THE GOOD NEWS SEASIDE UCC NEWSLETTER JULY 2017 LETTER FROM PASTOR DAVE For everything there is a season. ~Ecclesiastes 3:1a A friend of mine, the Rev. Mary Scifres, reminded me the other day that summer often brings a different rhythm to the church, with activities different from other times of the year. I wholeheartedly agree. This summer will see more and different changes at Seaside as beloved members and staff move out of state. Like the Feigley family before them, the Bernhards and Abreus leave our community for new challenges in new states across the country. The search for new music leadership will begin. New ideas for church, yet to be conceived, will emerge. And a new school year, and also a fresh new season and chapter in the life of our church, will happen upon us before we know it. So, a reminder for us all to continue to be open and gracious as we live into the future God is bringing about in our midst. Beyond that, this summer brings some annual summer activities, events, and celebrations that provide a good venue for introducing new friends to our church! There is a lot going on as we worship, study, and serve together in so many ways. Imagine if family brought a new person into the life of our great church! That would be amazing. And it s easier than you think. Over 80% of people come to church because someone invites them. So look ahead at the summer calendar. What children in your neighborhood would enjoy Children s Time and Sunday School? Who could you invite to our church BBQ and Vespers? Who might appreciate the opportunity to be of service with our work with Family Promise or help collect school supplies for our Backpack Sunday coming in August? People come to church through many different doors. The doors of summer (and even early fall) are different, often more casual, hands-on, and eclectic. Knowing the Richard Sherman Trio Benefit concert is coming soon on Saturday September 16th, or the BBQ and Outdoor Worship service, or the monthly Brew Theology Bible Study with Tripp Fuller, or the great children s ministry on Sundays think about your friends and neighbors and co-workers who might enjoy being a part of a summer activity with our church, and invite them to put plans on their calendar now. Also, a new summer sermon series entitled Spirit of Summer begins July 9th. It will examine gifts and blessings that the Holy Spirit brings to our lives as followers of Christ. Summer is a season of friendship and fun. Summer at church can be a season for bringing new friends into the missions, service, worship, learning, fellowship, and fun of our church home. And who knows what wonderful things are in store for our music ministry as we search. But more than anything, let us be open to the Spirit of Summer at Seaside. Peace and Blessings, Pastor Dave SEASIDECOMMUNITY Phone: 310 375 4111 UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST SeasideUCC.org 22940 Ocean Ave. Seaside@SeasideUCC.org Torrance CA 90505
