TIMOTHY BOOK GROUP The St. Timothy Book Group met recently to discuss All Standing: The Remarkable Story of the Jeanie Johnston: The Legendary Irish Famine Ship by Kathryn Miles. The group rated the book a 6.75 on our ratings scale of 1-10. Our discussion focused on the overwhelming problems that the Irish faced during the potato famine and the incredible risks they undertook in trying to make a better life for their families. We also reflected on the social and political problems that led to the famine and the insight that, in varying ways, these same kinds of problems continue to be present in our culture today. Our next meetings and book selections are scheduled as follows: Monday, September 30: The Paris wife: A Novel by Paula McLain Monday, October 28: Gold by Chris Cleave Monday, November 25: My Life With the Saints by James Martin, SJ All are welcome to attend our meetings! They are on a drop-in basis, so feel free to drop by and share your insights! Dear friends- Thanks to all those who gathered for our annual parish picnic last Sunday. The weather could not have been more perfect. In fact, a number of mother s of brides have asked for my advice about choosing a wedding date for their daughters weddings since they seem to think I have the power to order up nice weather. I am grateful to all those who came, to all those who helped set up and clean up, to those who donated food, and to our wonderful parish staff who work so hard to make this and so many other parish events such successes. As I mentioned in last week s bulletin, this weekend there is a special collection to assist with the costs of health care and retirement benefits for the priests of the Archdiocese. There are envelopes for that purpose at the ends of the pews and you are welcome to drop your donation in with the regular collection. I think we all appreciate the service Fr. Emerson gives to our parish, and there are many other retired priests who continue to be of great assistance in many other parishes, so whatever help you can give is greatly appreciated and goes directly to those who need this help at this stage of their lives. On Saturday we had a retreat for the students in our Youth Ministry program. This retreat day kicks off their religious education program for this year. Although I must look like their grandfather, I still enjoy working with this age group. Most of them are really good kids but they live in a world that subjects them to so many different voices and pulls them in so many different ways. It is certainly a lot tougher to be a teenager today than when I was growing up. Keep these kids in your prayers. And if you have children or grandchildren in the program, don t be shy about talking with them about the importance of having God in their lives and being part of our parish family, especially by worshipping with us each Sunday. Sometimes they don t seem to be listening, but in most cases they are, and your voice and your example can be a huge help in passing on the faith to this generation. Since, unfortunately, some parents do not provide the example to their children that they should in terms of faith, I m particularly grateful to all those parishioners who generously volunteer their time to teach at all levels in our religious education program. This Sunday marks Catechetical Sunday, a day when we salute and ask God to bless the teachers and volunteers in our Religious Education program. They deserve our support and our thanks. Fr. Culloty
