The Emmaus News Columbus Indiana Area Emmaus Community, Inc. Letter to the Community: Walking and Flying Into 2006 This past Christmas season, I felt a little out of sync with those around me. As others seemed to thrive on the season of extremes (baking, decorating, eating, partying, and spending), I did not as much. I tend to try to find ways to smooth out the extremes of life. And a long time ago I decided that Christmas would be a lot more pleasant if it could just be spread out all year long. VOLUME 14 ISSUE 1 JANUARY 2006 DATES FOR UPCOMING FLIGHTS AND WALKS Flights #21 & #22 Mar. 18-20, 06 Men s Walk #59 Apr. 20-23, 06 Women s Walk #60 Apr. 27-30, 06 Men s Walk # 61 Oct. 19-22, 06 Women s Walk #62 Oct. 26-29, 06 Most of the better gifts I ever received didn't come at Christmas. One especially good one I even paid for myself. The gift was attending an Emmaus weekend. Quite a few people knew me eleven years ago when I went on Walk #11 and they can tell you how Emmaus was a good gift for me and how it has helped to grow me up spiritually. BUT, I never would have received that gift without the invitation and encouragement from my sponsor. I am positive that my sponsor never ever imagined that she was sponsoring a future Community Lay Director. If you like to give good gifts, please consider blessing someone with a Walk or a Flight in 2006. And if you didn't get exactly what you wanted under the tree, give yourself the blessing of working on a Walk or Flight. Working side-by-side with Jesus on one of these weekends is a tremendous way to grow in faith, make friends and have fun. I'll try to remember to tell you "Merry Christmas" in March or "Ho, ho, ho" in April. By the way, for those of you who haven't heard, I am going to be the Community Lay Director again in 2006. I think that God still has a lot more for me to learn and I'm getting another chance this year to learn it. They said to each other, Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the scriptures? Luke 24:32 Blessings & Peace, Bev Earley, Community Lay Director

PAGE 5 VOLUME 14 ISSUE 1 Work On a Walk! It is a great experience to be a Pilgrim on a walk, but many will agree that to serve on team is even more meaningful! Working on a walk is an excellent way to grow as a disciple and to become more aware of the effort people put into a Walk to Emmaus. Being part of a team of servants for an Emmaus weekend is a blessing. Bill Everhart and Jane Riley, as the spring walk LDs, are in the process of sending out letters and making their phone calls inviting members of our Emmaus community to serve on the spring walks. Those of you new to the community are wondering how one gets to serve on a walk for the very first time. The first-time worker is a valuable part of a walk team. Ideally 1/3 of the team members are serving for the very first time. That means about 15 men and 15 women will be invited to serve for the very first time on the spring walks! There is a process that we follow in selecting people for these positions: * Prayer We pray because want to make sure that it is God Who is putting together these teams. * Participation - Consideration is given as to who has been active in their participation at gatherings, candlelights, sendoffs, sponsoring, and closings. *There is a form called the Columbus IN Area Emmaus Community Information Sheet which is put in each pilgrim packet, is out on the table at gatherings, or can be found on the web home page as member info form. Fill out this form; then either give it to a board member or mail it to the address on the form. This really helps to tip us off as to who is willing to serve! * A team selection committee will meet. These people include the walk LD, board members, and others from the community. We consider a member s participation, information sheets, and other information. Together we help supply the walk LD with the names of several people and the positions that would be a good fit for those persons. If you serve on a team for the very first time, you would serve either as an assistant table leader, or a member of the agape or kitchen team. You will not be asked to be a LD for your very first job. * Then there s the letter in combination with a phone call. The walk LD thinks and prays about the potential team members and the walk, and then sends a letter asking you to consider serving in a specific position. *If the LD contacts you, this is what you do: you should take a few short days (not more than a week) to pray and meditate to discern whether or not God wants you to participate. If you believe that God is calling you to serve, say yes and give thanks for the opportunity to serve. If you feel that you cannot serve, politely decline, but also thank God for guiding that decision. God will form the team that God wants. So, who should be thinking and praying about working on the spring walks? A Pilgrim from the October walks. Yes, the board has decided to include pilgrims from the previous walk to work on the following walk. Our community s previous policy was to have a pilgrim wait a year prior to serving. Let me repeat that one more time: NEW COMMUNITY MEMBERS MAY SERVE ON THE VERY NEXT WALK. Any community member who has never, ever served before. You may have attended last spring s walk or a walk ten years ago. If you are ready to serve, we want to do our best to get you on a team! Please do your part by letting us know! Emmaus veterans. You pretty much know the routine, but filling out an information sheet helps us a lot. There is a team fee of $85, the same as what the pilgrims pay. But, scholarships are readily available for team fees, the same as for pilgrim fees. If you want to serve, please do not let the team fee be an obstacle to keeping you from turning in an information sheet. Just tell the LD or board rep of the walk that you would like a scholarship, and you will receive it. By filling out the information sheet, you let us know that you want to serve if not the spring walks then the fall walks, which will be here before you know it!
