LESSON 14 MARK 14 Day 1 - Read Mark, chapter 14 1. Divide the chapter into sections according to events. This may be done for you in some Bibles. Make a brief outline. 2. Write a sentance summarizing the fourteenth chapter of Mark. Day 2 - Read Mark 14:1-11, Matthew 26:1-16 and John 12:1-11 3. As a dinner is given in Jesus' honor, who are some of the people present? (See also John 11:2) 4. What does Mary do? 5. What is the worth of the perfume? 6. What response does her action draw? Why? 7. Personal: How might you have responded had you been there? 8. In His defense of Mary, what does Jesus say... a) about the poor? b) about Himself? c) about the significance of her action?
9. What effect did Jesus' rebuke have upon Judas? 10. What effect was the rebuke of Jesus intended to have upon Judas? See Proverbs 1:23, Revelation 3:19 and Psalm 94:12. 11. There may not be presented in Scripture a greater contrast of responses to Christ than is presented in this short passage. Please share any thought of inspiration, lesson or warning that comes to you in reflecting on this. Day 3 - Mark 14:12-31 with additional references. 12. The Passover arrives. Please review Exodus 12:1-28 and 13:14-16, and briefly describe what it was they were remembering. 13. In the book of Deuteronomy, Moses final words to God's people, he reviews the Exodus from Egypt and its meaning. Read the following references and summarize the thoughts given. a) Deut. 6:20-25 b) Deut. 7:7-9 c) Deut. 10:17-22 d) Deut. 11:1-4 e) Deut. 26:1-11 What was God's purpose for bringing His people out of Egypt? (See also Psalm 105:42-45) 14. Please review the next set of verses and briefly summarize the meaning of Christ's sacrifice. a) 1 John 2:1-3
b) 1 John 3:7-10 4. c) Hebrews 10:12-17 For what purpose was Christ sacrificed? 15. Do you see a parallel between the two events, and if so - please explain. 16. Now that we have reviewed the spiritual significance of the Passover, let's look at the Last Supper. Read John 13:1 What was in Jesus' heart as He prepares to eat this Passover feast with His disciples? 17. As you read today's passage from Mark, what else was weighing heavily upon His heart, so heavily that Matthew, Mark and John record it as the first thing Jesus said to the 12 as they sat down to eat? 18. Read through the accounts of the Last Supper and share its meaning to you. (Also in Matthew 26:26-29 and Luke 22:14-19) Days 4 and 5 - Read Mark 14:27-51 with additional references 19. Review Mark 14:18-19 with John 13:22. How have the disciples just reacted to the news that one of them would betray Him? 20. Read vs. 27. Now what does Jesus predict? 21. Who is first to respond? What does he say? 22. Read Luke 22:31-32. How does Jesus reply to Peter's self-confident statement?
23. Read John 17:6-19. What in this prayer could be an example of Christ's intercession for Peter? 24. What does that mean to you? 25. In Mark 14:32-42, Jesus struggles with overwhelming sorrow. Why? Did Jesus even need those legions of angels? 30. How freely did Jesus go to the cross? Day 6 - Read Mark 14:53-72, Matthew 26:57-75, Luke 22:54-65 and John 18:12-17 and 25-27 25. The questioning of Jesus before Caiaphas is the second of six "trials" that He endures throughout the night. What is the motive behind this trial? 26. As you read the accounts of this trial, what do you learn about the case against Jesus? 27. To what accusation does Jesus remain silent? Read John 2:19. Was this an accurate representation of what Jesus had said? 28. Why do you think He chose to remain silent? 29. To what question does Jesus give an answer? 30. What does He say? 31. Why do you think He said that? 32. How do the priests react? 33. Meanwhile Peter was present. How did he get there and who was he with? How might they have known that Peter was one of the 12? 34. And yet Peter kept insisting what?

LESSON 14 - MARK 14 ADDITIONAL STUDIES FROM THE DESIRE OF AGES Day 1 - Chapter 62 "The Feast at Simon's House" 1. As the chapter opens, it discusses the attitudes and the positioning of all those who will be involved in Christ's trial and crucifixion. Briefly note what you learned in the discussion of each of the following: a) The people - b) The Pharisees - c) Judas - d) Mary - 2. Why did Jesus not rebuke Judas as He might have, exposing his thievery and selfishness? 3. In the passage on Judas' response to and betrayal of Jesus, was there a lesson you learned and would be willing to share? 4. What lesson for the disciples, and for us today, was there in Mary's gift? 5. In the discussion on Simon's response to Mary and Christ's parable for him, what thought was new or especially meaningful to you?
6. What did you learn about Jesus in this chapter as He dealt with Judas, Simon and Mary, and how have you make Him your example in dealing with others? Day 2 - Chapter 71 "Servant of Servants" 7. The anguish of the Savior s heart is discussed in the opening paragraphs and throughout the chapter. What thought(s) meant the most to you? 8. In the discussion on the issues causing dissension among the disciples, what lesson or warning for us today did you find? 9. In this act of love and mercy for the 12, as Jesus washes their feet, was there a thought presented that was new or notable to you: a) concerning Judas - b) concerning Peter - c) concerning us - Day 3 - Chapter 72 "In Remembrance of Me" 10. This chapter opens with the significance of the two ceremonies that represent Christ's death, the Passover and the Communion. What thought presented was meaningful or new to you? 11. Christ again speaks of His betrayal. In the narrative that describes the scene around the table that night and the discussion of Judas' final decision, what did you learn? This might be a lesson, warning or a new insight into Christ's great love. 12. How was Christ's treatment of Judas, including him in the feet-washing and the teaching of the new significance of the wine and bread, an example to us? 13. What is the purpose of the communion service?
14. What thought in the closing paragraphs of this chapter meant the most to you? Day 4 - Chapter 74 "Gethsemane" 15. Christ's agony in the garden is very well described in this chapter. Please share a thought presented that was most impressive to you concerning: a) The change that came over Christ while in the garden. b) His final confrontation with Satan. c) His separation from His Father. d) His need for human understanding and support, and the lack of it. e) His decision to save us. 16. In the passages that describe the betrayal of Christ and His arrest by the mob, please share a thought that was new or especially interesting to you. Day 5 - Chapter 75 "Before Annas and the Court of Caiaphas" 17. Why was Jesus brought before Annas? 18. In the passages describing the trial before Annas what did you learn about: a) The special temptation that was bearing down upon Jesus? b) Jesus' conduct and answers? 19. In the discussion of the trial before Caiaphas, what new or interesting thought did you learn concerning: a) Caiaphas?
b) The charges against Jesus? c) Jesus and His answer to the question about His relationship to God? 20. Why did Jesus' statement about the Second Coming have such a dramatic effect on Caiaphas? What were the consequences? How was the rent robe a symbol of the Jewish nation? 21. As the chapter turns to the denial of Christ by Peter, it is explained why Peter was questioned and John was not. Please pull out a few of those thoughts and the lesson they contain for you. 22. As you read through the passage on Peter's experience, what was most touching to you: a) In the moment of conviction? b) In Gethsemane? 23. The last paragraphs describe the final scenes of Christ's trial before the Sanhedrin. Please share whatever thought was most meaningful to you. Day 6-24.
