Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church 315 Winchester Road Huntsville, AL 35811 Volume 14, Issue 3 March 2017 Speaking the Truth in Love...but speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head - Christ Ephesians 4:15 The Herald is a monthly publication of Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. Members are encouraged to submit all newsworthy articles by the 20th of the month to newsletter@unionchapel-hsv.org. All articles are subject to editing for clarity and grammatical correctness.

From the Pastor s Pen How to Make it Day by Day I want to share with you a few things that have blessed my life. So many people today are finding it hard to live day by day. Put another way, they can hardly make it through the day. What I m about to share will be a blessing to you in this struggle. Finally, each day we should make up our minds to press forward. Sometimes we may not know why we struggle each day. But we must go forward no matter what. We must learn to say, along with Paul, this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:13-14). As we face each day, my prayer is for each of you to keep low, look up and press forward. First, make up your mind to keep low each day. What I mean by this is that one must live a humble life. Never think more of yourself than you should. We should think good of ourselves, but this should only be done in the context of who we are in the Lord. To keep low means that we should be humble. Next, we should look up. Every day of our lives should be spent looking up to the Lord. When we look to Christ, we find the strength to make it through the day. When we look to Him we find power to live. Save the Date All members are invited to attend a Retirement Celebration honoring Dr. Richard Showers, Sr. for 28 years of continuous service to the residents of District 1 and the City of Huntsville Friday, March 24, 2017 6:30 p.m. Boone-Lacy Fellowship Hall Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church Please sign-up at the Welcome Center 2

The first of our second chances, Romans 3:10-18. His grace is so extensive that He offers countless opportunities to hear the gospel and receive His Son Jesus Christ as Savior. What s more, He reaches into the muck of mankind s sinful nature, rebellious spirit, perversity, and unclean language in order to save His beloved creation. If you think that the Lord takes second chances lightly, read the passage carefully; it is a look at humanity through divine eyes. On our own, no matter how much we try to be good, we are foolish, useless, and evil. Thankfully, God s grace is immeasurably greater than our sin. Of course, the heavenly Father is a righteous judge who cannot ignore transgressions. If He did, He would not be the holy and just deity described in the Scriptures. While humanity might count passivity as kindness, the Lord considers grace an action word. As a result, He implemented a simple rescue plan for each Wisdom to Live By person on earth: Whoever believes in Jesus Christ as Savior is forgiven. We are justified by faith and at peace with God (Romans 5:1). The rebellious war we carried out against Him is over. Sins are washed off our heart. In fact, from God s perspective, His children look as if they have never done wrong. Jesus is our second chance. Apart from Him, there is no salvation, no justification, and no grace. According to Romans 3, it s not possible to clean up one s own heart - each man or woman must take advantage of the purity Christ purchased with His sacrifice on the cross. ~Dr. Charles Stanley Wellness News Go green: Dark, leafy veggies like spinach may boost your brainpower. Popeye had it right, as did your mom, grandma, and anyone else who advised you to eat your greens. The benefits of dark, leafy green vegetables like spinach and Swiss chard are legion. Lowering inflammation and oxidative stress are at the top of the benefits list, which may help to explain why those who eat plenty of greens and other veggies have a lower risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and some types of cancer. And a new study links consumption of a phytochemical called lutein, found in abundance in greens, to what s known as crystallized intelligence. If your woo-woo meter just went ping!, rest assured that this has nothing to do with crystals, chakras, or flower power. Crystallized intelligence is a measure of your ability to use the skills and knowledge you ve gained over a lifetime. The study only showed an association, not cause and effect, but lutein is known to build up in brain-cell membranes, and previous research suggests it improves brain function. So make 2017 your greenest year yet! Scrambled egg whites or tempeh with greens makes a delicious, nutritious breakfast. At dinnertime, sauté spinach, Swiss chard, or kale with a little olive oil and some fresh garlic, plus a squeeze of lemon. Your taste buds, body, and brain will give it a green light! ~Cleveland Clinic Wellness 4

A good leader is a peacemaker. Proverbs 16:7 says, When a man's ways please the Lord, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him. Yet so many leaders aren t interested in examining an opposing viewpoint or other ideas. We ve lost the ability to empathize with others, and compromise has become a bad word. There s something to be said of sticking to principles. I believe God calls us to be steadfast. He doesn t, however, call us to be jerks. And, when our boldness is interpreted as coldness, we are not doing it right. ~Brent Rinehart (Crosswalk.com) Just a Thought... 7
