Rev. Mike Winters Pastor Leigh Clark Minister of Music & Youth Dr. Ray Jones, Jr. Pastor Emeritus WISE BAPTIST NEWS A PUBLICATION FOR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF WISE BAPTIST CHURCH A place for faith and fellowship with family and friends. Dear church family and friends, In Judges 7 Gideon faces an enormous Midianite army. The army of Israel is greatly outnumbered even before the battle begins. Then the Lord shrinks the army from 32,000 down to 300. The purpose? So that Israel may not boast that they won the battle on their own. In other words, Gideon s army must become so small that there is no way they can take credit (and not give God proper credit and glory). It means that we often tend to leave God out of the picture. The key verse is Judges 7:7 where God says to Gideon, I will save you. Once they understand that, there is power for God to do what only God can do. What are some areas in which we have left God out of the picture and not allowed room for God to do what only God can do? We see God when we allow room for Him to help us do His work. There is a simple, beautiful song that expresses the yearning of the human spirit to know God. It is called Open Our Eyes, Lord. Will you reflect on the words with me.? Open our eyes, Lord. I want to see Jesus. To reach out and touch Him. And say that we love Him. Open our ears, Lord. And help us to listen. Open our eyes, Lord. We want to see Jesus. My prayer for all of us is this, Dear God, grant us eyes to see You, ears to hear You and feet to obey You. Announcements WEDNESDAY NIGHT ACTIVITIES September 2nd Dinner at 6, Bible Study at 6:45 Choir rehearsal at 7:50 Plan to join us and invite a friend! 54 adults have already signed up. Don t miss out! The studies offered this session for adults: Praying for Your Adult Children Taught by Terry Winters. Concerns for our children continue long after children move out. Parents cannot protect children from life. The best thing to do is to intentionally, consistently release them into God s loving care. This is a great time to pray with and for one another. Spiritual Gifts Taught by Mark Clark. This important subject is greatly misunderstood. Gain a deeper Biblical understanding to help you see your part and how that coordinates with others in God s greater plan. Exodus: Liberated for Life in Covenant with God. Taught by Pastor Mike. Exodus is for everyone, the story of all of us. It is the journey away from things that weigh us down, hold us captive, and into freedom and forgiveness as we follow God. He walks with us and supplies our need as we face each obstacle along the way. UVA-WISE BCM Our first BCM luncheon will be Monday, September 7 from 11 am 1 pm. ALMA HUNT OFFERING September 13 The Alma Hunt offering provides funding for all WMU missions, ministries, outreach projects, etc. We have been the beneficiary of these ministries through the SW VA Partnership. There will be a special offering envelope insert in the bulletin on Sunday, September 13 for you to use if you would like to donate over and above your regular tithe to this important cause. You can learn more about the Alma Hunt offering and ministry by visiting www.bgav.org. TOGETHER WE RISE Hello Church Family, I have recently begun a fundraiser to purchase sweetcases for children being removed from their homes to be placed in foster care. I decided to start this campaign after learning that most children being placed in foster care receive a trash bag to put their belongings in when they are removed from their home. I think every child deserves something better than a trash bag, and I am endeavoring to raise $500 to go towards the purchase of sweetcases, which will be donated to CPS at the end of the campaign. There are two ways you can help. You can donate directly to the campaign, or you can make a purchase from Misty Belcher, Independent Beauticontrol Consultant. Misty is putting together a special collection of products, and 100% of the profits will go towards the sweetcase campaign. I will ask you to prayerfully consider contributing to this cause. Love, Tabitha Ray The link to the fundraising page online is: Http://www.togetherwerise.org/fundraise/wisecounty

From Leigh September 5 Sam Wharton September 7 Kathy Helton Gwen Chisenhall Oh my! What a wonderful day of worship at WBC! I would especially like to thank the sanctuary choir, Misty Belcher, and Susan Mullins for the beautiful music! I was also very touched with the personal testimony of Matt Collins. Our time of worship was also blessed with a great number of visitors including many college students and several families. Most everyone I talked to had been asked by someone to come to church! AMEN! Finally we ended the evening with an amazing experience at Norton Cinema watching the new movie, War Room. There were over 75 people in our theater! And, there were other churches there as well! Imagine what God can do with all of us in our community becoming prayer warriors! WOW! Prayer has power when we approach the Throne surrendering ourselves to the God of the Universe. We need a strategy, though. I often pray for God to change my circumstances or other people...but, really I should pray, God change ME! When I ask God to change me, everything about me changes my outlook, my attitude everything. I believe we should come together to pray for our church. We should call on God to show up and show out for His church, His people, and His leaders in a mighty way that only God is capable of doing. We need a prayer strategy! So... We will have the church sanctuary open for prayer on Saturday, September 12 from 6 am to 6 pm. See me this week to sign up for a 30 minute prayer slot. I am praying for all of you this week. Pray for each other, too. Blessings, Leigh YOUTH: ROCKIN THE SMOKIES, SEPTEMBER 5: We will leave at 6:30 am on the 5th and should return before dinner on the 6th. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes for the park. On Sunday, we will have a time of worship, do some hiking, and possibly go to the outlet stores (if we have time). You will need your Bible, toiletry items, money for meals, sunscreen, & bug spray. I have permission slips available this week for everyone to fill out. WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Hope to see all of you on Wednesday night for dinner () and Bible study (6:45). September 6 Joe & Reba Smiddy September 7 Roger & Beverly Viers COLLEGE ADDRESSES Parents, please let us know the mailing address of your college student so that our church family can keep in touch with them throughout the school year!
