In three special classes in June, Rabbi Yosef David will help you learn the how s and why s of the Shabbat morning service. June 16: Shacharis June 30: Musaf Parshas: Parshas Shelach Moses is pressed by the Jewish people to send twelve spies to the Land of Canaan (later to be called the Land of Israel). Forty days later they return carrying a gigantic cluster of grapes and two other large fruits. Ten of the spies warn that the inhabitants of the land are enormous in size and that the land 'consumes its inhabitants'. They convince the people that the land can't be conquered. Caleb and Joshua retain their faith in G-d, insisting that the Jewish people can, indeed, conquer the land. The people weep and proclaim that they'd rather return to Egypt. This tenth expression of a profound lack of faith in G-d prompts a Divine decree that entry into the Land should be delayed forty years. This decree was made on the ninth of the Hebrew month of Av -- known as Tisha B'Av. Numerous other tragedies occurred on Tisha B'Av, including the destruction of the first and second Temples and the expulsion of Spanish Jewry in 1492. Sometimes he would enjoy a new experience and sometimes he would not. But whatever the outcome, he was always pleased that he had tried something new, and truly excited to tell people about it. With Joseph as my inspiration, I suggested the Mitzvah Adventure concept. My vision was that congregants and guests would have the opportunity to learn about mitzvot of interest to them, and with the proper knowledge and guidance be inspired to try new things, enriching their lives with enhanced mitzvah observance. I speak from personal experience when I say that NHBZ provides an exceptional environment in which to try new things. For example, it may surprise some of you to learn that just over four years ago, my Hebrew reading was exceedingly slow, and I had never led davening. But with support and encouragement from so many individuals in this congregation, I ve led Shabbat services, weekday services, and Yomtov services; I ve read Torah at weekday minyanim on a semi-regular basis; and I ve even taught Hebrew classes. I can t imagine a better place to learn more, do more, and grow as a Jew. I hope that everyone reading this will view the Mitzvah Adventure program as an opportunity to try something new and grow Jewishly, regardless of your current level of knowledge or observance. Even though we might be hesitant to try new things, I encourage each of us to take a chance. Learn something new. Try something new. I think you ll be glad you did. I know I am. With gratitude, appreciation, and love, Louis Goldman

CHALLAH: THE DIVINE DOUGH How Jewish women can unleash the holiness of bread Although we usually refer to the braided Shabbos loaves as challah, halachically, challah does not mean bread or dough. It s root word means ordinary or secular, and refers to the mitzvah described in this week s Torah portion (Numbers 15:17-21): " It shall be that when you eat the bread of the land, you shall set aside a portion [of dough] for G-d." Rebbetzin Tziporah Heller notes that in the biblical text the mitzvah of challah is juxtaposed with the laws prohibiting idol worship. What is the connection? The nature of idol worship is to see the Creator as being removed from His creations... To idol worshippers it is inconceivable that G-d can be found in the midst of the world but, by taking challah, we are saying that G-d is here! He is the source of our souls, bodies, and the forces that sustain them. He is One, and nothing is separate from His transcendental unity. Women are given precedence in performing the mitzvah of taking challah. As life-givers they can rectify the world by relating it to its source They are the ones who knead the dough and feel how its components of flour and water -- physical and spiritual -- join. May it be our merit to see the unity and wholeness -- that challah so deeply represents -- redefining the fragmented and wounded world in which we live. - excerpted from Rebbetzin Tziporah Heller, at www.aish.com NEXT BOARD MEETING: Sunday, June 24, 10:30 am For information or to join Sisterhood, call the NHBZ office at 314-991-2100, ext. 3, or email: sisterhood@nhbz.org
