HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 2, 2016 BELOVED. I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God that you have through the imposition of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self control. So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord, nor of me, a prisoner for his sake, but bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God Guard that rich trust with the help of the Holy Spirit that dwells within us we have done what we were obliged to do. Paul used an image of a fire to be stirred up, as when he first laid hands on Timothy. The same gesture was used the day we were baptized, and we too are to stir up that flame, that ardor as a disciple of the Lord. Remember the devastating forest fires last spring in Alberta, Canada? An entire town eaten up by violent, relentless flame. While fire in California came into our homes as we watched the evening news. We can almost hear the crackling flames and smell the burning trees. The fire has power to kill, as we sadly see on television, when homes are destroyed. But the flame of faith gives life and cannot be extinguished. Fire can give warmth and stimulate life. The fire of the Holy Spirit becomes the driving force for us to live as His witnesses. We are to guard what was entrusted to us, but not as a dog protecting his bone, but as a disciple on fire to bring Christ s warmth and love to the world. Did He not tell us He came to cast fire on the earth? CHURCH OF ST. DENIS Reverend William J. P. Lago, Pastor Rev. Michael J. Lynch, Parochial Vicar Rev. Joseph Miele, Weekend Assistant Mr. George R. Enjoy Mass, volleyball and a vocation talk on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 5:15 pm at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in Allentown, NJ. As we enter this new month with the Feast of St. Therese of Liseux on October 1st, I want to write a great big thank you to all who volunteered for the play, Therese: Story of a Soul on September 21 st. It was quite an exceptional experience to see the actress deliver a great performance right here in our parish, and we could not have had this happen without the volunteers. For me, the high point of the evening was the great declaration of St. Therese: O Jesus, my love, at last I have found my vocation: my vocation is love. Certainly I have found my place in the Church, and you gave me that very place, my God. In the heart of the Church, my mother, I will be love, and thus I will be all things, as my desire finds its direction. October is Respect Life Month. I ask that you read the information that will be in the bulletin throughout the month and take the information available in both the church and chapel. We all need to learn more about the Church s teachings and outreach on behalf of the most vulnerable of our society. As you leave St. Denis Church and go down the stairs on the left, you will see a monument for the unborn that we will bless after 11:00 am Mass on 16 October. I ask you to save the date for that event. Thank you to all who have contributed to the Annual Catholic Appeal. Our parish has exceeded our goal. Because of you, the Diocese is able to continue all the good works that the Annual Appeal supports. In addition, the parish will receive a rebate check because we have achieved 115% of our goal. Thank you again. Lastly, many people ask about the future of our school building. Some people even ask if I am selling it! You may be unaware, but we use the school 4 days a week for over 600 students in our Religious Education Program. We also use the school for parish meetings, and this will continue as our parish grows. For instance, this past Monday evening we had four simultaneous meetings. For this to occur, we use the church, the rectory, and the school. Perhaps people got this idea because the parish still rents the gym to the Borough of Manasquan Recreation Department. We are in the second year of this rental agreement and we receive money that positively impacts the economy of our parish whilst providing a great resource and outreach to the Borough of Manasquan. We greatly need our school building for our present and future needs. I am thankful we have such a great resource. For the Love of God Sing Come, Praise our Lord with Contemporary Christian Music. Back by popular demand, on October 7th we will gather in the BEACH CHAPEL. All are welcome! 30 minutes of prerecorded music Lyric sheets provided Every First Friday of the month at 7:00 pm For more information, Contact Allison Penkethman, 732.528.4976

Anyone is welcome anytime throughout the year. Books are provided. Please continue to pray for all those suffering from addiction! Thank you! VINCENT DE PAUL In today s Gospel Jesus tells his disciples, When you have done all you have been commanded, say: We are unprofitable servants; we have only done what we were obliged to do. This week, please help the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to bring the love and mercy of Jesus to those who feel left out and abandoned, for indeed we are only doing what we are obliged to do. We would like to share with all of our generous parishioners another thank you from a neighbor in need. This is a few months behind. I have been in the hospital and my daughter has had issues at her group home, so I got tied up, but I thank you so very much for helping me out and sitting with all of you for prayers. I appreciate it so very much, your kindness and caring. May God Bless all of you! Thank you again. We will have refreshments and a chance to celebrate all that is going on here at St. Denis, and ask for St. Denis' intercession for new initiatives that will begin this year. In preparation for our Feast Day, I ask that each parishioner pray the novena to St. Denis. Please take the time after the Masses next week to see how you can serve at your parish and let us pray for one another and for Fr. Michael in his time of transition, and for all who live within the boundary of our parish. Prayer in Honor of Saint Denis O God, who did confer your saving faith on the people of France through the holy Bishop and Martyr Denis, and did glorify him before and after his death by many miracles; grant us, through his intercession, that the Faith practiced and preached by him be our light on the way of life, so that we may be preserved from all anxieties of conscience, and if by human frailty we have sinned, we may return to You speedily by true Confession and penance. Through Christ our Lord. Amen Novena Glorious servant of God, St. Denis, with intense love you devoted yourself to Christ after learning to know Him through the Apostle St. Paul, and did preach His saving Name to the nations and did not shrink from Martyrdom; implore for us God's Blessings for these our intentions (mention intentions). Through your help, St. Denis, may we have continual growth in the knowledge and love of Jesus, so that we may experience that peace which He alone can give. Help our parish, by your powerful intercession, to serve God with willing hearts, and show God's Love and Mercy to all we meet, so to give God glory and attain the eternal bliss of Heaven. Amen. The inspirational quote comes from Pope Francis: We are called to show mercy because mercy has first been shown to us. This year we are called to Respect Life through the lens of Mercy. We respect life as an aspect of mercy. First, we realize that God has shown us mercy by giving us our life. We were given being by the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of Life. We were made in the image and likeness of God and not aborted. God has shown us mercy indeed. Therefore, we should be moved by mercy and act through the spiritual and corporal works of mercy on behalf of the right to life of each person. No one should be made to feel that it would be better if they did not exist. (In 2015, 48% of those who died under Oregon s assisted suicide law cited being a burden on family, friends, or caregivers as a reason for their suicide. If only they were shown mercy to not feel that way.) As we reflect on the theme, Moved by Mercy, may God inspire us to be agents of mercy. As an old Irish proverb says, It is in the shelter of each other that people live. Indeed, we are created to depend on one another and walk together in the joys and sorrows of life, with faith, hope and love. ENSPIRITED PROJECTS NEW OPPORTUNITY FOR KIDS!
