INSTITUTE OF CHRIST THE KING SOVEREIGN PRIEST VERITATEM FACIENTES IN CARITATE OLD ST. PATRICK ROMAN CATHOLIC ORATORY 17th Sunday after Pentecost September 7 - September 14, 2008 During the restoration of the Oratory building, all Masses and services will be held at: Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church 2552 Gillham Road Kansas City, MO 64108 Monsignor R. Michael Schmitz, Provincial Superior Father William Avis, Rector 806 Cherry Street Kansas City, MO 64105 w w w. I n s t i t u t e - C h r i s t - K i n g. o r g

Dear Faithful, It is with great joy that I come to Kansas City to be rector of Old Saint Patrick Oratory, to be your priest, to guide you on the way to heaven. Heaven is our final destiny. It also is a great sign of the divine love for mankind that God would call us to such a wonderful future. The sacred Liturgy does much to express this particularly in the holy sacrifice of the Mass which is truly a foretaste of heaven. Soon we will have the benefit of a church building which will be consecrated and dedicated by His Excellency, the most Reverend Robert Finn, our beloved bishop. Holy Church, in her rites of consecration, dedicates a building, the work and effort of many, for the exclusive use of her Liturgy for the greater glory of the one true God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. No longer will it be for the glory of this world, and so our intentions must be purified from all worldly and purely human considerations and desires. As I take up where Father Buchholz has left off, your prayers are greatly needed not only for the successful completion of the church, but also for myself, that I may guide you on the way to heaven as my predecessor Father Buchholz did. The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest is for continuation, our community s point of reference. Tradition means to continue, to hand over, to transmit what we have received from those who have gone before us and, most of all, from Holy Mother Church. We have received the most precious gift that we could ever obtain, the Catholic Faith, through the faithful ministry of the successors of the apostles and their collaborators, the bishops and priests. True to St. Paul's testimony that he has handed down the doctrine and practice he had received, the priests of the Institute of Christ the King desire to do the same. I was sent here to be your priest in order to teach you, to guide you, and to sanctify you. We should never forget that your final destination is the Beatific Vision in heaven. But in order to obtain this goal we must live our Catholic Faith, and as your priest I will assist you that in eternity we will all rejoice with the whole heavenly court before the throne of God. It is my great privilege to be assigned the Rector of Old Saint Patrick Oratory and to serve at the Institute's apostolate here in Kansas City, Missouri. I am looking forward to meeting you, talking with you, and most of all, praying with you. Please be assured of my prayers; I also ask you again to pray for me. Wishing you a grace-filled month of September which is consecrated to Our Lady of Sorrows, I remain, In Christ the King, Father William Avis Rector of Old Saint Patrick Oratory

In his duóbus mandátis univérsa lex pendet, et prophétae." Laus tibi Christe. Offertory: (Daniel 9: 17, 18, 19) Orémus. Orávi Deum meum ego Daniel, dicens: Exáudi, Dómine, preces servi tui: illúmina fáciem tuam super sanctuárium tuum: et propítius inténde pópulum istum, super quem invocátum est nomen tuum, Deus. Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost Introit: (Psalm 118: 137, 124) Thou art just, O Lord, and Thy judgment is right: deal with Thy servant according to Thy mercy. (Ps. 118: 1) Blessed are the undefiled in the way: who walk in the law of the Lord. v. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Repeat Thou art just, O Lord Collect: Grant, we beseech Thee, O Lord, that Thy people may shun all the wiles of the devil: and with pure mind follow Thee, the only God. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, Epistle: (Ephesíans 4:1-6 ) Lesson from the Epistle of Blessed Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians. Brethren, I, a prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that you walk worthy of the vocation in which you are called. With all humility and mildness, with patience, sup-porting one another in charity, careful to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. One body and one spirit, as you are called in one hope of your calling, One Lord, one faith, one baptism. One God and Father of all, and through all, and in us all, who is blessed for ever and ever. Amen. Gradual: (Psalm 32: 12, 16) Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord: the people whom He hath chosen for His inheritance. V. By the word of the Lord the heavens were established and all the power of them by the spirit of His mouth. Alleluia, alleluia. V. (Ps. 101: 2) O Lord, hear my prayer and let my cry come to Thee. Alleluia. Gospel: (Matthew 22: 34-36) At that time the Pharisees came to Jesus, and one of them, a doctor of the law, asked Him, tempting Him: 'Master, which is the great commandment of the law?' Jesus said to him: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. And the second is like to this: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments dependeth the whole law and the prophets:" And the Pharisees being gathered together, Jesus asked them, saying: "What think you of Christ, whose son is He?" They say to Him: 'David's.' He saith to them: "How then doth David, in spirit, call Him Lord, saying: The Lord said to My Lord: Sit on my right hand until I make Thine enemies Thy footstool? If David then call Him Lord, how is He his son?" And no man was able to answer Him a word neither durst any man, from that day forth, ask Him any more questions. Praise be to Christ Offertory: (Daniel 9: 17, 18, 19) Let us pray. I, Daniel, prayed to my God, saying: Hear, O Lord, the prayers of Thy servant; show Thy face upon Thy sanctuary, and favorably look down upon this people upon whom Thy Name is invoked, O God. Secret: We humbly entreat Thy Majesty, O Lord, that these holy Mysteries which we celebrate may set us free both from past and future sins. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God Communion: (Psalm 75: 12, 13) Vow ye, and pray to the Lord your God, all you that round about Him bring presents: to Him who taketh away the spirit of princes: to the terrible with all the kings of the earth. Postcommunion: By Thy sanctifying gifts, O almighty God, may our vices be healed, and may eternal remedies be available unto us. Through the same Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God 3
