THE BOOK OF PHILIPPIANS JOY FOR EVERY SITUATION PHILIPPIANS CHAPTER 3:10-11 MEDIA REFERENCE NUMBER SMX-903 AUGUST 7, 2016 THE TITLE OF THE MESSAGE: Part 2 DISCOVERING THE PRESENCE OF GOD AND HIS JOY IN EVERY SITUATION SUBJECT TOPICALLY REFERENCED UNDER: Discipleship, Salvation, Power, Comfort, Growth, Living Introduction to the Text: Philippians 3:10-11 What are you in hot pursuit of in life? 1.) Getting as close as you can vs. 10a 10a that I may know Him 1a.) It means that it is personal vs. 10a 10a that I may 1b.) It means that it is intimate vs. 10a 10a that I may know Him know ginosko, ghin-oce -ko; to know in absolute terms. to know by way of expression, intimacy, to know by the highest form possible. to know with certain familiarity 1

Genesis 4:1 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived knew yada, yaw-dah to know face to face. to behold fully. to see all with full vision. with observation, care, to recognize, to understanding another. (implying the discipline of a blind person - - that we so study, examine, trace with our hands / being - the person(ality) of the other. Psalm 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God; To have found God and still to pursue Him is the soul s paradox of love. A.W. Tozer Ephesians 3:17-19 That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height 19 to KNOW the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness OF GOD. - Getting As Close As You Can 1c.) It means that it is eternal vs. 10a 10a that I may know Him Him grk: autos, ow-tos ; the breath or inhalation or wind. The life and the life-giver. through the idea of an unexplainable wind. respire = to inhale exhale. The world is perishing for lack of the knowledge of God and the Church is famishing for the lack of His Presence. A.W. Tozer 2.) Pressing into this reality vs. 10b and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, This Christian experience is unlike any other because 2

to desire Him, to come near to Him, to have Him - is to begin with Him but where it ends with Him - - no one has yet discovered this side of eternity! Did you catch the order of importance here? #1 Our personal knowledge and possession of His Resurrection power is the first prerequisite or qualifier. #2 Then and only then will we be able to face the suffering, the rejection, hardship and scorn from this world because we know Jesus Christ. (Suffering for suffering sake is worthless - suffering because of our association to Jesus is priceless!) Pressing Into This Reality 2a.) That there is the joy of power vs. 10b 10b and the power of His resurrection, Power grk: dunamis, doo -nam-is; a miraculous power. A supernatural ability, overwhelming abundance. We get the Old English meaning of Wonderful from this. A power once not available to mortal man. There is an exhortation here; we ve been looking for the wrong kind of power. Why is this so important to the believer? How does God bestow to us this power? Why am I not seeing it in use in my life? This power of God s is completely different both in definition and in action. God deals in the realm of supernatural power, unlimited transcendent Power. 3

NOT THE POWER TO DESTROY (That is satanic power. That is human power) It s the Power to Change, Transform, Recreate, Resurrect. TO CHANGE - THIS IS THE POWER OF GOD. Think of Abusive Power = It s Devilish Think of Transformative Power = It s Divine This is the Power that Convinced Paul. 2 Timothy 1:12b For I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day. Can I be blunt - to the point? There are many Christians who think they re going to heaven simply because they don't want to go to hell, but they have fooled themselves. There is no Real Christianity in them. They have no real hatred of their own sins. They have no real convictions about right or wrong (feelings). They have no real burden in their soul for eternal things. They have no real fear of evil and deception and those promoters. They have no real anticipation about meeting Jesus Christ head on.!!!i am persuaded of better things concerning you CCCH!!! Romans 8:10-11 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. Resurrection grk: anastasis; to come to life again, to stand up again. to come back from the world of the dead. (in the art and literature of the ancient greeks, they would communicate / portray the dead to be always laying down and those to be alive, as always standing up. 4

But what does The power of His resurrection mean to us? It means that my old life and nature died with Jesus at the Cross. The power of my human passions, desires, lusts = my carnality was positionally destroyed by Jesus death and resurrection. When Jesus died, He died to pay for my sins debt and penalty and that is truly amazing, but there s something even better than that Jesus rose again from the dead and when that happened, He instantly secured my justification, my forgiveness, my acceptance. All of that and more was made possible for me. Pressing Into This Reality 2b.) That there is the joy of union vs. 10b 10b and the fellowship of His sufferings, There is a reality that cannot be known except through suffering. This is one of the reasons why the testimony of a survivor is so powerful and meaningful, it s because they have lived to tell about it. Paul is saying that When I suffer for being a Christian, I wanna suffer like Jesus did. The way Jesus endured suffering led to the salvation of the world so I want to suffer like that and with the same results. Fellowship grk: koinonia, koy-nohn-ee -ah; communion, partnership, participation, the closest form of social intercourse possible. Suffering(s) grk: pathema, path -ay-mah; (Christ related) hardships or pain. Emotional, physical, or by negative influence, by external attacks and afflictions. 1 Peter 4:12-13 Dear friends, don t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you. 13 Instead, be very glad for these trials make you partners with Christ in his suffering, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world. 5

Here s a great example of Peter s exhortation Acts 14:22 NIV strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God, What are you in hot pursuit of in life? 3.) Becoming who He is in you vs. 10c-11 being conformed to His death, 11 if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. Becoming Who He is in You 3a.) Wanting His sanctification in me vs. 10c 10c being conformed to His death In the Original Greek language here; The (present tense participle) indicates a A Continuous, Progressive, Movement Meaning that - there is a daily, non-stop nudging of the Holy Spirit within the Believer to become more like Jesus in life and in death. Being grk: pleroo, play-ro -o; to be making replete, to level up or top-off, to keep going. Conformed grk: summorphoo, soom-mor-fo -o; to render like, to integrate, to assimilate, to homogenize make into the same. {I pray this word to you is refreshing:} Every true believer in God recognizes that they are both a child of God, in truth and intercourse while at the same time they are painfully aware that they are in a state of disgust as they live out their lives here on earth. - Jack Hibbs 6

Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ; (selah) it is no longer I who live, (selah) but Christ lives in me; (selah) and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, (selah) who loved me and gave Himself for me. Listen, This is Essential to the Believer. Everything that is being said here is totally impossible inside the realm of human physics - But God is not bound by human physics. Humanly speaking, According to my knowledge - - I have never been crucified, but the moment I trust God at His word, these temporary realities are replaced with the eternal reality. What s The Result of Positionally Dying with Jesus, a profound, supernatural, unearthly, transaction. 2 Corinthians 5:17-18, 21 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is (present tense) a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new (present tense) 21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. Matthew 16:24-25 Then Jesus said to His disciples, If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny (disavow) himself, and take up his cross, (to walk the death march of the condemned) and follow Me. 25 For whoever desires to save (preserve, play it safe) his life will lose (surrender it) it, but whoever loses his life (surrenders it) for My sake will find it. (posses it) Matthew Henry To take up one s cross means simply to be willing to pay any price for associating with Jesus Christ. It is the willingness to endure shame, embarrassment, reproach, rejection, persecution, and even martyrdom for His name sake. A day in the life of the Believer There will be Daily Crosses, Daily Death s, Daily Powers, Daily Resurrections. 7

Romans 6:11-12 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 Therefore do not let (stop it because you can) sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. (Choose to disobey.) 1 Corinthians 15:31c I die daily. 2 Corinthians 4:7-11 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. 8 We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed - 10 always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. 11 For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. Becoming Who He is in You 3b.) Wanting His application for me vs. 11 11 if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. Do not misunderstand Paul here. He is not insecure about his salvation. He is not hoping that he makes it to heaven someday. He is saying, I wanna so live and be like Jesus that people will see that I too have died and that I have been risen again in Christ. That people would mistake me for Jesus by my lifestyle. Any means grk: ei pos, i poce; if by any way or by any thing. If by whatever comes I doesn't matter how. Attain grk: katantao, kat-an-tah -o; to meet at or to arrive at. We would better understand the word this way I ll meet you at the station or at the gate Wanting His application for me 8

Romans 6:1-4 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? 3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Are you more deader to this world than last year or are you still keeping something on life-support? I have heard the message of the Cross and of His Resurrection, I have placed my life into that reality. MOVING ON FROM THAT BASIC TRUTH I now desire nothing more but Jesus, more of Jesus. I desire Jesus for His person. Not for His heaven. Not for His blessings, not for His answers to my prayers or comforts Just Jesus! His anastasis = Our exanastasis Resurrection grk: exanastasis, ex-an-as -tas-is; ONLY HERE IN THE N.T. to stand to your feet and be out from. To stand up among those who are laying down. To be (wait for it) out-standing. to be alive, resurrected (out-standing, to step away from those who are still dead (dead as in dead and dead as in sin). It s because of this unique word here that many scholars throughout the centuries see Paul s desire for the Rapture in his lifetime. Out of His resurrection (anastasis) Comes the power for us to resurrect (exanastasis). The Christian is to be, look, speak, live such a life among the dead people of this world that the dead will have seen what Real Life looks like. 1 John 4:17 NIV This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. 9

Judson W. Van DeVenter (1855 1939) All to Jesus I surrender, All to Him I freely give; I will ever love and trust Him, In His presence daily live. Refrain: I surrender all, I surrender all; All to Thee, my blessed Savior, I surrender all. All to Jesus I surrender, Humbly at His feet I bow; Worldly pleasures all forsaken, Take me, Jesus, take me now. All to Jesus I surrender, Make me, Savior, wholly Thine; Let me feel the Holy Spirit, Truly know that Thou art mine. All to Jesus I surrender, Lord, I give myself to Thee; Fill me with Thy love and power, Let Thy blessing fall on me. All to Jesus I surrender, Now I feel the sacred flame; Oh, the joy of full salvation! Glory, glory, to His Name! COME TO CHRIST TODAY End of Study Copyright Sunday, August 7, 2016 by Jack Hibbs 10
