Northside Charter High School Weekly Global History Homework Packet HW #13 Due before class starts on Friday, December 20th, 2013. CE Name: Date: Period: EMPRESS WU E v e n t h o u g h a c c o r d i n g t o t h e Confucian beliefs having a woman rule would be as unnatural as having a "hen crow like a rooster at daybreak," during the most glorious years of the Tang dynasty a woman did rule, and ruled successfully. She was Wu Zetian, the only female in Chinese history to rule as emperor. To some she was an autocrat, ruthless in her desire to gain and keep power. To others she, as a woman doing a "man's job," merely did what she had to do, and acted no differently than most male emperors of her day. They also note that she managed to effectively rule China during one of its more peaceful and culturally diverse periods. GLOBAL HISTORY REMINDERS - HOMEWORK PACKET #13 DUE 12/20/13 CE Upcoming topic - HOW TO COMPLETE A DBQ ESSAY In order to challenge Confucian beliefs against rule by women, Wu began a campaign to elevate the position of w o m e n. S h e h a d s c h o l a r s w r i t e biographies of famous women, and raised the position of her mother's clan by giving her relatives high political posts. She moved her court away from the seat of traditional male power and tried to establish a new dynasty. She said that the ideal ruler was one who ruled like a mother does over her children.

REGENTS PREP QUESTIONS

DBQ: ASOKA "There is no gift comparable to the gift of Dharma [righteousness, or correct behavior], and this is: good behavior towards slaves and servants, obedience to parents, generosity towards friends, acquaintances, and relatives... and abstention [staying away] from killing living beings."it is good to be obedient to one's mother and father, friends, and relatives. It is good not only to spend little, but to own the minimum of property." According to Asoka, how should people behave? "My officers have been appointed for the welfare [safety] and happiness of the...people. I have given them... authority in judgment and punishment. But it is desirable that there should be uniformity [sameness] in judicial [trial] procedure and punishment." "This... has been engraved so that the officials of the city should always see to it that no one is ever imprisoned or tortured without good cause. To ensure this I shall send out every five years on a tour of inspection officers who are not fierce or harsh." According to Asoka, how should his government officers behave towards Asoka s people? "On the roads...trees have been planted for the enjoyment of animals and men. I have had ponds dug and shelters erected along the roads. Everywhere I have had wells dug." "Everywhere, I, Ashoka, King Priyadarsi, Beloved of the Gods, have arranged for two kinds of medical treatment: medical treatment for men and medical treatment for animals." How do Asoka s edicts reflect the Buddhist principle of respecting all life?

REGENTS PREP: MAURYA AND GUPTA EMPIRE

"Whoever honors his own [religion] and disparages another man's whether from blind loyalty or with the intention of showing his own [religion] in a favorable light, does his own [religion] the greatest possible harm. Concord is best, with each hearing and respecting the other's teachings. It is the wish of the [king] that members of all religions should be learned and should teach virtue." From the Edicts of Asoka (268 B.C.) What did the Mauryan ruler, Asoka, say about religious tolerance? How did the Mauryan government differ than the Gupta empire? What contributions were made in math and science during the Gupta Empire?
