Grades K5-2 nd - Week 5 Need to Know: I Can (point to self) Keep My Word! (point to mouth) Bible Story: David Treats Saul Kindly 1 Samuel 24:1-22 Tell the kids that during this lesson series we are going to learn how Jesus wants us to use our words! To get started, let s all share our names and our favorite kind of candy! All of that candy sounds awesome! If I promised to give each of you a piece of candy right now, would you expect me to keep my word? (Yes) When we promise something, we need to do it because we said we would. It s important for us to keep our word! That s what we need to know today! I Can (point to self) Keep My Word! (point to mouth) GIVE each child a piece of small candy and show them that you kept your word! READ the Bible Story Picture Cards aloud to the kids, making sure everyone can see. After the story, ASK: 1. What was Saul doing to David: chasing him and trying to kill him OR taking him to look for penguins? (Chasing him and trying to kill him) 2. What did David promise God: that he would make sweet tea or that he would not hurt Saul? (That he wouldn t hurt Saul) 3. Is it easy to keep our word when people are mean to us? (No) Did David keep his word? (Yes, he didn t hurt Saul even though Saul was mean) If you say you re going to do something, you should do it because you said you would. If you don t think you can do something, then don t say you ll do it. It s important to keep our word like David did. And that s what we need to know today: I Can (point to self) Keep My Word! (point to mouth) Prayer (you can pray the below prayer or your own prayer) Dear God, thank you always keeping your word to us. Please help us to keep our word when we promise to do something. Help us say no when we know we can t do something. We love you! Amen. MEMORY VERSE: Say several times, while kids repeat after you. Let my words and my thoughts be pleasing to you, God. Psalm 19:14

Application Activity (do this activity together with the older kids) Materials: Word Cards, Beanbag, Small Candy 1. Divide kids into two teams. Place Word Cards in the middle of the circle facedown. 2. Give one team a beanbag. Allow a child from that team to toss the beanbag onto one of the Word Cards. 3. The leader ONLY will pick up the card. Each team must promise to DO or NOT DO what is on the card before they know what it says. (Give teams a few seconds to talk about it the whole team must agree) 4. Once teams have decided what to do, read the Word Card that was chosen aloud to the group. Kids will keep their word by either doing what the card says or not doing what the card says. 5. Repeat steps 2-4, allowing teams to take turns tossing the beanbag. 6. Play until all the cards are used or each child has had a turn. 7. Afterwards, ASK: Was it hard to keep your word and either do or not do what the card said? Let s think of some other times it might be hard to keep your word: If your friend asks you to come to the movies on Saturday, but you already have a birthday party to go to, should you tell your friend that you ll come to the movies? (No, you won t be able to keep your word) Let s say some kids at your school want you to cheat on a test, but you promised God you would live the way He wants you to. What would you do? (Keep your word to live the way God wants you to and NOT cheat on the test) When we decide to follow God, we promise to live the way He wants us to. When we do what He says, we are keeping our word to Him. That s what we need to know today: I Can Keep My Word!

David Treats Saul Kindly 1 Samuel 24:1-22

There was once a king named Saul. Saul and his army were chasing a man named David so they could catch him and kill him. David hadn t done anything wrong though. He followed God and promised to live the way God said to live. Out in the Wild: Arctic Chill Week 5 2 of 10 K-1 st Grade Bible Story Picture Cards

While Saul and his army were chasing David, Saul stepped into a cave to go to the bathroom. The cave was dark, so Saul couldn t see that David was hiding in the cave too! Out in the Wild: Arctic Chill Week 5 4 of 10 K-1 st Grade Bible Story Picture Cards

David s men said, David! This is your chance to hurt Saul so he ll stop chasing you forever! David crawled close to Saul and cut off a piece of Saul s robe. But David didn t do anything else. He said, I must not do anything against Saul, because he is the king that God wants. I promised God I wouldn t hurt Saul. Out in the Wild: Arctic Chill Week 5 6 of 10 K-1 st Grade Bible Story Picture Cards

After Saul left the cave, David called out to him, Saul! I want you to see that I had the chance to hurt you while you were in the cave. But, I know that God doesn t want me to do anything to you. Even though you were mean to me, I kept my word to God and didn t hurt you! Out in the Wild: Arctic Chill Week 5 8 of 10 K-1 st Grade Bible Story Picture Cards

Saul began to cry. He called back to David, You have shown that you will keep your word. I know that God is going to reward you for keeping your word to Him. After that, Saul went back home and stopped chasing David for now. Later, God made David king and rewarded him for keeping his word!
