Dear church family and friends, January 16, 2017 marks the twenty-first Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration hosted by Wise Baptist Church. It is a reminder of the racial reconciliation that has been accomplished. It is a reminder of the work that remains. The race issue was a central piece of the Civil War conflict. The losses and suffering were catastrophic. The war was nearly over when Abraham Lincoln gave his Second Inaugural Address. He had just been re-elected as President. His speech is considered one of the greatest ever made. Why is that speech considered to be so great? It is short. There are only 703 words, 505 of which are one syllable. There are 25 sentences. It takes five minutes to read out loud. Lincoln tries to come to terms with the meaning of a horrific Civil War and then point the way forward. Interestingly, he quotes the Bible and refers to God more than any presidential Inaugural Address before or since. The concluding paragraph of Lincoln s speech is worth fully quoting. With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation s wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan to do all which may achieve and cherish a just, and a lasting peace among ourselves, and with all nations. Lincoln s closing paragraph is loaded with God-consciousness. The answer is spiritual. God is the only One Who can bring meaning out of such tragedy. The way forward is not for people to blame and judge, but to forgive, promote healing, trust God, and work together. Seems like those thoughts are always true. SEEKING PART-TIME MUSIC DIRECTOR Wise Baptist Church of Wise, Virginia is seeking a part-time Music Director. Responsibilities include: Prepare and lead in rehearsals and worship, support pastor and staff, and guide the music program of the church (adult and children s choirs, handbells, and contemporary band). January 17 January 23 January 24 I had so much fun on Sunday. There was lots of music, lots of food, lots of laughter (at least at my table). Claire and Bruce did such an amazing job sharing special music during worship! It was great to hear, but even greater to see the love on their faces while they played together. January 17 Ray & Carolyn Jones January 18 Jeff & Eileen Cantrell Each week, I try to pick hymns and special music that speak to everyone, but still focus on worship and praises to God. This Little Light of Mine is probably one of the first songs I ever learned and takes me back to a children's choir that my mom directed when I was about 5. The birthday party and luncheon were just what we needed after a lull following a busy holiday season! Folks supported both the Missions and Children s Ministry Teams by attending and giving monetarily. Thank you. Let your light shine this week. MANY THANKS!!! To our wonderful Mission Ministry Team for providing a delicious Italian meal on Sunday after worship! Over $700 was donated towards Missions projects!
