GOAL: Worship & welcome is all about engaging kids and helping them enter into worship, letting them know that class has begun preparing their minds for what they are going to hear. GOAL: Establishes community and engages kids, drawing them in and preparing them to hear God s word. Kids get to participate in various worship elements such as offering, scripture memorization and their curiosity is peaked as they discover what will be in the wardrobe of wonder. Volunteer picks two hats from wardrobe one for himself, one for host. Tell other kids to put on their imaginary thinking caps. Volunteer peeks in the What s It box. Host gives 3 clues, kids get to vote on what they think it is. WARDROBE OF WONDER What sit: 9:00 Hammer 10:15 Drill Then as host you say. If you think our clue is a, raise your hand. Yes! A hammer is used to build something. What other items could you use to build something? Wait for children to respond. All those items are pretty noisy, aren t they? We re going to hear about a man who built something really big. But this man didn t allow any tools inside this building while it was being built. Would you like to hear why? Point out that what kids are about to hear is true and is recorded in the Bible. Open your Bible to the passage and leave it open and visible throughout The Big God Story. Invite kids to open their Bibles and follow along as you storytell. Children respond to what the Holy Spirit is teaching them as they reflect on the day s portion of The Big God Story. The Prayer of Release allows children and leaders to pause, be still, and ask God to quiet their hearts and minds. Before you pray, you might ask the kids to hold out their hands, palms up, in a spirit of releasing their worries and distractions in order to better receive what the Holy Spirit might have for them today. Then encourage the kids to quiet their voices, take a seat, and pray with you. Hello, everyone, it s so good to see you today. Wow! This is really loud try to talk to your friends (model talking loudly to children). Can you hear them? No! Motion to Tech to stop noise. Tech: Stop sound effects. Whew! That s better let s sit quietly for a minute. Can you talk to your friends? Can you hear your friends whisper? Whisper to children. It was hard to think about anything but the noises we were hearing. There are so many exciting things we get to discover today in The Big God Story. Before we get started, will you close your eyes and pray with me? Let s invite God to teach us. Lead children in a Prayer of Release to pause, be still, and ask the Holy Spirit to quiet their hearts and minds. Last week we heard about David and how God is worthy of worship. Today, we are going to hear about one of King David s Son, Well, here let s watch the T.V. s to learn more about our Big God Story Tech: Cue Storytelling Video 3

God provided for the people building His temple so they could worship Him and remember Him together, and He provides for us too. God has given us so much. We can worship Him and remember Him together too! What are some things you re thankful for? Interact with responses. Your homes, your families, our church! Wow! God has given us all so much. We don t have to go to a temple to worship God; we can worship Him anytime and anywhere. God is always with us. We can worship Him with our whole lives. God is worthy of worship! 4

GOAL: Kids respond in small groups to what they heard in the Big God Story. Build Your Own Temple SUPPLIES Enough building block for all the kids to play. ENGAGE: Welcome children to the table. We have a lot of blocks here. What do you think they re for? Children answer. I have an idea for you. Can you use the materials on the table to build a place to worship God? Just like Solomon Built a temple so God could have a permanent place to live. Where do we worship together as a faith community? As children build, ask about what they re building and what things they d want inside the place built for worshipping God. I wonder..why did the Solomon and the people want to build a temple? I wonder...i wonder why they would not use noisy tools to build the temple. I wonder...have you ever had a big job to do? Did you wish you could have help? I wonder...did Solomon have help to build the temple? 5

GOAL: Kids respond in small groups to what they heard in the Big God Story. Decorating the Temple SUPPLIES: Coloring sheet (one per child) Crayons Jewels Stickers Stone paper Glue sticks ENGAGE: Today you learned about the beautiful temple that Solomon built with lots of people helping him. Now you can decorate the temple the way you want if you were building the temple. Remember there was stone and gold, and jewels. As kids work on their coloring sheet, ask the wonder Questions below. In The Big God Story, we heard how Solomon gathered the people together to build a temple for the Lord. They knew God is worthy of worship, and they wanted to show Him how they felt in a special way. I wonder Which of my special things would I give to build God s temple? I wonder What are some ways I can worship God? I wonder What does God feel when I worship Him? I wonder How do I know God is worthy? 6

Review the Remember Verse: Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground. Psalm 143:10 Invite children to place their hands out in front of themselves, palms up. This posture demonstrates a willingness to receive what God has for them. Read the following verse over children, pausing at the word praise and inviting them to dance for a moment in praise to God. Psalm 145:3 says, Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom. Close with these words of blessing: Children, may you know God created you and will always be with you. He is worthy of worship! 7

I ll never forget the first time I heard the complete account of The Big God Story. I was overwhelmed with emotion. The more I read and studied Scripture, the more my fascination grew. This one story was written over a period of about 1,500 years, by some 40 different authors, on three different continents, yet without any contradictions. It is one story. The Old Testament is full of prophecies about the coming of Messiah, and Jesus fulfilled them all. There are more prophecies about His return, and He will fulfill all of them as well. However, I realized that the Bible isn t God s only masterpiece. There is the perfection of our very own bodies and the way the earth is created to essentially sustain itself. I was humbly aware that these are mere glimpses of the enormity of our God. Pondering these things led me to realize that the very same God who designed everything loves me! He loved me enough to humble Himself to confine Himself to a physical body! He loved each of us enough to sacrifice all His divine prerogatives for a time all so we may know Him. I stand in awe of God. From the very deepest part of myself comes a desire to respond with all of my life to give Jesus my heart for He is so worthy of my worship. Erika Abdelatif ROCKHARBOR Church The worthiness of God and people s desire to worship Him were without dispute. After the Israelites conquered the Promised Land and the tribes settled, it became important to centralize a place of worship for God. The temple would function as a religious focal point for worship and sacrifice. Being a man of war, David was not allowed to build the temple, but he did gather materials for it and organized the project (1 Chronicles 22). Only the finest materials were used. Every stone was shaped and finished at the quarry, so that no hammer or chisel or any iron tool was heard within the temple (1 Kings 6:7). Like his father, Solomon desired to build a temple to honor God for His provision, protection, and guidance for the people of Israel over the years. David understood the enormity of the project. My son Solomon is young and inexperienced. The task is great, because this palatial structure is not for man but for the LORD God (1 Chronicles 29:1). The Lord set Solomon up to succeed as long as Solomon remained unswerving in carrying out my commands and laws (1 Chronicles 28:7). After seven years, the temple was complete (1 Kings 6:37 38). David gave Solomon clear and detailed directions that came from the Lord Himself, and he modeled what sacrificial giving was. The entire community was called to come alongside Solomon, giving of their time, talents, and possessions. They gave what was required and then they gave an offering over and above. The abundance from the people seemed as if they could not give enough to the Lord. The people and David, the king, celebrated the wholehearted giving, rejoicing greatly. Everyone knew that God is worthy of our sacrificial worship. 8

After the leaders had given so extravagantly to God, David stopped in front of the entire assembly and prayed, saying: Praise be to you, LORD, the God of our father Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Yours, LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. (1 Chronicles 29:10 11) True worship is about giving your whole heart to God. It s about recognizing that everything we have comes from Him, and everything we are is because of who He is. We worship God as a demonstration of His worthiness. Find a quiet place this week and write the reasons why God is worthy of your worship. Use these words to write a psalm or poem. Be creative and personal. When you re finished, use your psalm as worship for God. 9
