Week of October 14, 2012 Lessons for the Leader Life repeats itself siblings complained about each other in Bible times and they do today as well. How do you respond when your friends squabble with their siblings? Read Luke 10:38-39. One sister was all about the social obligations while the other was about learning from Jesus. In Bible times, women were not normally part of any rabbi's teachings. Jesus welcomed women to His group of learners. Read Luke 10:40. What happened with Mary? Is Martha implying "it's all about me"? Do we not whine and complain today? Do we sometimes tell God what to do or how we would like things to go? Read Luke 10:41-42. Jesus cut to the heart of the matter: stress, worry, and letting insignificant things take the place of more important ones. Many times we overlook the important spiritual moments moments of silence when we should be listening instead of talking; times when God is prodding us to love on friends we would rather not be around, guiding us to make amends, or directing our hearts to say we are sorry and repair broken relationships. Notice Jesus' words in verse 42. Jesus would not tell Mary to stop. Mary was doing what Jesus wants us to do listen and learn. Note that Jesus is our example for how we should treat other people. How do you treat people? Jesus loved all people. Do you love all people? What about the preschoolers? Do you have one who drives you crazy? Spend some extra time loving that child. Set the example in your classroom to love all people. What do these symbols mean? 1a Application Activities Format: Follow the numbers with arrows for a 30-minute, large group plus 20-minute Application Activities format. 1 Follow all the numbers for a 45- to 60-minute large group only format. Say: "These two ladies will pretend to be Mary and Martha and talk about Jesus' visit. Our Bible story is true and in the Bible." Jesus Loved Mary and Martha Based on Luke 10:38-42 Jesus and the disciples were traveling. Jesus went into a village and a woman there invited Him into her home. The woman's name was Martha. Martha had a sister named Mary. Martha began to prepare food and take care of her guests. Mary sat at Jesus' feet and listened to what He said. Martha was busy doing jobs in her home. Martha went to Jesus and asked Him to tell her sister to help her in the house. Jesus told Martha she was too busy with things in the house. He said Mary made the right choice to listen to Him. Jesus let Mary keep listening. 10aReview the Bible Story (5 minutes) Printed Bible verse circles from step 6, marker Number the backs of the circles in correct order. Scatter the circles before the group. Call on a child to answer a review question. Review Questions Who invited Jesus to her home? (Martha) What was Martha doing while Jesus talked? What choice was Jesus talking about? (listening) Instruct the child to choose a circle and place it number side up on the floor after answering. Call on other children to answer the remaining review questions, leading children to arrange the circles number sides up in numerical order. Turn over each circle as you say aloud each word. Martha: Mary, I've been thinking and remembering. Do you remember when Jesus came to visit us? Mary: Yes, I do. He was traveling, and you invited Him here. Martha: I knew He and His friends would be tired and hungry. I thought we could give them a place to rest. Mary: I was so glad you asked Him to come. I really wanted to hear what He was teaching. Martha: I know, but I don't think I knew how much work there was to do. Mary: Yes, you were running around so much I don't think you even heard Him talking! Martha: Well, a lot of work has to be done when I invite people to the house. I really wanted you to help. And you were just sitting there, listening! Mary: I remember. I was enjoying what Jesus was saying so much that pretty soon I didn't even see what you were doing. Martha: I know. I watched you sitting there while I was trying to help them, and I got more and more upset. Finally, I thought maybe Jesus would take care of it, so I asked Him, "Don't You care that Mary isn't helping me? Tell her to help me now." Mary: Yes, I heard that part, all right! I thought He would make me leave Him to help you. I didn't want to leave you alone, but I really wanted to hear Him! Martha: But remember, Mary, what He said? Mary: I remember. He looked at me, and then He looked right at you. He said, "Martha, many things worry you, but only one thing is important." Martha: And then He said, "Mary made the right choice, and it won't be taken away from her." Martha: Mary, I've been thinking and remembering. Do you remember when Jesus came to visit us?
