PAGE 3 CYPRUS NEWS Potentate s Message My Noble Brothers, On 4/22/2017, we celebrated the Spring Ceremonial at one of the most historic places in the Hudson Valley, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library & Museum. The elected and appointed Divan present were: Chief Rabban, Dave Unser, Assistant Rabban, Bob Baker, High Priest and Prophet, John Donato, Oriental Guide, Chris Wessell, Treasurer, Jim Pulver, Recorder and PP, Karl Koch, 1st Ceremonial Master, Steve Pavlak, 2nd Ceremonial Master, Don Baker, Chaplain, Jack Schoonmaker, Assistant Chaplain, Eric Maribito, Trustee and PP, Tom Leary. What a Historic day it was for me to initiate new Candidates at the home of our Noble Brother Franklin Delano Roosevelt! President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the longest serving president in the history of the United States. He was president from 1933 to 1945, and the ONLY President in US history to be a member of Cyprus Shrine. President Roosevelt was raised on November 28, 1911 as a member of the Holland Lodge #8 in New York City. On March 26, 1930, he became a Noble Shriner in Cyprus Temple, Albany New York. He was also a 32nd degree Mason, with membership in Scottish Rite in Albany #1, Greenwood Forest, Tall Cedars of Lebanon in Warwick, N.Y., and Prophet at Sight in Tri-Po-Bed Grotto, of Poughkeepsie NY, to name a few. President Roosevelt also had many honorary memberships in lodges across our country. He raised his sons Franklin Jr. and James at Architect Lodge #519 in NYC. He was also honorary Grand Master of Georgia and Honorary Grand Master of the Order of De- Molay. President Roosevelt truly understood the great work done by the Shriner Hospitals for the children that could not do for themselves. While vacationing at Campobello Island, New Brunswick in the summer of 1921, Roosevelt contracted polio. Despite his courageous efforts to overcome this crippling disease, he never regained the use of his legs. In time, he established a foundation at Warm Springs, Georgia to help polio victims. He inspired as well as directed the March of Dimes program that eventually funded an effective vaccine. He had great respect and support for the Shrine Hospitals and the good work they do. I am so proud, extremely grateful, and truly humbled to have the opportunity to serve as your Potentate for 2017. My mission is simple. It is to Raise Money and Awareness for the Shrine Hospitals and the good work they do. We are part of the World s Greatest Philanthropy in helping those children who are not able to help themselves. For this reason, I chose the Silent Messenger as my Potentate s Pin. NO MAN OR WOMEN STANDS SO TALL UNTIL HE OR SHE STOOPS TO HELP A CHILD! Today with 34 Noble Brothers present, we initiated 15 new candidates into Cyprus Shrine No.5. Each New Noble was presented with a Fez and the Potentate s Pin, They were asked to wear the pin proudly and often to help raise awareness for the Shrine Hospitals and the great work they do. At this time, I presented a Cyprus Shrine 100-year anniversary Pin and a Potentate s Aide Pin, to the newly elected President of the Adirondack Shrine Club, Grover La Fountain. He also works many Thursday and Friday nights at the Bingo Hall for the benefit of Cyprus Shrine. I thank you my Noble Brother!! Cyprus Shrine owes you much gratitude. Next, I thanked my former 6th grade student Jeff Urban, the Education Specialist for The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Library for his tireless efforts in helping me make this day possible. Lastly I thanked Eric Morabito, who once again, will walk to Springfield and Boston Hospitals to raise money and awareness for the good work they do. You are a great Crusader for Cyprus Shrine. We are so fortunate! After the Ceremonial was complete, everyone had the opportunity to visit the home and grounds of our past President and Noble Brother. We then proceeded to the Hyde Park Brewery for light lunch and refreshment. A good time was had by all, with fellowship and brotherly love. Yours in the Faith, Illustrious Sir Anthony Prizzia

PAGE 4 Chief Rabban s Message Nobles, First and foremost I would like to thank the Nobility for electing me to the office of Chief Rabban for 2017 and affording me the opportunity to serve you for another year! As you all know much has been happening at the new Shrine Center with renovations. There have been several work parties that have been such a large piece of getting us where we are today. I would like to publicly thank all those Nobles who answered the call to help out and put in some work! Please come out to the next event and see how well the renovation came out. Plenty of pictures are on the Cyprus Facebook page and soon will be added to the website. The Greater Albany Shrine Club hosted its spring meeting at the temple with approximately 30 Nobles in attendance, including our Potentate along with a few PP s! The food and libations were excellent and I do believe that all had a very enjoyable experience. We have another Cigar Cruise scheduled for Sunday June 25, 2017, boarding at 3:30 PM, Dock Party at 7:00 PM. $50.00 pp includes 3 premium cigars, 1 Habana hand rolled cigar, buffet dinner by Ama Cocina, Albany Distilling Co. tasting and cash bar. This event is CO-ED! Noble Will Yager is putting this event together for us again this year so you know it will be a great time! The Potentate and Divan have been traveling around the realm attending many of the clubs and units meetings. It has been a pleasure to see both old and new faces that can t always make it to the temple. If we haven t seen you yet, be on the lookout! MEMBERSHIP! Nobles please participate in Temple, Clubs, and Unit events! Enjoy yourself and talk about your experience at Lodge and with your friends and family. You never know who is listening and where the next new Noble is coming from. If the next event you attend isn t fun, ask yourself what you could do to make it better and volunteer to help out at the next event. Reach out to new and seasoned Nobles and get them involved. If you are a first line signer, where are your guys now and what are they doing? Your Potentate and Divan are here to help you with any questions and/or resources with membership. All you have to do is ask. We all need to remember that Blue Lodge is where it all starts. Support your Blue Lodge and be an ambassador for the Shrine! Yours in the Faith, David M. Unser, Sr., Chief Rabban IN MEMORIAM S ince our last newsletter the following Nobles were called to the Celestial Lodge. Noble Robert Barr Noble Robert Dunn Noble Robert Hendrickson Noble Albert Parshall When Allah calls, then our friends obey, And fold their tents and steal away, To the land where the crystal waters flow, Where the beautiful Palms of Allah grow. PAGE 5 CYPRUS NEWS New Cyprus Website is Online To help improve communication in Cyprus, the new Cyprus Website is now online. It can be found at www.cyprusshriners.com. The Temple calendar, application for membership, newsletters and other info is on there. We will be adding more functionality including an online sign up for an email and/or text reminder system, online payments and integration with social media in the near future. There is also a link to the Cyprus app. Right now this is for Cyprus members only. The app has the calendar, messaging and a newsfeed page for your smartphone. It works on Apple and Android devices Check it out and let us know what you think. Your feedback is important to us as this is your website, Nobles. We want it to work for you. Divan Visits the Workers at Shrine Bingo On February 10th, your Potentate, Ill. Tony Prizzia, Chief Rabban, Dave Unser and Assistant Rabban, Bob Baker traveled to the Schenectady Bingo Palace to thank the workers for all of their hard work supporting Cyprus Shrine and our Hospitals. It was great to see the dedication of these Nobles. They give a considerable amount of their time to this endeavor and it is greatly appreciated. There were about 200 people there and the workers knew all of them. That personal touch made the experience for the player that much more enjoyable. If you want to join in the fun, contact our Recorder at recorder@cyprusshriners.com and he will put you in contact with the right people. Great work and know that the Divan and Cyprus Shrine appreciate all that you do.

MEMBERSHIP, MEMBERSHIP, MEMBERSHIP! PAGE 6 It has come to my attention that the past methods used for membership and retention are somewhat lacking. We need to take a new approach. The elected Divan of Cyprus Shrine will take the leadership and responsibility of the Membership Committee, and I will be the Chairman. My Noble Brother, the Imperial Outer Guard, Sir Kevin Costello stated, Just get one. He asked each Noble bring in one new member. You can only get one if you stay active in your mother lodge. Tampa is encouraging Communication and Engagement. I am in total agreement. The Divan and I have brought in about 25 new members in the first 4 months of 2017. This was accomplished through Lodge Communication and Engagement. The incubator for new members is the Masonic Lodge. Each new member installed into Cyprus Shrine must be a brother from a Masonic Lodge in good standing. I am asking you to become more active in your Lodge. I challenge each and every Noble Brother from Cyprus Shrine to attend 4 meetings per year. I want you to communicate and engage with your Lodge Brothers as the conduit to Cyprus Shrine. I am extremely confident this new approach will have wide spread success. The future growth of Cyprus Shrine depends on your ability to communicate and engage with your Masonic Brothers for recruitment. Let s go back to our mother lodges with Shrine applications to seek out new candidates for Cyprus Shrine. Please remember, when you were made a Mason in the Northeast corner of your lodge, it was to symbolize the foundation on which to build your Masonic career. By neglecting your lodge, you are eroding away the foundation on which the Cyprus Shrine was built. Thank you for all you do. Illustrious Sir Anthony Prizzia President and Cyprus Noble FDR s Original Application to become a member of Cyprus Temple Cyprus Newest Nobles at the Ceremonial

PAGE 7 CYPRUS NEWS Greetings Fellow Nobles, I became a Shriner in 2010. At my Ceremonial, Ill. Ben Froggett asked the question Why did you want to become a Shriner. My answer, as well as that of all of the other new Nobles, was To help children. I now like to ask the following question of Nobles, What do you do to help the children? As many of you already know, I am the Crazy Walking Guy. I starting walking as a way to improve my health in 2008. In 2011 I found a way to incorporate my walking to raise some money for the Shriners. In 2014 I had the idea to walk to the Springfield hospital. I dubbed it Walking for Children Springfield or Bust because, at 50 years old, I didn t know if I would be able to complete a 180+ mile walk on my own. It was challenge but I was successful and I raised $2300. I repeated the walk in 2015 and did 198 miles in 7 days and raised $5228. In 2016 I added an additional leg to the trip and continued on to Boston. This time it was 256 miles and took me 8 ½ days to complete. In total, $8300 was raised. On May 18 th, 2017 I set out once again on my little adventure. It will be a repeat of last years route and my goal is to raise $12,000. This year the money is being split between the Springfield Hospital (50%), the Cyprus Transportation Fund (25%) and the hospitals in Boston & Philadelphia (25%). The money earmarked for Springfield is going towards the new Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit that is being established at a cost of around $900,000. Now you know one of the things I do to help the children. I invite each of you to come up with something that you can do to help (it does not need to be something as crazy as a 250+ miles walk). Believe me, you will benefit greatly by doing something to help others. I would also ask that you help me with my walk. Any contribution would be greatly appreciated. If you are unable to make a donation, please help me by telling others about my walk and helping me get people to sponsor me. I guarantee that you will get peoples attention if you tell them I know this guy who s a little crazy. You won t believe what he s doing to help kids I have been posting updates and information about my walk on the Cyprus Facebook page. If you have any questions, please contact me. Thank you my Brothers. Fraternally yours, Eric Morabito 10 Edgewood Dr. New Paltz, NY 12561 845-255-7528 morabitoeric@gmail.com Remember the 100 Million Dollar Club? Gerry Irwin, Springfield Hospital Representative Years ago, Cyprus News listed Shriners, ladies, units, and Shrine Clubs who had donated to something called the 100 Million Dollar Club. Many times, these donations were in memory of a departed Noble or family member. I haven t seen any mention of this type of giving to our Hospitals in a VERY long time in our Temple publication. I suspect that newer Nobles may have never heard of the 100 Million Dollar Club. Now you may ask, What is the difference between making a regular or memorial gift to the Hospitals and making a donation thru the 100 Million Dollar Club? Don t both go to the same place? Well, yes and no. A regular donation to the Hospitals is expended immediately to help meet the ongoing costs of running a specific hospital or the overall system of hospitals. So, what is different about the 100 Million Dollar Club? This Club was formed in 1972 to add $100 million to the endowment fund with contributions of $100.00 at a time. Money is added to the permanent endowment of the Shriners Hospital system. Dollars donated this way live on to keep working for the benefit of all Shriners Hospitals well into the future. If you would like to make a 100 Million Dollar Club donation of a minimum of $100.00, simply make out a check to 100 Million Dollar Club or Shriners Hospitals for Children with 100 Million Dollar Club on the memo line and send it to the Recorder. He will send it to Shriners Hospitals for Children, Tampa FL. Address: Recorder, PO Box 12473, Albany, NY 12212-2473. It is also possible to become a 100 Million Dollar Club member by adding a bequest to your will in the amount of at least $100.00 benefiting Shriners Hospitals for Children. Donations to the 100 Million Dollar Club are 100% tax deductible.

PAGE 8 DID YOU KNOW? (OR EVER CARE?) The Guinness Book of World Records was created by Sir Hugh Beaver, then the managing director of the Guinness Brewery. Secure, relatively high-yielding stocks came to be called blue chips, a term taken from the game of poker, where blue chips are more valuable than white or red chips. Bad Puns A piece of string walked into a bar and said "Gimme a beer!" but the bartender said "Get outta here! We don't serve your kind here!" So the string left, but he was thirsty, and he really wanted a beer, so he messed up his hair real badly and tied himself into a knot. When the string went back into the bar, the bartender looked at him suspiciously and said "Aren't you that worthless piece of string I just threw outta here?" No, the string replied, "I'm a frayed knot!" "Almost" is the longest word in the English language with all the letters in alphabetical order. The initials M.G. on the famous British-made automobile stand for "Morris Garage." The name of the statuette atop the hood of every Rolls Royce car is The Spirit of Ecstasy. There was a man who entered a local paper's pun contest. He sent in ten different puns hoping at least one of the puns would win but, unfortunately, no pun in ten did. There were two ships. One had red paint, one had blue paint. They collided. At last report, the survivors were marooned.

PAGE 9 CYPRUS NEWS Honoring and Remembering Imperial Sir Jack Jones IMPERIAL SIR JACK H. JONES worked tirelessly over the past 37 years to support and serve the fraternity at the national level. He served Shriners International as Imperial Recorder for 36 years, Executive Vice President for five, Imperial Potentate for one, and received countless accolades and honors, including the Imperial Potentate s Award of Merit, which is the highest honor in the fraternity. Jones was also known as one of the most dedicated and genuine people to work alongside a reputation he has earned by leading the fraternity with grace and pride. Imperial Sir Jack Jones was initially elected Imperial Recorder in 1979, and served in that position, or as Imperial Potentate, until his death. During much of his time as Imperial Recorder, he also served as Director of Membership Development. Imperial Sir Jack Jones also served as Chairman of the Masonic Relations and DeMolay Committees during the majority of this time. During his time as Imperial Potentate, Imperial Sir Jones focused on bringing people together, developing modern membership solutions and realizing and recognizing the fraternity s global impact and its potential. Jones theme for the year was "Unity Wins." Imperial Sir Jack Jones did not permit this confinement to a wheelchair to confine his spirit or his travels. He was a frequent speaker at Masonic events throughout the world and was a well-known and well-respected Masonic leader. While serving Shriners International, Jones also met many high-profile figures, including the Queen of England and President Ronald Reagan, who he had the privilege of personally making an honorary member of the fraternity. While serving as Imperial Potentate, Jones also had the pleasure of meeting the world s oldest man and 113-year-old Shriner, Walter Breuning. "Imperial Sir Jack Jones has been a fixture on the boards of Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children for decades," said Imperial Potentate Chris Smith. "With the passing of Jack Jones, all Masons and all Shriners have experienced a great loss. He was a truly great Shriner, an example to all." Ambassador Unit Election and Installation of Officers Have you told your Lady and Family that when you pass on, to give your Masonic effects (Fez, jewelry, uniform, etc.) to a Mason in your family or give the to the Shrine? Cyprus will give them to some deserving Noble, or return them to the proper Masonic organization. PLEASE DO NOT let these Shrine and Masonic items end up on garage sales, flea markets or the wrong hands

Cyprus Shriners PO Box 12473 Albany, NY 12212 St. Patrick s Day Parade Mike Gonzales and I had the pleasure of marching in the St. Patrick s Day Parade, with 11 Noble Brothers and Fred s lady Amy and her daughter, Sarah, who played violin the entire walk. Of the 9 that marched, 8 were from Adonai Lodge. I want to thank Anthony Prizzia Jr., Robert Reifmuller, Steve Pavlak, Eric Morabito, Fred Ganzer, Chris Brand, Scott Schoonover, Mike Gonzales for marching, and Noble Mike Lopez for driving the Shrine van, and Noble Eric Kitchen, who rode in the van and kept Mike company. I want to thank each of you for coming out on a very bitter cold day to support Mike Gonzales, your Ulster County Shrine Club President, and me, your Potentate from Cyprus Shrine. We shared many stories of Brotherhood on our walk down Broadway. Then it was back to Chic s Sports Bar for lunch and more Brotherhood. Thank you My Noble Brothers for all you do. Cyprus Shrine is so fortunate! Yours in the Faith, Illustrious Sir Tony
