SPECIAL MESSAGE Dear Friends, As most of you know by now, at the beginning of this year, my family and I made the decision to return to Austria so that I could complete my 2nd (and final) year as a student of the Licentiate in Sacred Theology (STL) program at the International Theological Institute (ITI) in Trumau, Austria. This university is a Pontifical University, specializing in the theology of St. Thomas Aquinas, and the theology of marriage. As a Pontifical University, it issues its degrees in the name and authority of the Holy See, and in addition to its lay students, directly prepares many men (especially those of the Byzantine Rite) for ordination to the priesthood. It is a University that is steeped in the faithful, theological traditions of the Church, and I highly encourage you to look into it as a possible option for your children, or even for yourself! Now that I have done my duty to help promote the ITI as requested by the Rector of the ITI let me express to ALL of you just what these last two years at The Proto-Cathedral have meant to me and my family. In addition to our two older boys, Michael and Dominic, my wife, Melissa, was approximately six months pregnant with our twin boys, Nicholas and Patrick, when we arrived in Vancouver from Austria. After only knowing us for about two months, immediately after the twins were born in September, we were pleasantly and most-gratefully bombarded with an amazing train of meals sent our way by people of our parish (whom we barely knew), which lasted about two weeks postpartum. This immediately brought to the forefront the kind of people we would be sharing our Catholic lives with here, and who very quickly we would consider true friends of ours! My relatively short time here has been met with a myriad of amazingly kind gifts, lunches, letters, notes, and personal comments, which have reflected your appreciation for me, in whatever act of mine you were grateful for. But I must say, if anyone should be grateful here, it is ME. Because of YOU those of you who witness Christ in your everyday lives have I come to an even deeper hope for the Church, and have seen ever-bright images and lights of what I should be as a husband, a father, a brother, a son, and most importantly, as an adopted son of God. Words cannot express how rewarding it has been for me to have been gifted with the opportunity to help all of you in the work of this parish, and I especially thank Fr. Harris, who was obviously instrumental in giving me this opportunity to SERVE YOU. My goal here was always to bring you a great variety of courses and programs that were, above all, FAITHFUL to the Magisterium of the Church, and that CHALLENGED you and offered you new ways to understand WHY the Church teaches what she does, all with the overarching goal of helping you BECOME SAINTS. I hope I have been faithful to that mission. You will soon be meeting my successor, Mr. Alex Harb. He is a former classmate of mine, and a good friend. In addition to his excellent education, he has the outgoing personality that I will never have. You are indeed in good hands with him. On the following page, you will find all the contact information you need in order for you to keep in touch with us, and we sincerely want you to! We do hope God allows us to come back to the Northwest, assuming I can land a good teaching opportunity here someday. Pray for this, and please pray for the journey my family and I are about to embark on, as I work towards the completion of a doctoral degree in theology. We truly wish all of you an abundance of God s blessings! Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6) In Christ through Mary, Andrew 3

Pope says abortion of sick, disabled children reflects Nazi mentality Vatican City, June 16 2018, CNA/EWTN News In a speech to a family association Saturday, Pope Francis again stressed that God's vision of the family is between a man and a woman, and compared the abortion of children who are sick or disabled to a Nazi mentality. I've heard that it's fashionable, or at least usual, that when in the first few months of pregnancy they do studies to see if the child is healthy or has something, the first offer is: let's send it away, the pope said June 16, referring to the trend of aborting sick or disabled children. This, he said, is the murder of children...to get a peaceful life an innocent [person] is sent away...we do the same as the Nazis to maintain the purity of the race, but with white gloves. It's an atrocity but we do the same thing, he said, according to Italian media. Pope Francis spoke to members of the Forum of Family Associations, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. His words on abortion come just days after his home country of Argentina voted June 14 in favor of a bill that would legalize abortion as early as the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.
