INTERNATIONAL PROJECT PROPOSAL PROJECT 1527 ANCOP Housing Bulan Building Hope for the Future Bulan, Philippines And the king will answer them, Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me. Matthew 25:40

We are a Catholic ministry that mobilizes the global Catholic Church to transform the poor and their communities materially and spiritually for the glory of Jesus Christ. Rather than create new institutions to distribute aid, we support existing ministries and churches already serving the poor. In addition to being the most cost-effective way of helping the poor, empowering these ministries allows us to support the Church s spiritual mission and its important position of leadership in poor communities. We consider every gift we receive as a precious resource from God. We direct every donation to its intended project, provide honest and accurate reports to our donors, and keep overhead costs to an industry low. We handle funds with utmost integrity and hold our ministry partners in the field to the same high standards by asking them to document costs and the impact of their outreach. We invite you to join with us as we seek to transform the lives of the poor materially and spiritually ways that please the Father and glorify him in Heaven and on earth.

Description This project will help build 45 homes for destitute families living in Bulan, Philippines. These homes are part of an integral (also known as holistic) program of spiritual and community development that seeks to transform lives and create a Christ-centered community. Purpose To share the Gospel through words and actions. Lives will be transformed, human dignity restored, and moral values will be reinforced through education, spiritual training, vocational training and ongoing community worship services. Our Partners Cross Catholic Outreach partners with ANCOP Housing, Bulan Project 1527 Project Synopsis Since 2006, Cross Catholic Outreach has partnered with Couples for Christ (CFC) to build hundreds of homes for needy families and has covered operational expenses for ongoing social development programs. Couples for Christ s humanitarian ministry, Answering the Cry of the Poor (ANCOP), to build sturdy homes for poor Filipino families living in abject More important, ANCOP equips them with the material and spiritual tools they need to live productive, moral lives. Location Bulan, Philippines. Cost $128,700 will help build 45 homes for families in dire need of safe shelter. Beneficiaries will contribute to building the houses, site development, and a community meeting hall. Highlights Beneficiaries engage in a 13-week spiritual development program that introduces participants to the Catholic faith and invites them to join Couples for Christ. Children and youth benefit from fellowship groups that teach Christian values and lead to membership in Kids for Christ and Youth for Christ fellowships. Microenterprise programs and jobs skills training promote self-sufficiency and the opportunity to break the cycle of poverty and provide hope for future generations. The new homes provide families with physical shelter, while spiritual and social development programs offer residents the biblical foundation and fellowship they need in order to maintain and sustain their new material blessings for generations to come. 1

ANCOP Housing, Bulan Project 1527 The Need For most of us, the word home evokes thoughts of security, comfort and sanctuary. But for our poorest brothers and sisters living in the Philippines, a house is often a primitive thing little more than a rough shelter fashioned from scraps of wood, tin sheets, cardboard and pieces of tattered plastic. When heavy winds and rains come, children often fear these unstable structures will collapse on them, making home feel more like a trap than a refuge. Confined to living conditions like these, many parents and children succumb to resignation and despair. Crime, disease and squalor take a heavy toll on the human spirit, and as a result, some poor families acquire a poverty mindset adopting a culture of hopelessness that dampens any prospect for real change. Sadly, a lack of educational options for children and dwindling economic opportunities for adults exacerbate this problem and perpetuate the cycle of poverty from one generation to the next. Eventually, a spiritual vacuum forms in many slum neighborhoods and turns generational poverty into crippling, pervasive hopelessness. Fortunately, the light of Christian love can overcome this darkness, and Cross Catholic Outreach and its ministry partner, ANCOP, are determined to be part of that renewal. Together, we have a strategy for building new homes that will revive poor neighborhoods and achieve sustainable success by addressing the integral human and spiritual needs at the root of the poor s hopelessness. In this process of restoration, a new house becomes a daily, lasting reminder of God s love to families that once believed they would never escape their deplorable living conditions. Through the safety and security these homes offer, their hope is renewed and their human dignity is restored. A welcome home These basic homes include plumbing and electrical wiring. Prayer precedes and concludes daily construction on each house. Building these homes is cost-effective, due to the active participation of housing beneficiaries and volunteers. 2

ANCOP Housing, Bulan Project 1527 Ministry Description To achieve its goals and lift poor Filipino families out of abject poverty, Cross Catholic Outreach partners with Answering the Cry of the Poor (ANCOP) a humanitarian ministry of the Couples for Christ movement. To begin this process of integral transformation, the caring staff at ANCOP reaches out to the new homeowners with the love exemplified by Jesus Christ. Their goal uses discipleship to transform the generational cycle-of-poverty mentality toward one of unity, collaboration and fellowship, just as the early church did under Christ s direction. To accomplish this, beneficiaries are first introduced to a 13-week Christian Life Program to promote spiritual development. After the program, couples are invited to join Couples for Christ and to meet with other members in the community for weekly prayer meetings. Upon completion of the program, the new homeowners are also eligible to avail themselves of programs to empower them and promote self-sufficiency. Programs include vocational training and governmentsponsored livelihood seminars, as well as receiving help enrolling in state hospitalization benefits. The new homes provide families with physical safety and shelter, while spiritual and social development programs offer residents the biblical foundation and fellowship needed to maintain and sustain their community for Cross Catholic Outreach partners with organizations that implement integral ministry strategies, and we create strong bonds of Christian fellowship with partners based on mutual love, respect and service empowered by the Holy Spirit. generations to come. These programs are necessary because unless hearts, values and relationships are transformed, these new communities could quickly become run-down. Only Jesus can transform hearts, and that s why prayer groups, retreats and Christian formation programs for all ages are vital for this new community s continued success. Different activities will help beneficiaries build and maintain a model community, one that is rooted in Christ, where all members see themselves as a part of the body of Christ, in full communion with the church. In this way, the community will be transformed and be united by a common love for God expressed daily through communal faith celebrations, practices and principles. We Christians were not chosen by the Lord for small things; push onwards toward the highest principles. Stake your lives on noble ideals! Pope Francis Father s Day Message, 2014 3

ANCOP Housing, Bulan Project 1527 Help Now! A home provides families with the foundational base needed to build a brighter future. It s a place where dreams and hopes are nurtured, prayers arise and healthy memories are born and take root. It draws families together and sustains stability in their lives. God delights in each of his children, and calls us all to love one another as he loves us. Please prayerfully consider helping our poorest brothers and sisters living in appalling poverty in substandard shelters that are dangerous, demoralizing and dehumanizing. Let God s love and compassion shine through you and provide a beacon of hope to those living in the darkness of despair. Jesus laid the foundation of his ministry among a few disciples, and it has grown throughout the world. Today, you can sow the seeds of his message in a small community that will bear the fruit of Christian fellowship and solidarity for generations. Your generous gift today will be an ongoing legacy of the power of Christ s love and compassion to transform lives. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. Luke 4:18 Our Promise to You! Proceeds from this campaign will be used to cover any expenditures for this project incurred through June 30, 2018, the close of our ministry s new fiscal year. In the event that more funds are raised than needed to fully fund the project, the excess funds, if any, will be used to meet the most urgent needs of the ministry. 4 2700 N.
