The Daily Warm-Ups series is a wonderful way to turn extra classroom minutes into valuable learning time. The 180 quick activities one for each day of the school year address issues of character. These daily activities may be used at the very beginning of class to get students into learning mode, near the end of class to make good educational use of that transitional time, in the middle of class to shift gears between lessons or whenever else you have minutes that now go unused. In addition to presenting students with the basic themes of character education, they are a natural path to other classroom activities involving critical thinking. Daily Warm-Ups are easy-to-use reproducibles simply photocopy the day s activity and distribute it. Or make a transparency of the activity and project it on the board. You may want to use the activities to reinforce student awareness of character issues and to promote critical-thinking skills that are built and acquired over time. However you choose to use them, Daily Warm-Ups are a convenient and useful supplement to your regular lesson plans. Make every minute of your class time count!

General What Year Is It? Did you know that our concept of time is affected by religion? The calendar we use in the United States is called the Gregorian calendar. It is named for Pope Gregory XIII. This calendar was developed for use by the Christian Church. It marks years as beginning with the birth of Christ. The abbreviation B.C. means before Christ. The abbreviation A.D. means anno Domini, or in the year of the Lord. Today, we often use the term Common Era (C.E.) instead of A.D. and before the Common Era (B.C.E.) for B.C. Religions Daily Warm-Ups: World In contrast, the Islamic calendar used in some Islamic countries marks years as beginning with the Hegira, the year that Muhammad emigrated from Mecca to Medina. The abbreviation A.H. means anno Hegirae, or in the year of the Hegira. The year A.H. 1 is the same as A.D. 622. Other countries use their own official calendars with different months and years. Do you think countries should use a calendar rooted in religion? Or should all countries follow a secular (nonreligious) calendar? Write two or three sentences for your answer. 1

Taoism Lao Tzu as Founder The philosopher Lao Tzu is considered the founder of Taoism. Nobody is sure, though, whether or not he actually existed. We don t even know what his real name was; Lao Tzu means The Old Man or The Grand Old Master. Lao Tzu didn t try to organize a religion. He didn t preach. He only wrote his ideas down because a border patrolman asked him to. Having written the Tao Te Ching, the central scripture of Taoism, Lao Tzu rode off and was never heard of again. The Prodigal Son Christianity The parable of the prodigal, or wasteful, son is found in the New Testament of the Bible. It tells of a man and his two sons. The younger son asked for his inheritance, moved to another country, and spent all his money. Once all his money was spent, the younger son was close to starvation. Finally he decided to return to his father. He felt that his father owed him nothing, since he treated his father ungratefully. He planned to ask his father for a job as a servant. As the son approached the farm, his father saw him and ran to greet him. The father had the servants bring fine robes for his son and prepare a feast. The older son, who had stayed on the farm, was angry about this. He pointed out that he had always obeyed his father and worked hard, but his father had never thrown a party for him. The father replied, Son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and rejoice! This brother of yours was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found. (Luke 15:31 32) Religions Daily Warm-Ups: World What do you think is the message of this parable? Write three or four sentences for your answer. 135

Islam Religions Daily Warm-Ups: World Muhammad Muhammad, the founder and most important prophet of Islam, was born in 570 C.E. in the town of Mecca on the Arabian Peninsula. His father died a few days before Muhammad was born. When he was six, his mother died, and he was given into his grandfather s care. When Muhammad was eight, his grandfather also died. His uncle then took over raising Muhammad. How might life experiences like these affect someone? Write three or four sentences for your answer. 155
