SERMON NOTES By Pastor John Paul Miller David A Man After God s Own Heart Character Studies on the Life of David 2 Samuel 7 - "When God says No" One of the most difficult experiences in life comes about when we realize that a dream or desire is not going to happen. College, job, marriage, children, home, etc As a Christian: Full-time Christian service Pastor. Missionary, etc God closes the door and says NO! You are not a lone, this happened to David too. God s will is always best. God had something better for David it s called the Davidic Covenant We will look at how we should respond when God says no. I. David s Great Passion (2 Samuel 7:1-3) 2 Samuel 7:1-3, And it came to pass, when the king sat in his house, and the LORD had given him rest round about from all his enemies; That the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in an house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains. And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thine heart; for the LORD is with thee. 1. The Context of David s Passion (vs. 1) Finally he is enjoying a time of peace. God knows how to balance our lives domestic & national A time to think slow down you move to fast 2. The Concern of David s Passion (vs. 2) 1

Remember David was a man after God s heart so he wanted to build a house for God. Psalm 132:12-5, A Song of degrees. LORD, remember David, and all his afflictions: How he sware unto the LORD, and vowed unto the mighty God of Jacob; Surely I will not come into the tabernacle of my house, nor go up into my bed; I will not give sleep to mine eyes, or slumber to mine eyelids, Until I find out a place for the LORD, an habitation for the mighty God of Jacob. So David tells Nathan the prophet. 3. The Confirmation of David s Passion (vs. 3) Nathan wasn t telling David it was God s, he was simply encouraging David to go for it! May God give us more Nathan s be an encourager. II. God s Grace Promises (2 Samuel 7:4-17) 2 Samuel 7:4-17, And it came to pass that night, that the word of the LORD came unto Nathan, saying, Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith the LORD, Shalt thou build me an house for me to dwell in? Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle. In all the places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people Israel, saying, Why build ye not me an house of cedar? Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel: And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth. Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as beforetime, And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee an house. And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men: But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee. And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever. According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David. God said No! David must have been disappointed; but disappointments are His appointments. 2

God made David a promise. David wanted to build God a house a temple but God would build David a house a dynasty. The Messiah, the savior of the World would be: 1. A Human Genesis 3:15 2. A Jew Genesis 12:3 3. From the Tribe of Judah Genesis 49:10 4. Born in Bethlehem Micah 5:2 Romans 1:3, Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; The Seed of David 2 Timothy 2:8, Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel: Luke 1:30-33, And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Where is it? A Throne forever (vs. 13 & 16) A Kingdom forever (vs. 16) A House forever (vs. 25 & 29) At the second coming. How would David respond to God s promises and plan? Prayer and Praise, cooperation and humility Key word: Servant III. David s Grateful Prayer (2 Samuel 7:18-29) 2 Samuel 7:18-29, Then went king David in, and sat before the LORD, and he said, Who am I, O Lord GOD? and what is my house, that thou hast brought me hitherto? And this was yet a small thing in thy sight, O Lord GOD; but thou hast spoken also of thy servant's house for a great while to come. And is this the manner of man, O Lord 3

GOD? And what can David say more unto thee? for thou, Lord GOD, knowest thy servant. For thy word's sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all these great things, to make thy servant know them. Wherefore thou art great, O LORD God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears. And what one nation in the earth is like thy people, even like Israel, whom God went to redeem for a people to himself, and to make him a name, and to do for you great things and terrible, for thy land, before thy people, which thou redeemedst to thee from Egypt, from the nations and their gods? For thou hast confirmed to thyself thy people Israel to be a people unto thee for ever: and thou, LORD, art become their God. And now, O LORD God, the word that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant, and concerning his house, establish it for ever, and do as thou hast said. And let thy name be magnified for ever, saying, The LORD of hosts is the God over Israel: and let the house of thy servant David be established before thee. For thou, O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, hast revealed to thy servant, saying, I will build thee an house: therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray this prayer unto thee. And now, O Lord GOD, thou art that God, and thy words be true, and thou hast promised this goodness unto thy servant: Therefore now let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee: for thou, O Lord GOD, hast spoken it: and with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever. 1. David s prayer focused on the present (vs. 18-21) 2. David s prayer looked at the past (vs. 22-24) 3. David s prayer and praise extended into the future (vs. 25-29) What to do when God says no. 1. Remember it s not necessarily discipline or rejection. It may simply be redirection. 2. Reject Introspection God rarely tells us why He told David later (1 Chronicles 22) David s life battling not building 3. Resolve to keep Dreaming 4. Redirect your Energies David helped his son Solomon build the temple. 1. One by one He took them from me, All the things I valued most, Until I was empty-handed; Every glittering toy was lost. 2. And I walked earth s highways, grieving, In my rags and poverty. 4

Lift those empty hands to Me! 3. So I held my hands toward Heaven, And He filled them with a store Of His own transcendent riches Till they could contain no more. 4. And at last I comprehended With my stupid mind and dull, That God COULD not pour His riches Into hands already full! Copyright Calvary Chapel San Bernardino 5
