PASTORAL MESSAGE A MESSAGE FROM PASTOR RYAN MAXTED It wasn t long ago you may have seen the movie, The Mask in which an insecure, shy, and reserved banker puts on an ancient green mask and is transformed into someone who boisterously exhibits the exactly opposite personality. He becomes confident, outgoing and aggressive. The movie centers on the drama c and comedic tension created by the man wielding both personali es. The simple fact is we all have parts of our personali es which seem less a rac ve. We may not like the part of us which can be overly drama c, bossy, insecure, selfish, impulsive, or calculated. So we try to change or alter what is projected to others by pu ng on a mask. The resul ng effect is we only let people see what we want them to see. It creates a dynamic tension because we desire for people to see and accept us as we really are, but we remain hidden to protect ourselves from hurt and rejec on. We are terrifically afraid that if people were to see us as we really are, they would reject us. Yet, the Bible encourages us to remove our masks. James 5:16a says, Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. This is a picture of self disclosure and transparency where we trust another with our true selves and allow trusted friends to see the real us without any masks. The Bible is teaching us a simple principle: There is love, healing, and acceptance available to us through friendship with other people if we are willing to take a chance, open up, and be vulnerable. There is something spiritual and profound which occurs when we allow ourselves to be seen as we really are. I want to challenge you to consider removing the mask hiding the true you. I m not advoca ng doing this with just anyone. Find a trusted friend with whom you are willing to be vulnerable. Transparency with another person is not something that s comfortable, especially at first, but the rewards of doing so and finding your thoughts, feelings, and ideas accepted are unmatched. And you might even find healing comes through the ministry of friendship which you never suspected or thought possible. If you re interested on reading more about developing healthy, transparent friendships, I encourage you to read the book The Friendship Factor by Alan Loy McGinnis. Tips to try: Start with a conversation about integrity and trust. Transparency is not permission to share private information with anyone else. Transparency ends when trust breaks down. Start small. Don t share too much too quickly but get used to the idea of being open and honest with another person. Take time to give and receive trust. Talk about an area of your personality or life which you have not shared before. Show you trust your friend with the information and ask them to communicate that your information is safe with them. Make certain the Lord has a place in the conversation. Praying with one another and supporting each other through Scripture is essential. Don t give advice, try to fix, or offer correction. Simply accept the information being shared with you as extremely valuable a precious gift. Enjoy the closeness and healing which will come through honest, open conversation.
