FEATURED ARTICLE HR FORUM 2016: TOGETHER, WE TRANSCEND Ma an Nasmo or, in English, Together We Transcend, was the theme of Nesma s 2016 HR forum at Nesma Training Center in Jeddah. The forum began with a speech by Nesma s Vice President, Sami Sendi, who explained the need for Nesma companies to transcend their limits as individual companies by sharing knowledge and having a unified corporate culture. This was followed by, One Culture for One Company, a presentation by Adel Yazbek, HR Development Consultant, who highlighted Nesma s aim to keep excellent employees by appreciating their hard work, honoring their achievements and building a single corporate culture. In addition, HR aims to continuously improve policies and ensure that all companies are united in following those same policies and procedures. Mr. Yazbek also outlined the following objectives: Ensure all Nesma companies follow the Labor Law. Ensure all employees are treated fairly. Ensure all managers and employees understand the rules and their responsibilities. Make it easier for employees to transfer among companies thereby improving retention rates. Make employees rights clear. Improve corporate productivity by improving the performance of individual employees. Abdulmohsen Algarni, a trainer from the Ministry of Labor, talked about the labor law and recent changes that have been made to it. After this, two presentations were given about new training programs which are available. One speaker was Ghassan Al Amoudi, an employment researcher at Human Resources Development Fund (HRDF). In addition, Khaled Al-Tawab, from the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation (TVTC), talked about the training programs at the National System For Joint Training which they sponsor along with the HRDF, the Council of Saudi Chambers and the Ministry of Labor. These training programs will help companies to find qualified employees. The potential employee applies for a job and is hired, then they are sent to a training program. During the training period, the company pays them and upon successful completion, the employee begins work. This program is designed to serve the private sector, increase employment of Saudis, and fill gaps in the marketplace with qualified employees. 2

IN THE SPOTLIGHT AL-FARIS GROUP l Faris Food Group is a condiments A manufacturer and distributor of over 300 products operating through two subsidiaries: Al Faris Food Industries, a manufacturer of condiments and sauces and Al Faris Al Arabi Trading, a distribution company supplying a large range of food products to a wide customer base and generating approximately 63% of the Group s revenue. The Group has a solid client base of more than 8,000 wholesale and retail customers. The company plans to expand to 20,000 outlets by 2019. In full compliance with the Saudization program, over 25% of the group s total workforce are Saudi nationals. Al Faris Al Arabi Trading (AFT), established in 1989 in Riyadh, has revenues of over SAR 150M and is a key supplier of a large range of products throughout KSA. The company has 6 branches throughout the Kingdom with 7 warehouses, 70 vehicles, and 133 employees. It s client base includes Panda Supermarkets, Othaim Markets, LuLu Hypermarket, Carrefour and Danube. AFT also distributes its 180 products to wholesale outlets, hotels, restaurants, catering services and even small corner stores. The company is considered a leader in deli products (pickles, olives and cheeses), sauces and condiments. In fact, 39% of its revenue comes from condiments, particularly sales of ketchup. Even though they offer higher quality, the company s products are competitively priced in order to appeal to a large customer base. AFT also owns Zarifa, Morel and Sarina brands and is the sole agent and distributor in KSA for key international brands of Spanish olives and Danish cheese. Al Faris Food Industries (AFFI), AFG s other subsidiary, was established in 2000, provides 37% of the Group s revenue and is considered to be a pioneer manufacturer of premium quality condiments and sauces in the Middle East. It is a major supplier of natural sugar cane white vinegar to condiment producers in the region. 4

IN THE SPOTLIGHT continued AFFI currently markets its products under the Baidar, Tala, and Pamella brands and, in 2017, plans to launch Tommy, a premium product with a unique flavor profile that caters to local tastes. This new brand will roll out with an initial marketing budget of approximately SAR 4.8M. Within 4 years of its launch in 2000, Baidar, AFFI s flagship brand, became one of the leading brands in Saudi Arabia. AFFI s brands are superior in quality to many imported brands, a factor in strong sales growth. Unlike many imported brands that use potato starch, synthetic vinegar and artificial colors and flavors, AFFI uses maize and natural vinegar giving the product better taste, color and shelf-life. The manufacturing plant is one of the few in the Middle East that produces vinegar using a natural fermentation process. AFFI s foods are made with all natural ingredients and are GMO-free (no genetically modified organisms). A dedicated team maintains high quality by careful testing and monitoring of the raw materials used in order to ensure they meet the company s high standards. The company operates a 13,500 sqm facility in Riyadh, which is equipped with a fermentation plant, 5 bottling lines, 3 sachet lines, 4 cooking machines, a water treatment plant, a laboratory and an onsite warehouse. The facility is accredited with ISO 22000 2005 quality certificate and has been awarded with Tatweej s Gold medal for Excellence and Quality. AFFI also exports its products to the GCC, the Levant, Asia, and some European countries. About Al Faris Group s General Manager As General Manager, Michel Nicolas is the driving force behind Al Faris Group. He s been with the company nearly seven years and has increased sales revenue and profitability with a strategy focused on efficiency, productivity and targeted sales. He brings to AFG, over 20 years experience as a business leader in multinational companies with a success record based on business process improvements, defining company direction and achieving goals. For Al Faris Al Arabi Trading (AFT), Michel increased sales revenue by over 90% during his first five years there through price restructuring and by reducing the cost of trade terms. He also streamlined the portfolio to put greater emphasis on the Group s own brands. For the Group s other subsidiary, Al Faris Food Industries (AFFI), Michel has implemented a number of measures which have increased efficiency and improved the production rate from 40% to 95%. The biggest challenge Michel faces is identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks, including human and financial capital. There are increased costs due to new regulation (saudization) in addition resource management. He also sees anticipating future marketing strategies as a challenge. Michel wants his legacy to be his ethics and leadership. Over the next decade, he envisions the company being the leading manufacturer of condiments and sauces in the region and growing both organically and through acquisition. In his free time, Michel enjoys swimming, listening to music and reading. 5
