1. The Pressure Of Retaliation Romans 12:14-21 14 Bless those who persecute you. Don t curse them; pray that God will bless them. 15 Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with each other. Don t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don t think you know it all! 17 Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable. 18 Do all you can to live in peace with everyone. 19 Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, I will take revenge; I will pay them back, says the Lord. 20 Instead, If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals of shame on their heads. 21 Don t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good. (NLT) Retaliation (revenge) is something God says should be left up to Him and not taken into our own hands or else we will ultimately be conquered by evil. 1. How can we put this into practice? 4

a) Bless Them Romans 12:14 Bless those who persecute you. Don t curse them; pray that God will bless them. (NLT) God wants you to bless them and to ask Him to bless them, too. 2. Is this easy to do? 5

b) Treat Them Right Romans 12:17 Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable. (NLT) God does not give you permission to mistreat someone just because they have mistreated you. 3. Why can t we treat people like they treat us? 6

c) Live Peaceably With Them Romans 12:18 Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone. (NLT) God holds you personally responsible for what you do or don t do to live peaceably with others. 4. Is it possible to live peaceably with everyone? 7

d) Surprise Them Romans 12:20 Instead, If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals of shame on their heads. (NLT) Nothing will surprise someone who has offended you than when you are willing to provide them with a delicious meal and large glass of ice tea! 5. Why would this surprise them? 8

e) Forgive Them Matthew 18:21-22 21 Peter came to Him and asked, Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times? 22 No, not seven times, Jesus replied, but seventy times seven! (NLT) Our willingness to forgive others should be limitless. 6. How can you put this into practice? 9

Matthew 6:14-15 14 If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. 15 But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins. (NLT) Deciding to forgive is one of the best decisions that you can make and deciding not to forgive is one of the worst decisions you can make. 7. Why is our forgiveness connected to forgiving others? 10

Luke 23:34 Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do. (NKJV) Jesus models forgiveness because He would never ask us to do something that He was not willing to do. 8. Why was it important for Jesus to forgive them? Oscar Wilde: Always forgive your enemies, nothing annoys them so much. 11

Mark 11:25 Whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him... (NKJV) Forgiveness should be extended to everyone for everything that they ve done wrong. 9. Are there really no limits to forgiveness? Dr. Richard Dobbins: Forgiveness...does not have to be received to be given; nor, given to be received. 12

Colossians 3:13 Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. (The Message) It s important to forgive as quickly as possible. 10. Does this mean that we shouldn t carry a grudge? Dr. Chuck Lawless: Answer these questions to see if you need to forgive someone. 13

1. Has someone deeply hurt me or one of my family members? 2. Do I still get angry or anxious when I think about that person? 3. If that person has already passed away, am I justifying my continued anger? 4. Do I quietly hope that person also hurts like I have? 5. Would I help that person if he or she needed ministry? 6. Can I pray for that person? 14

7. Would I be frustrated if God blesses that person? 8. Am I willing for this post to confront me and convict me? Danny Duvall: You know you have forgiven someone when you no longer have to tell the story. 15
