From The Pastor Moving forward in the Spirit It has been 15 months since the publication of Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love), Francis controversial apostolic exhortation; and the dust is still settling. Four cardinals expressed their doubts in writing to the Holy Father. They were concerned that it might create confusion among the laity. Others went so far as to say that it is a break from the traditional teachings of the Church. Most dissenters are still worried about a possible misuse of the apostolic exhortation. The bone of contention was not even in the main text but in footnote 351 where Francis implicitly extends the possibility of receiving absolution in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and permission to receive Communion to remarried Catholics under certain circumstances. He says The confessional should not be a torture chamber but an encounter with the Lord s mercy ; and the Eucharist is not a prize for the perfect, but a powerful medicine and nourishment for the weak. This does not offer any blanket permission but sets down certain conditions among which are: humility, discretion and love for the Church and her teaching, in a sincere search for God s will and a desire to make a more perfect response to it. But the elephant in the Vatican has been released: Communion for the remarried may sometimes be allowed! Francis clearly foresaw the danger that this issue would distract from the greater message of the exhortation but he rightly asserts that it is not a rupture in the Church s teaching. The two Synods on the Family have focused on the crisis of the family and Francis wants to respond to families whose situation does not match what the Church teaches as ideal. Pope Benedict XVI worried about the risk of the Church being too identified with certain commandments or prohibitions so that not even a hint of the true greatness of the faith appears. The response, then, of Francis and the bishops of the Synod was to change the focus of the Church s teaching on marriage from law to virtue. This is the real heart of Amoris Laetitia. Here in chapter four Francis engages in a scriptural and pastoral meditation on Chapter 13 of Paul s First Letter to the Corinthians. The Church s primary way of proclaiming the gospel about marriage is not to issue prohibitions but to point to the virtuous lives of Christians who have lived the marital covenant with fidelity, gentleness, courage and love. The bishops were also concerned about the gap that exists between Church teaching and the actual marital situation of so many in our time. They feared that it could lead to an exclusive Church, and what Cardinal Walter Kasper called a practical (or de-facto) schism. The proposed response is an increase in the Church s pastoral engagement with families and married couples through accompaniment, discernment and integration. As a pastor, it is very liberating to know that we may exercise pastoral discernment filled with merciful love, which is ever ready to understand, forgive, accompany, hope, and above all integrate. Catholics who are in what used to be called irregular situations have been given hope to be in fuller communion with the Church. There are, of course, conditions. As St. John Paul II said in Familiaris Consortio (1981) Pastors are obliged to exercise careful discernment of situations. Nevertheless, while remaining faithful to Church teaching on the indissolubility of marriage, pastors are now empowered to respond to the particularities of situations. Wise discernment is greatly needed in our present situations of complexity, ambiguity and chaos. Family life is chaotic. Therefore, Francis now calls for more discernment. This is not individualism but a call to a greater trust in, and sensitivity to, the promptings of the Holy Spirit. This is not easy! Francis observed: It is like being plunged into the deep and not knowing what we will find. I myself have frequently experienced this. As we move forward into a new more synodal and Spirit-led process we are encouraged to trust because there is no greater freedom than that of allowing oneself to be guided by the Holy Spirit, renouncing the attempt to plan and control everything to the last detail, and instead letting him enlighten, guide and direct us, leading us wherever he wills.
