2015 Lenten Prayer Guide February 18 April 4 2015 A journey in prayer through Jesus teachings from the Sermon on the Mount Matthew 5-7 The 2015 Lenten Prayer Guide was created to help members engage in a season of prayer around the Sermon on the Mount. It has been compiled by members of the FCBC Worship Arts Team. You can find a digital version of it online at: faithcommunitybiblechurch.org You may use this guide for personal reflection and prayer. Please do not copy it for any other public use without contacting FCBC first.

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Welcome to the Prayer Room This year FCBC is focusing on the Sermon on the Mount and using the Lord s Prayer as a model to pray through the teachings of Jesus as we move through this season of Lent. Following Jesus teachings through this sermon is a lifestyle where...we commit ourselves to obey in these specific areas; we come up short, we admit it, we repent, we ask for forgiveness, we recommit ourselves to obeying in that area, and we push delete on yesterday s failures so that we have the confidence of a first-class citizen standing before God with full confidence. We fail again, we acknowledge it, we declare war on it, we recommit ourselves to obey, we push delete, and we have confidence again in the present tense. That s the pinnacle; the high point of the sermon is that it would motivate people to have courage that they can walk in all the light God gives them.* How to use this prayer guide at home: The Prayer Guide is divided into eight sections with dates to help you move through each section. Different passages from Matthew 5-7 are attached to each section along with some questions to help you pray through the passages. Use them as a starting point. Allow God to guide you through your prayer time. How to use this Prayer Guide in the FCBC Prayer Room The FCBC Prayer Room is divided into seven stations that coincide with the way the Lord s Prayer is divided up in the Prayer Guide. You can go through the room by order, one station and then the next...this will take you through the room in the order of the prayer as it appears in scripture. Or you can choose to dwell at one station and move on to another one as the Holy Spirit leads you. Each station will have something for you to interact with to help you think and pray through Jesus teachings in the Sermon on the Mount and God s father heart for you. At any point you can refer to the Prayer Guide for questions and reflections that may help you enter into your prayer time more deeply. The icons in the book match the banners over each prayer station. *Mike Bickle: http://mikebickle.org/resources/series/sermon-on-the-mount 2015 Lenten Prayer GuidE 1

February 18 22 Enter The Presence of God Lord, help us to learn to pray as you pray, Teach us to pray in a fresh, deep way...amen. Matthew 6:5-15 And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. This, then, is how you should pray: Minister to God as you honor his name. Listen a moment to God and pray for the areas he reveals to you. How and where could his Kingdom increase? In what areas of your life do you need more of God s influence? Submit these areas to him. Amen.* For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. Matthew 6:16-18 When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Matthew 7:13-14 Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. * this last line was added on to the Lord s prayer in later manuscripts. What are your needs today? Acknowledge your dependence on God. Who do you need to forgive? What do you need forgiveness from? Allow God to speak about the areas where you are struggling. Express dependence on Him for the ability to resist temptation. Ask for strength for spiritual warfare. How can you influence the moral and spiritual climate of your world? Pray that you would be salt and light today. Pray for those who FCBC has sent out. How can you encourage them? 2 2015 Lenten Prayer GuidE 3

February 23 28 Be Blessed Lord, we aren t satisfied with outward appearances. We want to have a vibrant spirit, with your anointing touching us. We want to feel connected to you and experience your power. We want to be blessed...amen. Matthew 6:5-15 God calls you to a kingom of blessing. The Holy Spirit reveals what the world often calls weak are in fact blessings of Kingdom power. What is God saying to you about your own poverty of spirit? Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to Him, and He began to teach them, saying: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. It takes grace and faith to live out the way. Ask God to stir up your faith and escort you into the reality of each of these blessings. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Where are you mourning today? Where are you hungering and thirsting? Ask God to help you meet today s challenges. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall be shown mercy. It can be easy to say these words but more difficult to live them out. Where have you missed the mark in any of these areas? Seek forgiveness. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. The enemy of God takes aim at this lifestyle of blessing and wants us to believe these are altruistic and poetic rather than the true power. Ask for wisdom to see the truth and strength to live it out. Pray for Kingdom power of these truths to go throughout the earth. Pray for a greater awareness of your need to experience more of the grace of God in your heart, your ministry, the Church and society at large. This is the prayer of the poor in spirit 4 2015 Lenten Prayer GuidE 5

March 1 5 Overcome the Plank Lord, reveal the areas we stumble in our own lives...amen. Matthew 7:1 Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, Let me take the speck out of your eye, when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother s eye. Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces. What is God saying about the plank in your eye? What is he saying about the planks in our eyes as a community? a nation? Where are we stuck in judgement? In what areas of your life do you need more of God s influence? Submit these areas to him. Refusing Retaliation Matthew 5:38-42 You have heard that it was said, Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth. But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. What are your needs today? Acknowledge your dependence on God. Are there people you have judged? Are there offenses you carry? Release them at the cross. When are you tempted to retaliate? Express dependence on Him for the ability to resist temptation. Speak out the truth of God s heart about judgement and retaliation. Pray for the power of God s peace in the midst of conflict. Pray that you would be salt and light today. Who in your world today is struggling with judgement and anger and feelings of injustice? How can you encourage them? 6 2015 Lenten Prayer GuidE 7

March 6 11 overcome Fear & anxiety Lord, help us rest in the security of your arms...amen. Matthew 6:19-24 Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. Matthew 6:25-34 Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, What shall we eat? or What shall we drink? or What shall we wear? For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 7:7-12 Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. What is God saying regarding the fear in your life? in Madison? in the country and world? What does scripture say about fear? What are you fearing today? Acknowledge your dependence on God. Submit them to God and give him time to reassure you. This is a daily journey. What fears have you been unable to submit to God? Where are you fearful because you don t have the resources or capabilities to solve the problem? Where are you disappointed because you feel God has not answered your prayers? The enemy often takes our fears and amplifies them. Proclaim the truth of God s provision over your life. Over Madison. Over our nation. Proclaim the truth of God s power to break the spirit of fear over the nations. Pray that you would be salt and light today. Pray for those FCBC has sent out, that they would be able to rest in the strength of God. 8 2015 Lenten Prayer GuidE 9

March 12 17 honor relationships Lord, reveal to us where we need reconciliation and help us walk through it...amen. Matthew 5:21-26 You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment. But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, Raca, is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, You fool! will be in danger of the fire of hell. Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift. Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny. Matthew 7:12 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. Listen a moment to God and pray for Kingdom blessing to come to those he lays on your heart who you struggle in relationship with. What is God trying to say about the relationship between your heart and your actions? What needs to change? What difficult encounters are you facing today? Pray for God to give you strength and wisdom, mercy and grace. Pray that all your relationships would be built up in love. Who do you need to be reconciled with before you can lay your gift on the altar? One of the enemy s goals is to divide us and break our relationships. Resist the temptation to hold onto offense. Express dependence on God for the victory. Proclaim the truth of love and reconciliation over the world. Pray that you would be salt and light today. 10 2015 Lenten Prayer GuidE 11

March 18 23 Overcome the Spirit of immorality Lord, we seek purity in our heart and in our actions..amen. Matthew 5:27-30 You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery. But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. Pray for God s revelation to break through. Where have these issues touched your life? What does scripture say about your response. Matthew 5:31-32 It has been said, Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce. But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery. Matthew 5:33-37 Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made. But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God s throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. All you need to say is simply Yes or No ; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. Matthew 7:15-23 Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles? Then I will tell them plainly, I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers! What are your needs today? Acknowledge your dependence on God. Where have you struggled in these areas? These areas can cause great woundedness. Pray for healing. Seek prayer with others. The enemy attacks us in our most vulnerable moments. Express dependence on God for the ability to resist temptation. Ask for strength for spiritual warfare. The world is vulnerable to all of these things and is in great distress from their consequences. Pray that you would be salt and light today. Pray for those FCBC has sent out, that they would be able to minister the truth of God throughout the world. 12 2015 Lenten Prayer GuidE 13

March 24 29 Act justly Lord, help us to love our enemies and those who persecute us...amen. Matthew 5:17-20 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5.43-48 You have heard that it was said, Love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Matthew 6:1-4 Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Matthew 7:21-23 Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who rdoes the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name? And then will I declare to them, I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness. Listen a moment to God. What is he revealing about the relationship between love and justice. In what areas of your life do you need more of God s influence? It s easy to think we are doing God s will when we are often just talking about it. Pray to go deeper. Allow God to transform your heart even more. What are your needs today? Ask God to help you be a person of love and justice today. Who are you struggling to love today? The enemy tries to convince us that we are good because we do kind things and are nice. God says we are good because he is good. Proclaim the goodness and righteousness of God and your dependence on him. Pray for God s true justice to overcome the evil and injustice in this world. Pray that you would be salt and light today. 14 2015 Lenten Prayer GuidE 15

March 30 April 4 Be Salt / be light Lord, help us to learn to pray as you pray, Teach us to pray in a fresh, deep way...amen. Matthew 5:13-16 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 7:24-27 Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash. Ask God how you can please his heart today? Listen a moment to God and pray that his Kingdom would increase in the areas he lays on your heart. In what ways do you have opportunity to put God s word into practice? Submit these to him. What do you need in order to be salt today? Acknowledge your dependence on God. When have you cared more about the flavor of your own life and forgotten your call to be salt to others? The enemy tempts us to become so involved in the issues of our lives that we have no time or capacity to think about others. Proclaim the truth that your true identity is in Christ and through him there is a provision for all your needs and an overflow for others. Ask for strength for spiritual warfare. Pray that you would be salt and light today. 16 2015 Lenten Prayer GuidE 17
