Craig Dear Parishioners, This is the first Sunday of Lent. The season of Lent is a time of penance and conversion. The word actually means Spring. It is 40 days and we await the celebration of Easter. This season asks us to pray, fast and to give alms. Let us use this time to grow deeper in relationship to our Lord. I will be using a little incense at the Masses that I will be celebrating during Lent. Some of you have shared how you miss its use in Church. I will use it in small amounts so that some with asthma won t have to leave the Church. Our parish mission is this week. I hope you can come for some or all. I appreciate Fr. Gillick and Sister Bernadette leading it. Next weekend is the Women s Christ Renew His Parish renewal weekend. If you need time away and want to spend a weekend with the Lord and getting to know other women from the parish, please come. We have plenty of room. Take a registration form on the table in the commons. We will have Stations of the Cross on Fridays at 5:30 and confessions every Thursday from 6:00pm-7:00pm, as well on Saturdays before Mass. Please pick up a copy of our Lent book Resisting Happiness. They can be found in the social hall. Please continue to fill out the parish survey. You can find it at www.disciplemakerindex.com. It will be helpful to us to plan for the future. Drew and I had a great time last week at the Los Angeles Religious Education Conference. I went to talks covering topics of Marriage, Pope Francis, Gospel of Mark, Discipleship, Vibrant Parishes and how to keep our youth in the Church. Such a wonderful experience to attend this every year. I thank you for making it possible. Have a great week. Fr. Good News from St. Pius X/St. Leo School Congratulations to the seventh and eighth graders who represented St. Pius X/St. Leo School at the annual St. Vincent de Paul Book Bowl on Friday, February 10. Team 1--Jenna Abbott, Rylee Gregg, Sam Kastl, Mike Kult, Grace Larson, and Elena Sullivan--were undefeated during their six rounds and won first place out of the 26 competing teams. Team 2--John Burns, Fiona Gautschi, Wistrom Herfordt, Ethan Noon, Grace Ridgely, and Josephine Romano--also competed. Their last round ended with a tie-breaker! Students began preparing for the competition in August when they received the reading list. Team members not only read the 12 books, but they also wrote study cards and character description lists. Many of the students read several of the books twice or even three times. As the competition neared, they then quizzed one another using their study cards and met during lunch to practice. Joyce Gubbels, Principal Lunch Menu M: BBQ Rib Sandwich T: Crispito w/cheese W: Harvest Soup Th: Chicken sandwich F: Egg & Cheese omelet Development Dialogue March 5, 2017 Planning for death is as natural as planning for life. As stated in 1Timothy 5:8, if anyone does not take care of his own, and especially his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. Having a will is good stewardship. Take care of your family first! Then please prayerfully consider remembering our School and/or Parish's Endowment Funds in your will or estate planning. Contact Bob Nowaczyk, SPSL's Development Coordinator at 402-551-6667 for more information. Laity in Liturgy March 5, 2017 Batter my heart, three-person d God, for you yet but knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend; That I may rise and stand, o erthrow me, and bend Your force to break, blow, burn, and make me new. I, like an usurp d town to another due, Labor to admit you, but oh, to no end; Reason, your viceroy in me, me should defend, But is captiv d, and proves weak or untrue. Yet dearly I love you, and would be lov d fain, But am betroth d unto your enemy; Divorce me, untie or break that knot again, Take me to you, imprison me, for I, Except you enthrall me, never shall be free, Nor ever chaste, except you ravish me. This poem by John Donne, encapsulates the human thirst for transformation away from the glamour of evil. A poignant ornament to the examination of conscience: it was meditated upon by J. Robert Oppenheimer during the Manhattan Project leading up to America s first and only wartime usage of Nuclear Arms in 1945. This lent, rather than speaking to you about the Mass, I will be providing, not my own reflections, but a wealth of powerful reflections from the faithful in literature and poetry. Entrance Antiphon When he calls to me, I will answer; I will rescue him and give him honor. Long life and contentment will be his. (Ps 91:15-16) Communion Antiphon One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. (Mt 4: 4) 06 l St. Leo Catholic Church

In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman Temptations fill our lives. From the time we are able to crawl, there is always something that we find hard to resist. Many of those temptations we face are innocent, like a desire to eat a piece of chocolate or maybe a delicious hotdog. When we face a temptation that draws us away from our God that is a serious SIN. In our first scripture reading today we hear how we as humans rebelled against God, by doing exactly what he told us not to do. As an example, it is like God giving us a box of chocolates and telling us we can eat any of them in box, except that one in the gold wrapping. In our arrogance against God, we always ask why shouldn t we have that one? In our Gospel, Jesus has fasted and prayed with his Father for forty days. Satan goes after Jesus just as he goes after our greatest human desires. Our Lord is really hungry and the devil s first temptation is food, but Jesus fires back, One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God." Good advice for all of us. We need to read the scriptures and listen to our Lord. Then the devil tests Jesus with the sin of PRIDE, but Jesus rebukes him by saying, You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test. Often our own pride gets in our way in responding to God s will. Then Satan offers Jesus power on earth, but Jesus commands him to leave and says, The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve." Every time we face a temptation that is harmful, we need to remember to ask our Lord for the grace to put him first in our lives.
