touch, and to those who donate and make the program possible. If anyone would like to help in any way, please contact Penny at 502-632-8910 or speak with any St. Paul s Place volunteer. Best wishes to all! BACKPACK BUDDIES UPDATE I would like to start by saying THANK YOU to all of you who have donated food and money this past month. Your thoughtfulness is truly humbling and very much appreciated. We have been delivering 59 bags each week and have just received a request for two more. I would again like to ask for 15 oz. plastic jars of peanut butter to be included in their last bag of the year. We have approximately 20 but still need about 41 more. We usually pack one applesauce and one pudding snack but would like to substitute fruit cups for the pudding. If you happen to see a good deal on any of the above, please let us know. One more request plastic grocery bags. We use approximately 488 plastic grocery bags every 4 weeks. (244 doubled) Our last week of packing will be May 21. Thank you for helping to feed children each weekend that may otherwise go hungry. Nancyd663@gmail.com or (503-781-1080) page 3 May 2017
