Order of Service 30 April 2017 THE ROAD TO EMMAUS

WELCOME TO KNOX Knox Church is a congregation within the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand. We aim to create Christian community in which people of all ages, sexual orientations, cultural backgrounds and socio-economic situations are included as equally valued participants in our congregational life. We cherish our diversity, offering a safe place of belonging to any who wish to explore their beliefs in an atmosphere promoting discussion, the development of healthy relationships and spiritual growth. We strive to be open to dialogue and shared experiences with people of other faiths. We enjoy worshipping the God made known in Jesus, endeavouring to do so in ways that are relevant to our daily lives, respect the integrity of creation, and make a positive difference to our wider world. A loop system for hearing aids operates at Knox. Toilets are available through the door on the lectern side of the sanctuary. The Call to Worship: We light a candle in the name of Jesus Christ, the Light of the world. JESUS, WHO MEETS US ON THE ROAD AND WALKS BY OUR SIDE; JESUS, WHO OPENS OLD HOPES TO OUR HEARING; JESUS, IN WHOSE COMPANY OUR HEARTS BURN WITHIN US. Kia noho a Ihowa ki a koutou. God be with you. MA IHOWA KOE E MANAAKI. GOD BLESS YOU. Hymn: Kelvingrove Scottish Traditional Tune

1. Will you come and follow me if I but call your name? Will you go where you don t know and never be the same? Will you let my love be shown, will you let my name be known, will you let my life be grown in you and you in me? 2. Will you leave your self behind if I but call your name? Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same? Will you risk the hostile stare should your life attract or scare, will you let me answer prayer in you and you in me? 3. Will you let the blinded see if I but call your name? Will you set the prisoners free and never be the same? Will you kiss the leper clean and do such as this unseen, and admit to what I mean in you and you in me? 4. Will you love the you you hide if I but call your name? Will you quell the fear inside and never be the same? Will you use the faith you ve found to reshape the world around through my sight and touch and sound in you and you in me? 5. Lord, your summons echoes true when you but call my name. Let me turn and follow you and never be the same. In your company I ll go where your love and footsteps show. Thus I ll move and live and grow in you and you in me. John Bell (b. 1949) Prayer of Approach Last week the disciples may have been hiding behind their closed doors in Jerusalem, PROCESSING ALL MANNER OF MYSTERY IN THE CITY. At the same time, others in the Jesus family spent that self-same day leaving the scene, going back home. LET S GO BACK TO BEFORE IT BEGAN. LET S GO BACK TO BEFORE HOPE HAD SHONE WITHIN US. Yet on the road, someone joined us. HE ASKED US QUESTIONS. HE TOLD US STORIES.

Beginning with Moses, he explained the story of the One we d come to see. He broke bread with us. OUR EYES WERE OPENED, OUR HEARTS BURNED WITHIN US; WE KNEW THAT CHRIST WAS RISEN. He turned our sad journey into a brave new adventure. WILL YOU COME AND FOLLOW ME IF I BUT CALL YOUR NAME? WILL YOU GO WHERE YOU DON T KNOW AND NEVER BE THE SAME? So now, many years later, we new bearers of the Easter story find ourselves walking our own road away from mystery and resurrection. WILL YOU JOIN US IN OUR WALKING? WILL YOU SPEAK TO OUR FRIGHTENED HEARTS? WILL YOU OPEN TO OUR EYES THE WONDER OF YOUR PRESENCE? Bless us with your company on our road, O God. Take from us the burdens we long no longer to carry. Hear our confession of the things that blight our travelling, and, in your mercy, forgive us. Lord have mercy. CHRIST HAVE MERCY. Lord have mercy. Assurance and Response... In the name of Christ I say to you: You are forgiven and you are free. THANKS BE TO GOD. Prayer of Supplication: O God, whose Son, Jesus, joined the Emmaus travellers on the road, it is your way to join us as we travel through life. WHETHER WE TRAVEL TOWARDS REJOICING, OR RUN FROM THINGS WE FEAR, OPEN TO US THE SCRIPTURES AND THE WONDER OF YOUR RESURRECTION.

Bless us with the ability to sense your presence, AND GIVE US HEARTS THAT BURN WITH LOVE AND GRATITUDE. This is our prayer through Jesus, who taught us to pray, saying:... OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN HALLOWED BE YOUR NAME, YOUR KINGDOM COME, YOUR WILL BE DONE, ON EARTH AS IN HEAVEN. GIVE US TODAY OUR DAILY BREAD. FORGIVE US OUR SINS AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO SIN AGAINST US. SAVE US FROM THE TIME OF TRIAL AND DELIVER US FROM EVIL. FOR THE KINGDOM, THE POWER AND THE GLORY ARE YOURS NOW AND FOR EVER. AMEN. The Passing of the Peace Kia tau tonu te rangimarie o te Ariki ki a koutou. The peace of Christ be with you all. A KI A KOE ANO HOKI; AND ALSO WITH YOU. We exchange a sign of peace with one another. If there are younger ones present A Conversation with the Younger Ones Although there is no Sunday School today, young ones are welcome to enjoy the activity corner at the back of the church where they will find toys and an activity sheet. Sunday School begins again on 7 May. The First Lesson: Luke 24: 13-27 The Continuation: Luke 24: 28-35 This is the gospel of Christ. PRAISE TO CHRIST THE WORD.

Hymn: Ravenshaw William Henry Monk (1823-1889) 1. God, your word abiding, and our footsteps guiding, gives us joy forever, binds us all together. 2. Who can tell the pleasure, who recount the treasure, by your word imparted to the honest hearted? 3. Word of mercy, giving succour to the living; word of life, supplying comfort to the dying: 4. O that we, discerning its most holy learning, God, may love and fear you, evermore be near you. Henry Williams Baker (1821-1877) Sermon: Generally, sermons are posted on our website shortly after the service at: http://www.knoxchurch.co.nz/sermons.html Hard copies of the sermons are available before and after the service ask the person at the door. Music for Reflection: Christus der ist mein Leben Gustav Merkel (1827-1885) Hymn: Crüger Johann Crüger (1598-1662)

1. Light of the minds that know him, may Christ be light to mine! My sun in risen splendor, my light of truth divine; my guide in doubt and darkness, my true and living way, my clear light ever shining, my dawn of heaven's day. 2. Life of the souls that love him, may Christ be ours indeed! The living Bread from heaven on whom our spirits feed; who lived for love of others, who heaven s story told, and made of our life's journey a new Emmaus road. 3. Strength of the wills that serve him, may Christ be strength to me, who stilled the storm and tempest, who calmed the tossing sea; his Spirit's power to move me, his will to master mine, his cross to carry daily and conquer in his sign. 4. May it be ours to know him that we may truly love, and loving, fully serve him as serve the saints above; till in that home of glory with fadeless splendour bright, we serve in perfect freedom our strength, our life, our light. Timothy Dudley-Smith (b. 1926) Prayers for Others and Ourselves led by Kim Bathgate The Offering and Dedication We stand for the dedication of the Offering An ordinary walk through the day is turned from sadness into life. JESUS COMPANY OPENS EYES AND PUTS WARMTH INTO HUMAN HEARTS. May Jesus company do the same with our offering: turning the banal into wonder, THE DEFEATED INTO HOPING, the disengagement into flames of faith, THE SLOW WALK HOME INTO THE STORMING OF HEAVEN. Bless what we bring, FOR THE BLESSING OF THE WORLD. AMEN.

Notices Hymn: Richmond later form of melody by Thomas Haweis (1734-1820) 1. Fill thou my life, O Lord my God, in every part with praise, that my whole being may proclaim thy being and thy ways. 2. Not for the lip of praise alone nor ev n the praising heart I ask, but for a life made up of praise in every part: 4. Fill every part of me with praise: let all my being speak of thee and of thy love, O Lord, poor though I be and weak. 5. So shalt thou, Lord, receive from me the praise and glory due; and so shall I begin on earth the song for ever new. 3. Praise in the common things of life, its goings out and in; praise in each duty and each deed, however small and mean. Horatius Bonar (1808-1889) 6. So shall no part of day or night unblessed or common be, but all my life, in every step be fellowship with thee. Benediction and Sung Amen Postlude: Finale in D Minor Eric Thiman (1900-1975) Tea and coffee are served in the Knox Centre Lounge following the morning service Music printed in this order of service is covered under a music copyright licence agreement: LicenSing #604802
