GREAT LENT Fr. Lany Chacko Asst. Vicar This year, Great Lent begins on Monday, Feb 16. The importance of this Fast is much evident from the name itself. This is observed to actively participate in the Resurrection of Christ through a life of passion and suffering. The Church prescribes the forty days of fast in 6 weeks which ends on fortieth Friday before the Passion Week. But the Fast gets completed only with the Easter and therefore it is also called fifty days Lent. The Monday, the beginning of the Great Lent, there is a special service called the service of reconciliation (Shubukono) and the purpose of which is that the faithful enter into the season of Fasting having reconciled with all. This means that the Fast is holy and being holy it would become proper only if it is approached with preparation. Lent is a season of soul-searching and repentance. It is a season for reflection and taking stock. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as a preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism. By observing the forty days of Lent, the individual Christian imitates Jesus withdrawal into the wilderness for forty days. Lent is a time of the year filled with spirituality, prayers, liturgies, fasting, prostrations, repentance, charity, solemn hymns, and prayers for the sick. It is the storehouse of spirituality for the whole year.lent gives us time to contemplate on matters of the spirit, to concentrate on the more important matters of life, our life with Christ. We can then lead a life of purity, holiness and peace with Our Lord. It isa time basically to be in touch with Our Creator. It is a time to know Christ. What does it mean to know Christ? Saint Paul tells us in Philippians 3:10, that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship ofhis sufferings, being conformed to His death. This is what knowing Christ means. Someone may say, resurrection, suffering and death, is this what knowing Christ is all about? Saint Paul makes it clear here that to know Christ, we must share in His sufferings, be conformed to His death andthen we can realize the power of His Resurrection and His victory over death. This is the journey of Lent that we wishto travel through today. During the Great Lent the Orthodox Church focuses on three basic disciplines;fasting, prayer and almsgiving.the true meaning of fasting is not in the type of food we eat during Lent. This is only physical, but more importantly is our spirits. How do they benefit from fasting? Do we fast from our sins? Do we make the extra effort to resist sin and Satan? What is unique about our fast? Remember not only Christians fast, but so do Buddhists and Muslims, some people fast for political reasons also. But what makes our fast unique? One author states that Adam broke the fast in Paradise by eating of the forbidden fruit and this is how man s original sin is revealed to us. Christ, the new Adam, begins by fasting. Adam was tempted and he succumbed to temptation; Christ was tempted and He overcame temptation. So fasting is not just a mere obligation or custom but it is connected with the very mystery of life and death, of salvation. Along with fasting Prayer is the second discipline which we should increase during the Great Lent. Together with fasting, prayer clears one s 2

mind from confusing thoughts and wrong behavior. Prayer is a conversation with God.Sincere prayer assists one not only to express his/her inner thoughts to Him, but also to hear what He tells us to do. The Lenten season as we have said is also deeply associated with the life of repentance and purity. Repentance comes from the Greek word Metanoia. Meta means change and nous means mind.so, Metanoia is the changing of one s mind.this is what Saint Paul speaks about in Romans 12:2, Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by therenewing of your mind. During the Great Fastthe OrthodoxChristian is directed back to the basics of the Christian life-notonly to increased prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, but also to increasedattention to healing broken relationships. On the eve of the Fast, a rite ofmutual forgiveness (Shubukono) is celebrated in Orthodox churches, in which all thefaithful bow down and ask forgiveness of one another. This rite illustratesthat every failure to love inthought, word or deed is a betrayal of all human beings; but it also showsthat the Church, the new man fashioned in Christ, is founded upon andunited by divine forgiveness and compassion.therefore, the first breakthrough this fortress of sin is forgiveness: the return to unity, solidarity, love. To forgive is to put between me and my enemy the radiant forgivenessof God Himself. The Shubukonoreminds usthat the starting point of the Christian life is God s forgiveness of us, andthat if we are to progress in the spiritual life we too must learn to forgivefrom the heart (cf. Matthew 18:35). Lent provides each person an annual opportunity for self-examination and improving the standards of faith and morals in his Christian life. To sum up, we should observe the Great Lent meaningfully as our Lord Jesus Christ exhorts in the Lenten season Love one Another. Do not let this Lent go past without something changing in your life for the better. May the blessing of the Great Lent be with you all. a-e- c k`m `mkp-c³ h«-tè-cnâ amà Znh- m-kn-tbmkv a - - n-bn h -t»-cn tpmk-^nt -bpw, Gen-bm-Ω-bp-tS-bpw, ]p{x- \mbn 1858 HIvtSm-_ 31 \p P\n- p. {]my-ani hnzym-`ymkw a - - n-bn-epw, sslkv qƒ hnzym-`ymkw tim bw kn.- Fw. L.L H.G PATHROSE MAR OSTHATHIOS MALABAR DIOCESE MP Peter was born as the son of Mukhencheril Cherian and Kunjumariamma on 20-06-1886. After preliminary education under Chandy Asan and Kanjiratungal Paili Asan, M P Peter joined Anglo Vernacular School, Tripunithura. HG passed Matriculation with rank. Completed FA from Maharajas College, BA from St Josephs College - Trichy, LT from Trivandrum. M P Peter after completing his education started his career as a teacher in Njarackal High School and later in Maharajas High School. Later he left the job. HG was ordained Deacon by Murimattathil Mar Ivanios. Dn M P Peter took BD from Serampore University. During this time, Diwan Sir T Vijayaraghavachary promoted the movement for equal rights for the lower caste. The Diwan appointed Dn M P Peter as special officer for reformation and upliftment of the lower castes. At this time even Gandhiji had not begun his movement for Harijans. M P Peter was ordained Priest by Yuyakim Mar Ivanios. In 1924 Fr M P Peter founded the Servant of Cross (Sleeba Dasa samooham). During that time over 20,000 people from the lower caste came to Christianity. In 1943 Geevarghese II Bava ordained Fr M P Peter as Remban and in 1953 as Episcopa, with the name Mar Osthathios. The mission activities started by Pulikottil Joseph Mar Dionysius, which was later continued by Parumala Mar Gregorios was taken up by Pathrose Mar Osthathios. His Grace was given the charge of the underdeveloped Malabar diocese. His Grace led the diocese from Carmel Dayara, Kandanad. His Grace led a very simple. Even the car which was given to His Grace was sold by him to raise funds for mission activities. HG passed away on Feb 2nd 1968 and was laid to rest in Carmel Dayara. His Grace has also participated in the Vaikom Satyagraham. Speech by Osthatiose Thirumeni at Vaikom Sathyagraha in 1924. I feel that the Maharajas of Travancore and Cochin come to fully understand the sufferings of the poor in the assertion of their elementary rights of citizenship. They will surely rise in the name of God and humanity and by means of a proclamation put a stop to this kind of sinful slavery. If the ancient Syrian Christian community of Kerala had been sufficiently faithful to the freedomgiving gospel of Christ they would have done wonders in his great humanitarian work, but it is not too late.i therefore appeal to my community to show more interest in the anti-unapproachability movements, so that the Kingdom of God may be hastened in this great land. 5

L.L H.G Dr. Thomas Mar Makarios Metropolitan His Grace Dr. Thomas Mar Makarios was born on May 26, 1926 to Mr. Chacko & Mrs. Mariamma Kuttikandathil. In 1952, he was ordained as a Priest by His Holiness Catholicos Geevarghese Baselios I. Afterwards he came to India s capital of New Delhi where he organized congregations in North Indian cities, in which ultimately he became the first Vicar of the Indian Orthodox Church in New Delhi. It was during the time of the litigation of the Church that the Metropolitan as a young priest, showed his ingenuity as leader and scholar in Church History. He helped the lawyers of the Church understand the history, Traditions and Canons of the Church. This was instrumental in seeking an historic verdict by the Supreme Court of India in favor of the Church in 1958. He has also studied in various religious institutions in England, Germany, Switzerland and France. He has been in the U.S since 1963 and earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Nashota House in Wisconsin, a Master s of Sacred Theology from Virginia Theological Seminary, and a Doctorate in Theology from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond. He returned back to India and worked as a professor of Church History at Orthodox Theological Seminary in Kottayam. In 1975, Fr. Thomas was consecrated as Metropolitan Thomas Mar Makarios by His Holiness Catholicos Augen I. In that same year the Catholicos appointed Metropolitan Mar Makarios as the first Metropolitan of the Bombay Diocese. Later in 1979, His Grace Mar Makarios was enthroned as the first Metropolitan of the American Diocese of the Indian Orthodox Church. Since 1985, Metropolitan has been teaching religion classes at Alma College in Michigan. In 1990, Alma College conferred Metropolitan with the degree of Doctor of Divinity Honorees Causa. In 1994, His Grace Mar Makarios was appointed as the first Metropolitan of the newly created Canada & Europe Diocese. His Grace Dr. Thomas Mar Makarios passed away on February 23, 2008. as a result of a tragic car accident in early January 2008 during his arch pastoral visit to his diocese in the United Kingdom 6
