WORD CHILDREN S CHOIR All Around the World ANTHEM You Raised Me Up Chancel Choir PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION OLD TESTAMENT READING: 2 Samuel 7:18-29 Mike Hill PSALM READING: Rev. Davina Jones 1 How lovely is your dwelling place, O God of hosts! 2 My soul longs, indeed it faints for the courts of God; my heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God. 3 Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at your altars, O God of hosts, my Ruler and my God. R 4 Happy are those who live in your house, ever singing your praise. 5 Happy are those whose strength is in you
in whose heart are the highways to Zion. 6 As they go through the valley of Baca they make it a place of springs; the early rain also covers it with pools. 7 They go from strength to strength; the God of gods will be seen in Zion. R 8 O Sovereign God of hosts, hear my prayer, give ear, O God of Jacob! 9 Behold our shield, O God; look on the face of your anointed. 10 For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of God than live in the tents of wickedness. 11 For the Sovereign God is a sun and shield; God bestows favor and honor. No good thing does God withhold from those who walk uprightly. 12 O God of hosts, happy is everyone who trusts in you. R EPISTLE READING: 1 Corinthians 3:9-17 Rev. Bill Schroeder * GOSPEL READING: Matthew 7:24-29 Rev. Will Norman SERMON Standing on the Promise, Building on the Rock
* HYMN #544 The Church s One Foundation 1 The church s one foundation is Jesus Christ, her Lord; she is his new creation by water and the Word. From heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride; with his own blood he bought her, and for her life he died. 2 Elect from every nation, yet one o er all the earth, her charter of salvation: one Lord, one faith, one birth; one holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses with every grace endued. 3 Though with a scornful wonder we see her sore oppressed, by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed: yet saints their watch are keeping, their cry goes up, How long? and soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song. 4 Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war, she waits the consummation of peace forevermore, till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest, and the great Church victorious shall be the Church at rest. 5 Yet she on earth hath union with God, the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won: O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we, like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with thee. * AFFIRMATION OF FAITH UCC Statement of Faith Rev. Diane Weible We believe in you, O God, Eternal Spirit, God of our Savior Jesus Christ and our God, and to your deeds we testify: You call the worlds into being, create persons in your own image, and set before each one the ways of life and death. You seek in holy love to save all people from aimlessness and sin. You judge people and nations by your righteous will declared through prophets and apostles. In Jesus Christ, the man of Nazareth, our crucified and risen Savior, you have come to us and shared our common lot, conquering sin and death and reconciling the world to yourself.
You bestow upon us your Holy Spirit, creating and renewing the church of Jesus Christ, binding in covenant faithful people of all ages, tongues, and races. You call us into your church to accept the cost and joy of discipleship, to be your servants in the service of others, to proclaim the gospel to all the world and resist the powers of evil, to share in Christ's baptism and eat at his table, to join him in his passion and victory. You promise to all who trust you forgiveness of sins and fullness of grace, courage in the struggle for justice and peace, your presence in trial and rejoicing, and eternal life in your realm which has no end. Blessing and honor, glory and power be unto you. Amen. THANKSGIVING INVITATION TO THE OFFERING Rev. SENDING * HYMN #507 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God 1 A mighty fortress is our God, 3 And though this world, a bulwark never failing; with devils filled, our helper he, amid the flood should threaten to undo us, of mortal ills prevailing. we will not fear, for God hath willed For still our ancient foe his truth to triumph through us. doth seek to work us woe; The Prince of Darkness grim, his craft and power are great, we tremble not for him; and, armed with cruel hate, his rage we can endure, on earth is not his equal. for lo, his doom is sure; 2 Did we in our own strength confide, one little word shall fell him. our striving would be losing, 4 That word above all earthly powers were not the right man on our side, no thanks to them, abideth; the man of God's own choosing. the Spirit and the gifts are ours Dost ask who that may be? thro him who with us sideth. Christ Jesus, it is he; Let goods and kindred go, Lord Sabaoth his name, this mortal life also; from age to age the same, the body they may kill: and he must win the battle. God's truth abideth still; his kingdom is forever.
