MINISTRY NEWS SPEAKING OF BOOKS RECCOMENDATIONS BY FR. JOHN Orthodox Christians are blessed to be such a literate faith with an wide array of spiritually fulfilling books. Throughout this year I will be guiding you through some of the books I have found most helpful. These books will be made available through the Saint Sophia bookstore. This series will begin with selections and reflections on The Inner Kingdom by His Eminence Bishop Kallistos Ware. This book explores the wealth of knowledge and practices for the inner spiritual life of the Orthodox Christian. Next we will go through a wonderful book by Anthony M. Coniaris, Making God Real in the Orthodox Christian Home. With this, we will discuss tangible ways of living and practicing the faith at home with your family. PHILOPTOHOS NEWS GO RED FOR WOMEN DAY: National Philoptohos has designated SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 9th as the day to GO RED FOR WOMEN! We hope this will remind you to talk with your doctor about heart disease and take care of yourself. MEMBERSHIP TIME IS HERE! The membership cards and forms are in the mail and we hope you will join Philoptohos! Attend our meetings, join and work on our projects and fundraising efforts. We need your support to continue our outreach efforts to those who need help. Look for the beautiful Philoptohos angel on the membership card. Artist Elain Awad was kind enough to give Philoptohos permission to reproduce her painting for Membership. Thank you Elain! COMMUNION WINE NEEDED The Church exists as a community of individuals coming together and offering their time, talents, and treasures. One of the most sacred gifts to offer the Lord in the Church is the wine for Holy Communion. Saint Sophia Cathedral uses KEO s Commandaria St. John which can be purchased across the street at Papa Cristos Greek market. The Altar is running low on this wine. Wine offerings may be submitted in honor or in memory of your loved ones. Bring the wine and names to Jimmy in the Narthex or to the church office Monday through Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm. 5

JOHN CHRYSOSTOM ORATORICAL FESTIVAL SUNDAY MARCH 2ND Introduced in 1983, the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival provides Greek Orthodox teenagers the opportunity to learn to write and talk about their faith. The Oratorical Festival Program begins at the parish level and is divided into three divisions: Elementary Division (local festival only) for students in grades 4 6 Junior Division for students in grades 7 9 Senior Division for student in grades 10 12 The top speakers in the Junior and Senior Divisions advance to the district level. Two finalists in each district division represent the district at the Metropolis Oratorical Festival. The top speaker in each metropolis division is then selected to participate in the Archdiocese Finals, which is hosted by a different metropolis each year. MINISTRY NEWS JOY OF PARENTING CLASSES Join your fellow parishioners in a lively discussion of parenting children of all ages: from toddlers to teens and beyond. Classes are held in the Work/Study Room in the Huffington Center, upstairs near the left-hand side staircase, immediately following Holy Communion and concluding at 12:15. Come with your concerns and questions or just listen; there is no pressure to speak to the class. It's a wonderful way to get acquainted with other parents. There is no fee to attend. The Joy of Parenting Ministry is facilitated by Barbara Kappos, LCSW and Nikolaos Stefanidis, Ph.D. Mark your calendars for upcoming classes: TODAY, "Showing Love," Feb. 23: "When to Push and When to Hold Back."
