The Epiphany of the Lord Page 3 Greetings and happy new year! Please allow me to introduce myself. I am Fr. Mike Brown, whom Bishop Thomas has appointed as parochial administrator of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish from this week until the first of July. Ordained a priest of the diocese in 1974, I went into senior status in 2014, although I have found that I ve been doing so much filling in for my brother-priests in this diocese (and sometimes beyond) that I ve discovered that retirement is a rather misleading word. Some of you may have had the same experience. Even my coming to the Our Lady of Lourdes will be affected by continuing commitments I need to keep to some other parishes and institutions, three of which are rather prominent on my calendar substituting for Fr. Mike Dandurand at Holy Trinity Parish in Assumption whenever he has Guard Weekends with the local Air National Guard; being one of the priests who rotate celebrating Mass with the older Notre Dame Sisters at Lial; and serving as Catholic chaplain two to four days a month at Mercy St. Vincent Hospital. My ability to serve for a while at OLL should work smoothly thanks to several things, including the fact that Frs. Joe Newman, OSFS, and Alan Zobler, OSFS, will continue to share with me the joy of celebrating weekend Masses with you throughout the year. Also, the parish staff and Deacon Gary have a remarkable history of service to the community. And then there is your own reputation as a parish doing everything an active parish should be doing, in such divers areas as outreach to the needy and carefully erecting a beautiful new worship space. If you re interested in my background, after graduating from Port Clinton High School and then John Carroll University, I went off to St. Meinrad in Indiana to study theology; after ordination I had my first assignments as an associate pastor, first at Our Lady of Perpetual Help and then at Little Flower Parish here in Toledo, before being sent to Calvert High School in Tiffin. Then, in 1982, I became a chaplain in the U.S. Navy, serving with the Navy and Marine Corps for 16 years until the Navy, while downsizing, offered me an early opportunity to return to Ohio and get back to diocesan ministry. I loved my time with Sailors and Marines, but after a brief stint at St. Peter s, Mansfield, awaiting a regular assignment, I became the pastor, first at Christ the King Parish and then at St. Clement Parish in Toledo. For six years I also did some part-time teaching at St. Francis de Sales High School, putting to good use, I hope, even more of the graduate-school education that either the diocese or the Navy allowed me to obtain. So, besides my sea stories you may also notice that I have fond memories of my studies at the University of Notre Dame. Right now, however, I m looking forward to spending a good part of the next six months with all of you. With your help and support, this will be a fruitful time for us all as we seek to live the Gospel of Christ in this corner of God s vineyard. Fr. Mike Brown B I B L E S T U D Y Catholicism The Pivotal Players Please join us as we begin our second series on some of the key people who helped to shape the life of the Church, and to change the course of Western Civilization. We will be using Bishop Robert Barron s DVD series Catholicism The Pivotal Players as we study the lives of Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman, the Convert; G.K. Chesterton, the Evangelist; and Michelangelo, the Artist. We will get an insight into how their lives and contributions to the Church were a reflection of their faith, and their understanding and application of the Scriptures. We will meet on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 pm in the Lourdes Room starting January 16th. and continuing on Jan. 23, Feb. 6, 13, 20 & 27. Please bring your Bible and CCC (Catechism of the Catholic Church) if you have one. If you did not attend the fall sessions, you are still WELCOME! Please contact Lisa at 419-865-2345 or Deacon Gary at 419-740-2296 to let us know that you will be attending, so we can have copies of each week s lesson for you. Hope to see you there!

To help make Baptism a truly meaningful ceremony, parents are asked to attend a Baptismal Preparation Class. This can be done before the birth of the baby. It is important for parents to understand the Sacrament, the ceremony, and the responsibilities that follow. The next Baptismal Prep Session will be February 5th at 7:00 p.m. in the Lourdes Room. To register for the class or to schedule a Baptism, call the Parish Office at 419-865-2345. All parents must take a class before their child is baptized.
