FOCUS ON THE PROMISES OF GOD The Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost August 12, 2018

SERVICE NOTES FOR THIS SUNDAY The order of service for today is printed in this folder. The hymns are found in Christian Worship (red), Christian Worship Supplement (blue), or are printed in the worship folder. Communion We are celebrating the Lord s Supper today. What is this Sacrament? It is the receiving of Christ s body and blood, together with the bread and wine, for the assurance of the forgiveness of our sins (Mt. 26:17-29; 1 Cor. 11:23-29). It is an expression of unity among us when it comes to the teachings of Jesus (Jn. 8:31,32). If you are visiting with us today, please speak with one of our Pastors about receiving this Sacrament. SERVING IN WORSHIP Preaching Minister Presiding Minister (G) Organists Pastor Peter Schmidt Pastor Russell Schmidt Amy Noon (M), Martha Johnson (G) 2

THE TWELFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST The order of worship for Common Service is also found on p. 15 in the front of the red hymnal. OPENING HYMN Jesus, Jesus, Only Jesus 348 INVOCATION AND OPENING SENTENCES (from Psalm 34) P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. P: I sought the LORD, and he answered me; C: he delivered me from all my fears. P: Those who look to him are radiant; C: Their faces are never covered with shame. P: Let us then go to God, confessing our sins, confident of his grace and mercy. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION P: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. 3

LORD, HAVE MERCY Kyrie P: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. P: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. HYMN OF PRAISE Praise to You and Adoration 470 4

PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. P: Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve. Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 5

THE WORD FIRST LESSON 1 Kings 19:3-8 3 Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, 4 while he himself went a day s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. I have had enough, LORD, he said. Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors. 5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, Get up and eat. 6 He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. 7 The angel of the LORD came back a second time and touched him and said, Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you. 8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. PSALM OF THE DAY Taste and See (Psalm 34) Tom Kendzia Cantor: I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise ever in my mouth, Let my soul glory in the Lord. Refrain Let the lowly hear and be glad, let us glorify his name. Together let us praise God s name. Refrain Glorify the LORD with me, together let us praise his name; From my fears God set me free. Refrain Look to the LORD and shine in the light, let your faces not be ashamed. The LORD hears the cry of the poor. Blessed be the LORD. Refrain 6

SECOND LESSON Hebrews 5:11-6:3 11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. 12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. 6 Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, 2 instruction about cleansing rites, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3 And God permitting, we will do so. VERSE OF THE DAY Hebrews 11:1 P: Alleluia. Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Alleluia. Worship services center around the Gospel Reading; we rise to highlight its function. After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings: GOSPEL LESSON John 6:41-51 41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, I am the bread that came down from heaven. 42 They said, Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, I came down from heaven? 7

43 Stop grumbling among yourselves, Jesus answered. 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: They will all be taught by God. Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. 8

HYMN OF THE DAY Alleluia! Sing to Jesus tune 356 1 Alleluia! Sing to Jesus; His the scepter, his the throne; Alleluia! His the triumph, His the victory alone. Hark! The songs of peaceful Zion Thunder like a mighty flood: Jesus out of ev ry nation Has redeemed us by his blood. 2 Alleluia! Bread of heaven, Here on earth our food, our stay; Alleluia! Here the sinful Flee to you from day to day. Intercessor, Friend of sinners, Earth s Redeemer, hear our plea Where the songs of all the sinless Sweep across the crystal sea. 3 Alleluia! Not as orphans Are we left in sorrow now; Alleluia! He is near us; Faith believes, nor questions how. Though the cloud from sight received him When the forty days were o er, Shall our hearts forget his promise: I am with you evermore? SERMON 1 Kings 19:3-8 When You Are in the Dumps After the sermon, the congregation sings: 9

THANK OFFERING II Corinthians 9:7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: O Lord God, heavenly Father, we praise and glorify you for the unsurpassed gift of your Son, Jesus Christ. We confess that we are unworthy sinners who have transgressed your will and Word. We repent of our evil and pray for the faith that trusts utterly and completely in the righteousness of Christ Jesus for our forgiveness. Open our hearts to the mighty power of your Word. Teach us to depend on your holy sacrament for spiritual strength. Grant that our minds may be renewed in righteousness, that our consciences may be stirred to choose the good, and that every thought, word, and deed may be brought into captivity to Christ. Give to your Church ministers and teachers who have the faithfulness and courage of true prophets, that you people may be built up in faith, abound in good works, rejoice in your love, and finally enter your heavenly kingdom. We pray for our beloved country. Give us citizens who perceive that the standard of all that is right is not personal advancement or private favor, not public opinion or party platform, but your holy will. Lavish your grace on all families, that each home may, by its Christian love and character, be for our children a foretaste of the joy and blessedness of our heavenly home. For all who are in any sickness, pain, anguish, or suffering, for all who are in any danger of body or soul, we pray. Teach them to turn to you and wait on you for mercy. Grant them hope and a joyous deliverance from all their trials, and let them walk in your light all their days. These things we pray in the name of Jesus Christ, our refuge and hope. C: Amen. 10

LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread; Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen. THE SACRAMENT P: The Lord be with you. P: Lift up your hearts. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. P: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who promised that wherever two or three come together in his name, there he is with them to shepherd his flock till he comes again in glory. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song: 11

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY Sanctus THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. 12

O CHRIST, LAMB OF GOD Agnus Dei DISTRIBUTION DISTRIBUTION HYMN Take and Eat 741 (printed on p. 15) SONG OF SIMEON Nunc Dimittis 13

P: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. P: We give thanks, almighty God, that you have refreshed us with this holy supper. We pray that through it you will strengthen our faith in you and increase our love for one another. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. BLESSING P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace.
