May 21, 2018 Around the Diocese and Parish Neighborhood Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This year, Father s Day is celebrated on June 17. There will be a special collection taken at Masses on June 16-17 to care for our infirmed and senior priests. The Fund for Diocesan Infirmed and Elderly Priests is a special way for the people of the Diocese of Joliet to express their concern for the welfare of those who have dedicated their lives in service to our pastoral care. The money in this fund goes toward priests who need help with extraordinary medical expenses or suffer a catastrophic illness. It also provides for the care of the St. John Vianney Villa, home to several senior priests in the Diocese of Joliet. Prayerfully consider making a donation to help our aged and sick priests as an expression of appreciation for all they have done in exemplifying Christ s mercy, through their spiritual guidance and celebration of the sacraments. On behalf of all the active and senior priests of the diocese, I am grateful for your prayers and for your generous support of the Father s Day Collection for our aged and infirm diocesan priests. Please be assured of my prayers for you. Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet ENGAGING THE POOR Our Members engage the poor and the poor engage our Members. No two engagements are alike. We like to say we meet the poor and disadvantaged where they are. But just as often those in need engage our Members through a phone call to our office, through a referral from someone concerned or simply through a sign carrying appeal at a stop light or walking across a parking lot at a shopping center. Once connected, then trust building begins and a plan of assistance takes shape. Most engagements with the poor consist of matching resources with the basic needs of the individual or family. Most encounters are straight forward and resolvable with a simple shift of resources or combined efforts to fix the need. Job referrals are easy but often job retention is difficult. Some situations in which the poor are found are most difficult and require resources and special assistance well beyond the capacities of our parish Conference. For those we must rely on careful planning with other agencies and individuals that can help both the poor and our Members understand assistance solutions. All of these engagements somehow have marks of distinction known sometimes only by God. Others leave a lasting impression and trust between human beings that both the poor and those who try to help are working together for solutions. What do you do when you see a person begging for help at a stop light or outside a shopping area? Do you offer some help? Do you engage them and learn to understand their needs and how you might offer a solution? Think about helping us help others and engaging the poor in some way in the future if not now.
