CHAPTER-ASSEMBLY OF THE THREE CANADIAN REDEMPTORIST PROVINCES by Anne Walsh, Lay Missionary of the Most Holy Redeemer There are moments in life when we look back and see that the Holy Spirit was guiding us. There are also moments when we are aware, in the moment, that the Holy Spirit is with us, guiding, inspiring, driving and accompanying us. Such a moment was the joint Assembly-Chapter of the Redemptorist Provinces of Edmonton-Toronto, Ste-Anne-de- Beaupre and Yorkton, that took place at Ste-Anne-de-Beaupré, Quebec during the week of April 10-12, 2018. These three units represent English-speaking Canada, French-speaking Canada and the Ukrainian Catholic Church three languages, three cultures, two Churches. They gathered to explore how they might restructure for mission and, by their unification, bring new energy and a rich diversity of gifts and strengths for the mission of proclaiming the Good News to the most abandoned. At the beginning, each of the three Provincials addressed the assembly, Fr. Larry Kondra, C.Ss.R., of the Yorkton Province (Ukrainian Catholic), spoke about this process as a courageous one. He reminded all present of the need to have faith, that we cannot know all that there is to know at the outset, and must keep a positive outlook, trust in God and work hard to overcome obstacles. Fr. Charles Duval, C.Ss.R. of the Ste-Anne-de-Beaupré Province, spoke about this process as one that should lead to greater availability for mission. Fr. Mark Miller, C.Ss.R., of the Edmonton-Toronto Province talked about the rich diversity that a unified Redemptorist entity in Canada can bring to the mission. He asked three things that people listen respectfully, that all be honest in the open discussions, and that all enter into this process in a spirit of goodwill. The Coordinator of the Redemptorist Conference of North America, Fr. Jack Kingsbury, C.Ss.R., served as facilitator for this joint Assembly-Chapter, and guided the participants as they worked through and refined five proposals (postulata) that would guide them in the initial stages of unification. By the end of the week, in a spirit of goodwill and collaboration, and most definitely under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the decision had been made to form one Redemptorist Province, comprised of three regions, in Canada. Thus united, we may ever more effectively proclaim the Good News to those who most need to hear it in three languages and to many cultures and corners of this vast land. The first Provincial Chapter will take place in January 2019 at Queen of Apostles Renewal Centre in Mississauga, Ontario. We pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to guide the people and the process, as the Spirit has always so faithfully guided us.

May, Moleben, and the Mother of God Mary the Mother of God, our spiritual Mother and Mother of the Church, brings a certain tenderness, compassion, and loving concern which has touched the hearts, souls, and minds of every generation throughout the history of the Church. Her title of "Mother" reveals her unique relationship with her Son and with the Church. In this, she is a wonderful source of inspiration, hope, and courage as we face the many trials and challenges of our Church and society. Although we honour Mary at all times and in all our prayers and church services, May has been chosen as a time to focus on the Mother of God and her place in our salvation. Mary is the greatest of all the saints. Every Divine Liturgy is offered first for our most holy, most pure, most blessed and glorious Lady, the Mother of God and ever-virgin Mary. She was chosen and saved from the beginning of her life because of the unique role she was to play in salvation history. When Mary said yes to bearing the Son of God, she became the first to be saved. Many events of her life provide us with a model of how we should live. We celebrate and venerate the Mother of God because she was the Theotokos (God-bearer). Devotional services have been the Church s response to help us express certain aspects of our relationships with God, Mary or certain saints. First among these services are those that honour the Mother of God. We do not adore her or worship her as we do God, but we venerate her; that is, we show her reverence and honour. One of the devotional services is the Moleben. In general, a moleben is a service of intercession or supplication. The Moleben to the Theotokos is based on the service of matins, as served on a feast day, complete with a Gospel reading in this case, Luke s account of Mary visiting Elizabeth. It also includes the trisagion hymn in honour of the Blessed Trinity, the Our Father, petitions from the faithful and, of course, hymns of praise. This particular moleben is said to have originated at the beginning of the 20 th century in Western Ukraine. Since then it has become beloved by Ukrainian Catholics, who hold a special devotion to the Theotokos. It is commonly used every Wednesday throughout the month of May. The following three short prayers from the Moleben to the Theotokos may give some notion of the beauty of this liturgy. The first is one of repentance, the second a petition for salvation, while the third is a hymn of praise. Let us sinners humbly and diligently have recourse to the Mother of God. Prostate in repentance, let us cry out from the depth of our soul: O Queen, in your compassion, come to our aid! Hasten, for we are perishing from the multitude of our sins. Do not turn away your servants empty-handed, for we have no protection besides you. Rejoice, Mother of Eternal Love, and save all those who place their trust in you. Rejoice, Mary, fragrant flower of incorruption and save all those who place their trust in you. Rejoice, Mary, Advocate who did not abandon us after your dormition, and save all those who place their trust in you. Rejoice, O Virgin most pure! Rejoice, honourable Scepter of Christ the King! Rejoice, you who sprouted the Mystical Vine! Rejoice, Gate of Heaven and Bush unconsumed! Rejoice, Light of the World! Rejoice Salvation of the Faithful! Rejoice, O Queen, Protectress and Refuge of all Christians!
