Cemetery Number 69 NW (Cemetery # 70 in the Pike County Alabama Tomb Records) Directions: From the town square, Troy, AL, take Three Notch Street north for two blocks, turn west (left) on to College Street and park in the First Baptist Church parking lot. The Murphree Cemetery is located on the north side of College Street directly across the road from the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Troy, and next to the Family Life Center. The cemetery was copied by Kate Murphree Copeland in 1953; recorded in Papers of the Pike County Historical Society Vol. 2, No. 6, pages 31-33, on April 1962; and photographed by John Phil McLaney, Jr. in October 2010. [The above photo was taken from the front steps of the First Baptist Church of Troy.] There are 50 graves; first known interment was Matilda Almira Murphree (1844-1853) and the last known interment was Elizabeth Howell Murphree (1853 1922); The family names Colson, Corley, Goldthwaite, Jones, Love, Moseley, Scarbrough, Trammell, and Wiley are also found here. The cemetery is surrounded by a cast iron fence which has been painted green. Almost all markers in the cemetery are of white marble. Markers are flush stones unless otherwise indicated. Murphree Monument James Strother Murphree founder of the Murphree family in Troy was the son of James and Sarah Strother Murphree of Louisburg, Franklin County, North Carolina. He was born Aug. 1 st, 1796. At 21 years of age he moved to Carthage, Smith Co., Tenn., where he married Matilda Strother Dyer, Daughter of Joel and Mary Burford Dyer Dec. 20th, 1820. He came to Troy from Commerce, Tenn., in Dec. 1844 and died July 20th, 1856. His wife died June 30th, 1875. Their children were Mary B. Fannin, Sarah A. Love, William M.
