A Letter from Father. Page 2 October 9, 2011 More on the Revised Roman Missal. When we start using the revised Roman Missal, one of the biggest changes you ll notice is the words of the Gloria. The rules governing the use of this prayer have not changed. We will still sing or recite it on all Sundays of the year, except for those during Advent and Lent. The text of the Gloria has changed so much that composers have written new and revised existing musical settings for it. Here, briefly, are the changes in the Gloria with some explanations about them: The revised translation changed: His people on Earth to people of good will. Again, the guiding principle for all translations is to let the English express more literally the sentiment of the original Latin. In this case, the previous text describes to whom the people belong ( his = Gods ), where the NEW one describes their quality ( of good will ). This connects with Luke 2:14. Those familiar with the Christmas story will hear in the opening lines of the Gloria an echo of the angels announcing peace at the birth of Jesus. In the Revised Version, we use these words: We praise you / we bless you / we adore you / we glorify you / we give you thanks for your great glory. / Lord God, heavenly King / O God, almighty Father. This replaces the shorter text in the previous version, which may have seemed a bit excessive. Now, ALL the descriptions of God have been restored and the result is INDEED excessive - but that is the point. We are so overcome with awe in the presence of God that we keep searching for words to describe the experience. The words only begotton Son Son of the Father represent a slight change from the previous version, Only son of the Father. Both express the same dogma, that Jesus is the only son of God, or in Latin, Fili Unigenite. At the words you take away the sins of the world, the phrases appear in different order in the new translation, to imitate the order of words in Latin. There is a small change in this line, SIN singular changes to SINS plural. The difference indicates that Jesus takes away not just generic sin from the world, but INDIVIDUAL SIN. He forgives people their personal sins. All in all, the Gloria roots us in scripture, gives us words to praise God and is an occasion to reflect on the forgiving power of Jesus Christ. Peace,
