World Religions and the History of Christianity: Mormonism & Jehovah Witness https://www.mormon.org/beliefs/plan-of-salvation https://www.mormon.org/beliefs/plan-of-salvation Plan of Salvation Plan of Salvation We lived with Heavenly Father before this life as His spirit children, and we came to earth to gain a body and to learn and grow and eventually return to Him. Long before the Creation of this earth, our Heavenly Father provided a plan that made it possible for us, His children, to become like Him. This plan is called the plan of salvation. Understanding this plan gives us greater purpose in life. https://www.mormon.org/beliefs/plan-of-salvation https://www.mormon.org/beliefs/plan-of-salvation Plan of Salvation Plan of Salvation Before this mortal life we lived with God as His spirit children, without physical bodies. We chose the Father s plan, which included the Creation of this earth and provided us the opportunity to come here to gain a body, make choices, develop faith, and accept responsibility for our actions. This allows us to progress beyond what was possible in the spirit world when we lived with God. Sin and death are also part of mortality. The Father sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to provide a way to overcome sin and death. This He did through an act called the Atonement. Through Christ s atoning sacrifice we can repent of our sins and someday live with God and with our families forever. FAMOUS 187 Prince Michael Jackson Serena Williams Dwight D. JW The group now known as the Jehovah's Witnesses was founded in 1879 by Charles Taze Russell, a Pennsylvania businessman. Russell's Adventist background and study of the Bible led him to conclude, among other things, that the second coming of Christ would occur in 1914, that Hellfire did not exist, and God was not a Trinity. Today, there are 6.4 million practicing Jehovah's Witnesses worldwide. JW Witnesses are very active in evangelism and missions, both in the group's original home of the United States and throughout the world. Jehovah's Witnesses adhere to Russell's teachings on Hell and the Trinity and emphasize the immanent End Times, clean and moral living, the equality of all races, and adherence to the teachings of the Bible. JW They reject blood transfusions because of the New Testament command to "abstain from blood" and do not vote or serve in the military. Witnesses reject the symbol of the cross, do not celebrate any traditional Christian holidays, and do not celebrate birthdays. JESUS Jehovah's Witnesses disagree with the mainstream Christian belief that Jesus was "fully God, fully man." Witnesses teach that Jesus was not God, but rather God's first creation. Jesus existed in pre-human form as God's agent of creation and God's chief spokesman (the Word), and took on human form as the man Jesus by means of a virgin birth. JESUS Jehovah s Witness believe in Jesus Christ, but they don t believe He was God in the flesh. They actually believe He was the archangel Michael. They also firmly believe that Jesus already returned in secret in 1917. JESUS The purpose of Jesus' incarnation on earth was threefold in the view of Witnesses: (1) To teach the truth about God; (2) to provide a model of a perfect life for people to follow; and (3) to sacrifice his life to set humans free from sin and death. His crucifixion was not on a cross, but a single upright stake. After his death, God raised Jesus from the dead "as a spirit creature" and Jesus returned to his home in heaven. Jesus was not made King, however, until 1914. 188

SALVATION For Jehovah's Witnesses, the purpose of life is to earn the right to participate in God's future Kingdom on earth, and to help others to do so. Witnesses therefore focus on living a moral, acceptable life before God and witnessing about their faith to others. SALVATION Witnesses believe that salvation was made possible through Christ's death, who made up for the sin of Adam. But eternal life comes not simply from faith in Jesus but from "learning about Jehovah and obeying his requirements," proving oneself to be God's loyal subject, and listening to the Kingdom message and acting on it. https://www.jw.org/en/bible-teachings/questions/what-is-salvation/ What is the way to salvation? To gain salvation, you must exercise faith in Jesus and demonstrate that faith by obeying his commands. Acts 4:10, 12; Romans 10:9, 10; Hebrews 5:9. The Bible shows that you must have works, or acts of obedience, to prove that your faith is alive. (James 2:24, 26) However, this does not mean that you can earn salvation. It is God s gift based on his undeserved kindness, or grace. Ephesians 2:8, 9; King James Version. https://www.jw.org/en/bible-teachings/questions/what-is-salvation/ Can you lose out on salvation? Yes. Just as a person saved from drowning could fall or jump back into the water, a person who has been saved from sin but fails to keep exercising faith could lose out on salvation. For this reason, the Bible urges Christians who have received salvation to put up a hard fight for the faith. (Jude3) It also warns those who have been saved: Keep working out your own salvation with fear and trembling. Philippians 2:12. US / THEM Jehovah's Witnesses consider themselves true Christians, but most mainstream Christians do not agree that they are. The feeling is mutual, however: Jehovah's Witnesses deny that other Christian groups are true Christians. "Christendom" is defined as that part of the world where Christianity prevails. It is largely the Western world with its church systems, which from about the fourth century C.E. became prominent. US / THEM Apart from whatever else might be going on in MORMONISM and JEHOVAH WITNESSES, they are Christian in name ONLY. They reject a grace based GOSPEL AND the full person and work of JESUS CHRIST. 189

NOW WHAT? First, know what you believe. Second, be knowledgeable of what others believe. Third, be gracious. NOW WHAT? Fourth, do not argue about non-essentials. The entire conversation hinges on one thing JESUS. NOW WHAT? Thus, only three things are necessary. They are sinners Jesus is their Savior They must accept Him. WHAT S NEXT? 190
