Mission Statement: St. Francis of Assisi Parish is a Christ-centered family of believers, celebrating Christ alive in our lives through the inspiration of the Gospel, church teachings and traditions and the Sacraments. We are sensitive to the spiritual and temporal needs of God s people, acknowledging their uniqueness and dignity and are dedicated to reaching out and serving them through prayer, liturgical celebrations and social ministries. Guided by the Holy Spirit and nourished by the Holy Eucharist, we welcome all people with, respect and compassion. We are vigilant in protecting the rights of the most vulnerable. In the tradition of our patron, St. Francis of Assisi, we put the good news of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ into action. July 22, 2018 4 Pastor s Desk This afternoon, we host our Annual Parish Picnic on the side lawn and parking lot. I sincerely hope to see lots of parishioners whom we know call old friends show up with children and grandchildren. The picnic is just our speed - everyone on the committee is eager to see good results. They have put themselves out on behalf of the parish and more than deserve our support. Hats off in a very special way to Ron Farmer who graciously accepted the chairperson role and with a steady hand has guided our energetic team to the finish line. Again, we host the picnic as a fundraiser. These are difficult days for many parishes on Long Island, our ordinary income is not sufficient; we either raise some additional funds or we have to engage in painful cut backs! Again, thank you for supporting the picnic. Take some chances; buy some tickets and be ready for a great afternoon. Everyone speaks of community building - it s a good word and a valid concept - if a little luke warm and impersonal. What we mean is we are already believers and parishioners and now we have another chance at becoming friends. Time, Talent & Treasure Fostering Stewardship as a way of life Thanks for Giving First Fruits & Taking a Step!!! (Regular Sunday Offertory) July 1st s weekly offering: $8,150.00 July 8th s weekly offering: $8,8924.00 Last year s weekly offering: $8,394.00 Bulletin Reflection The hand of the Lord feeds us, says the Psalmist, he answers all our needs. Both Elisha s servant in the first reading and the disciples in the Gospel story who witnessed the feeding of the five thousand saw this happen and knew it to be true. Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who feed the hungry through efforts such as St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, Long Island Cares, Harry Chapin Food Bank and our own Parish Outreach Pantry! July 29-Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time: In the Gospel, Jesus supersedes both the apostles and the crowds expectations: with little he feeds many Jesus is the sign of God s lavish presence and love. Your donation to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is indeed a sign of God s extravagant love to the lonely and the poor. This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to assist families by providing food and money for utility, rent and other bills. God Bless You! SUNDAY READINGS for next week, July 29th: For thus says the Lord: You will eat and have some le over. Ephesians 4:1 6I, then, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live with all humility and gentleness. John 6:1 15Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining. Send us your email if you would like to start receiving Bringing Home the Word, a weekly message based on the Sunday Scripture readings.
