I Am The Bread of Life AUGUST 19, 2018-20th Sunday of Ordinary Time First Reading: Proverbs 9:1-6 A rich woman invites many guests to her home to eat and drink. She appeals to those who lack understanding to forsake foolishness and advance in the way of understanding. Second Reading: Ephesians 5:15-20 Paul advises the Ephesians to abandon foolish ways and evil deeds. All Christians should concentrate on doing God s will before all other things. He reminds them to always give thanks to God in the name of Jesus Christ. Gospel: John 6:51-58 Jesus had just told the crowd that anyone who ate of the bread he planned to give would live forever, and that this bread was his flesh, which he would give up for the sake of the world. The people do not understand, but Jesus reassures them that his flesh is real food and that those who feed on this bread shall live forever. A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 19, 2018 Brothers and sisters. Watch carefully then how you live, not as foolish persons but as wise, making the most of the opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore, do not continue in ignorance, but try to understand what is the will of the Lord but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and playing to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks always The apostle Paul knew his people well. With encouraging words he taught them, corrected them, and warned them. Do I realize that they are also directed to me today? We are careful about many, many things each day. We fastened our seat belts, placed the infants in their car seats, make sure the smoke alarms are functioning and lock the door securely. We should also show the same care for our spiritual lives. We would promise in the prayer of contrition to avoid the near occasion of sin. In our day and age, as well as that of the Ephesians, it is not easy. We are bombarded from every side, challenged, tempted, yes assaulted by the evil one. Only through a strong, vibrant prayer life can we both resist evil and not fall at times of temptation. For the gift of grace, we are able to express our thanks.

Msgr. Gorman s will celebrate his last Sunday Mass at St. Matthew s on August 26. We will have a reception for him following the 8:30 am mass. The reception will be an opportunity to thank him and say goodbyes. Since the Archdiocese has asked us to reduce the number of Sunday Masses this is opportune time to adjust our mass schedule. For two years now over the Summer we have combined the 8:00 am & the 9:00 am into the 8:30 am Mass. As we will now have one less priest we will extend the summer schedule throughout the year. St. Matthew Sunday Mass Schedule: Saturday Vigil: 5:00 pm, Sunday: 8:30 am & 12 noon Our Lady of Perpetual Help Sunday Mass Schedule (NO CHANGE) Saturday Vigil: 5:00 pm, Sunday: 8:30 am & 10:30 am Dear friends in the Lord: August 13, 2018 As we enjoy these last few weeks of summer, we pause, this Wednesday, to celebrate the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We remember the moment that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was taken up to heaven, body and soul, to be with her Son. We also hope to be with Jesus, body and soul, for all eternity in heaven, which is why we so often turn to Mary to ask Jesus for His grace and love. With trust in her care we offer our heavenly mother our prayers and devotion. Allow me to invite you to join us for a special day of prayer and devotion to Mary and her Son, Jesus. On Saturday, October 6, there will once again be an archdiocesan pilgrimage to Washington, D.C., to visit the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. If you have never been on a pilgrimage before, please consider joining us for a day of prayer, reflection, and trust in her care as we visit the basilica affectionately known as Mary s Shrine. Buses will depart from across the archdiocese and there will be time to tour the basilica, pray the rosary together, and celebrate Holy Mass before returning home. For more information and to register, please visit adnypilgrimage.eventbrite.com. You might even consider bringing a friend or family member with you for what is sure to be a wonderful day! As Catholics, we honor Mary for her role in our salvation. Her yes to God and her loving attention to Jesus are the reasons she is special to us. Please do not hesitate to turn to Mary in times of need! To grow in devotion as the feast of the Assumption approaches and we prepare as an archdiocesan family for the October pilgrimage, consider praying the rosary. Or, check out some of the wonderful content about Mary on FORMED. There are movies, Bible studies, talks and more that will deepen your understanding and devotion to the mother of our Savior. Again, if you are interested in joining me on October 6, please visit adnypilgrimage.eventbrite.com or email pilgrimage@archny.org. May we all rest in her care and trust in the loving mercy of her Son, Jesus. With prayerful best wishes, I am, Faithfully in Christ, Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan/Archbishop of New York
