RUTH CHAPTER 1:1-5 MEDIA REFERENCE NUMBER SM-278 - NOVEMBER 30, 1997 THE THEME OF THE BOOK: The Romance of Redemption THE TITLE OF THE MESSAGE: INTRODUCTION: The Reading of the Text 1:1-5 The Sentence Summation of the Text Is this - that there s a story that is being told that had several intended purposes to convey. First, That God is very much at work in all of our lives, even in the times that we don t really think so. And second, that this story is designed to communicate to us God s active love toward an outsider, a commoner, someone of no apparent value. Jeremiah 31:3 The LORD has appeared of old to me, saying: "Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you. I John 4:19 We love Him... BECAUSE HE FIRST LOVED US. the word love is not once mentioned in the book - but is overwhelmingly obvious Boaz neither counted the cost nor tallied the expense of delivering Ruth in her situation 1

this book teaches us that the act of redemption is not a business transaction, but a love affair it s read during the feast of Pentecost - how appropriate outline - RUTH I. Ruth s Preparation, 1:1-22 a.) Ruth s Background, 1:1-5 b.) Ruth s Choice, 1:6-18 c.) Ruth s Journey, 1:19-22 Historical Background to the Book of Ruth Written in the year 1,000 bc by an unconfirmed author, the book of Ruth is a tender love story during difficult days. It s the 8th Of the Old Testament (completion) The Times The Nation The People During the Judges of Israel, Violence and Evil practices existed, found in Judges chapter 6 Israel was in decline, set aside, while this Gentile Bride emerges Had become wayward from God Judges 17:6 In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes. 2

Historical Background to Ruth the Person Her Personal Life Her Situation Her Story A Gentile Moabitess, she was married to a hebrew Living in a Pagan land, she herself a pagan would have ended just as the gods she worshipped The Prophetic Background Found in the Book of Ruth That Gentiles could receive the gift of salvation by putting their faith in God That from Ruth and her blood, would eventually come Jesus the Messiah of the world That Boaz was a type, a forerunner of Jesus Christ That God is in control over the affairs of men The Book is Filled with the Self-Sacrificing Love of a Man Named Boaz ((Whose Name Means - Swift Strength)) Romans15:4 For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. Now The Bible Says 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration (the breath of God) of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 3

John 5:39 "You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is these that bear witness of Me; So in all actuality, This Book is Filled with the Self-Sacrificing Love of a Man Named Jesus ((Who s Name Means - The Lord Saves)) 1.) Redemption is born out of Difficult Days vv. 1 Now it came to pass, in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem, Judah, went to dwell in the country of Moab, he and his wife and his two sons. a.) God s Way of Working Supernaturally-Naturally vv. 1a Historically in the days when the judges ruled Why Were There Judges? Israel had lost its vision of God Israel was intended to be a Theocracy 4

Politically that there was a famine in the land Judges 6:1-4 Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and for seven years he gave them into the hands of the Midianites. 2 Because the power of Midian was so oppressive, the Israelites prepared shelters for themselves in mountain clefts, caves and strongholds. 3 Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, the Midianites, Amalekites and other eastern peoples invaded the country. 4 They camped on the land and ruined the crops all the way to Gaza and did not spare a living thing for Israel, neither sheep nor cattle nor donkeys. Leaving Bethlehem Elimelech Decided to Try to Escape the Judgment of God But You Can t Do It - Really << He Flees During The Work of God >> ~~~~~~~~~~~~He Did a Jonah~~~~~~~~~~ But Why for Moab? Because Moab Had Plenty of Jobs, Their Economy was Strong, Let s Go to it s Better There Job 23:8-11 "Look, I go forward, but He is not there, and backward, but I cannot perceive Him; When He works on the left hand, I cannot behold Him; when He turns to the right hand, I cannot see Him. But He knows the way that I take; when He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold. My foot has held fast to His steps; I have kept His way and not turned aside. 1 Peter 1:6-7 6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, 5

c.) Supernaturally - Naturally: vv. 1c of Bethlehem, Judah Micah 5:2 But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting." 2.) Redemption is beyond our Earning it vv. 2 The name of the man was Elimelech, the name of his wife was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion-- Ephrathites of Bethlehem, Judah. And they went to the country of Moab and remained there. Elimelech Naomi Mahlon Chilion my God is King Lovely, Pleasantness Sick, Sickly Puny, Wasting, Wasted - Wimpy look at verse 4 Orpah Ruth Tower of strength Beautiful * Boaz means Swift Strength, Able to Help Puny was married to Pillar of Strength and Sickly was married to Beautiful Puny and Pillar sitting in a Tree... God Was Very Much in Control moving to a predetermined point 6

b.) Bethlehem, the place of redemption vv. 2b Boaz was from there, and Ruth will be redeemed there... Matthew 2:1-7 1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him." 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 So they said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet: 6 'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are not the least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you shall come a Ruler who will shepherd My people Israel.' " 7 Then Herod, when he had secretly there was no earthly reason why ONLY THAT GOD HAD A PROPHETIC APPOINTMENT THERE THE PROBABILTY OF JESUS BEING BORN IN BETHLEHEM university of texas mathematical department 10/17 power 10,000,000,000,000,00000 Luke 2:1-6 1 And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. 3 So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city. 4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. 6 So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. Caesar Augustus had no idea that he was being a puppet in the hand of the living God... Caesar was nothing without god. In fact he later opened a place called LITTLE Caesar s 7

Galatians 4:4-5 But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons Learning from their Failures #1 They Left What God had Given them The House of Bread they left their place of worship #2 They Escaped to a strange land - Moab God had said to Israel, stay out of Moab #3 They Determined to Visit Moab - Indefinitely they went for food and wound up buying the farm Vv. 2... And they went to the country of Moab and remained there. Vv. 4... And they dwelt there about ten years. Psalm 1:1-2 1 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night. #4 They took Moabite Wives they departed from their faith being unequally yoked Ezra 9 - Deuteronomy 7 - Nehemiah 13 8

2 Corinthians 6:14 Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? 3.) God Appears Greatest Against a Black Background vv. 3 a.) The Death of These Men Had Been Appointed by God Verse 3/5 Then Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died; and she was left, and her two sons... Vv. 5 Then both Mahlon and Chilion also died; so the woman survived her two sons and her husband. Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, Psalm 90:12 Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. THE LORD IS INVOLVED IN EVERY DEATH, OF EVERY ONE, EVERY WHERE... ((( even the unborn ))) (Judgment, Due to Disobedience) Isaiah 61:1-3 1 "The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me, because the LORD has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; he has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn, 3 To console those who mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; 9

b.) The Faith of Ruth is Beginning to be Prepared the tearing down process of God had Begun 1. His sovereign hand goes to work when He has a plan sister, move over! 2. He brings us to a place of isolation aloneness of soul, desperation! 3. He allows us to run ourselves out our plans, perceptions, ideas disappear! What About You - Are You Coming to the End? c.) This Tragedy was in the Prophetic Plan of God Genesis 12:2-3 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. every nation of the world has either been born into or has married into the line of messianic promise Abraham had a brother named Heran, who had a son Named Lot, Lot had Incest with His Daughters and they had sons, named Moab and Ammon... Which Became Bitter Enemies of Israel 10

EVERY NATION, IN EVERY COUNTRY, ON EVERY CONTINENT IS LINKED TO ABRAHAM and this promise In Matthew 1 and Luke 3 the line of Jesus is recorded which goes back to Ruth But the Moabites had been condemned by God how then can the Moabites ever be saved? By Ruth, being a Moabite, that would marry into the Messianic Lineage of Jesus Christ How Can I - Being So Far From God Get Near Him? Psalm 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart-- these, O God, You will not despise. Ezekiel 33:11 "Say to them: 'As I live,' says the Lord GOD, 'I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die... b.) Sinning in the face of God vv. 4 Now they took wives of the women of Moab: the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth. And they dwelt there about ten years. 11

The Hebrew men would have been held responsible... but what about Orpah and Ruth God s Amazing Grace is Greater Than Our Ability to Sin... EXCEPT ONE SIN Matthew 12:30-32 30 "He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters. 31 And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. 12
