PREFACE This Calendar and Lectionary gives the readings and psalms for every day of the Christian year according to the calendar of the Scottish Episcopal Church as used at St John s. For each day it tells us where we are in the seasons of the Christian Year (Advent, Easter etc.), which saints are remembered on which day and what liturgical colours are used for the vestments and altar frontals. It does not give prayers such as collects or tell us which services are held on which day. It can be used in different ways. It tells us which readings and psalms are used at the Sunday and daily services (, and ) and these may also be used at other services. Occasionally the readings given here may be changed according to the needs of our worship. The pattern of Bible reading and psalms may also be used for private prayer in the knowledge that we are praying the same texts on the same day as Christians all over the world. The readings used with the Book of Common Prayer are not given as they can easily be found in the Prayer Book. Nigel Cook, the diocesan treasurer, has produced this Calendar and Lectionary each year and allowed us to adapt it to our customs at St John s. His death this year is a great loss to us all. Requiescat in pace. Stephen Holmes, Associate Rector 3

The Church of St John the Evangelist, Edinburgh Calendar and Lectionary 2017 2018 INTRODUCTION 1 The Calendar included here is the Revised Scottish Calendar approved by the General Synod of the Scottish Episcopal Church in 1991. The commemorations are classified in six groups which indicate not importance but precedence. Where two commemorations fall on the same day, that which has the lower number takes precedence. Commemorations in categories 1-4 are intended to be observed by the whole Church. Those in categories 5 and 6 are for discretionary use, those in category 5 having readings provided. 2 Readings for the on Sundays and certain Holy Days are taken from the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL). This offers a three-year cycle of readings for use at celebrations of the on Sundays and certain Holy Days. It is based on the table of readings produced by the Roman Catholic Church in 1969, which in turn was developed by the Consultation on Common Texts and published in 1984 as the Common Lectionary. The revision of 1992 is the result of reflection on the 1984 text, and was undertaken by members of the English Language Liturgical Consultation, which includes ecumenical associations of churches from Australia, Canada, Great Britain, New Zealand, South Africa and the United States. The Synoptic Gospels are read semi-continuously, Matthew in Year A, Mark in Year B, Luke in Year C, with passages from the Fourth Gospel occurring at significant points during the three-year cycle. The other New Testament writings are also arranged to be read semi-continuously over the three years. Old Testament passages have been selected for every Sunday and many holy days, and a psalm is provided as a congregational response to the reading of the Old Testament. The Revised Common Lectionary arranges that the Old Testament readings from Advent Sunday through to Pentecost are linked to the Gospel. On the Sundays after Pentecost two Old Testament Readings are provided, each with its accompanying psalm. The first set (Track 1) offers semi-continuous reading of Old Testament texts, the second set (Track 2) offers readings which relate to the theme of the Gospel reading. The former course of readings is followed in this publication. Celebrations using the ic rites in the Scottish Prayer Book 1929 use the lectionary given in that book which is based on the medieval Sarum Lectionary. Readings for Holy Days not provided for in the Revised Common Lectionary follow those in the Canadian Book of Alternative Services, otherwise readings are provided from alternative sources. 4

3 Readings for the on weekdays are taken from the daily eucharistic lectionary of the Roman Church, which contains a two-year cycle. Each set includes two readings, one of which is a passage from a Gospel, and a psalm. Readings for holy days in category 6 are not provided; eucharistic readings for these occasions may be taken either from the common of saints, or from such works as Exciting Holiness, Lesser Feasts and Fasts, For All the Saints or the Roman lectionary for saints days. 4 Readings for use at Daily Prayer are also included, derived from those in the Canadian Book of Alternative Services. Proper psalms provided in that order are shown here, supplemented by the psalm provision of the Common Worship lectionary. To accommodate the needs of congregations who attend daily prayer only on Sundays, readings for Sunday are the Gospel at the with a Patristic commentary (Advent-Trinity) or the second set of Old Testament readings (Track 2) for the from the RCL which relate to the theme of the Gospel reading (Sundays after Trinity). Sunday uses the four-year Narrative Lectionary (marked NL ) for one of the readings from September to May and otherwise uses the readings from the next year of the RCL. The psalms given here for Sundays are those from the Table of Proper Psalms in the Scottish Prayer Book 1929. ARRANGEMENT AND USE OF THE CALENDAR & LECTIONARY 5 Lectionary cycles: Readings for the on Sundays and major Holy Days follow a 3-year cycle; readings for the on weekdays and Daily Prayer follow a 2-year cycle. The cycles of the current year are indicated at the head of each page. (During the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter readings at the on weekdays do not vary between years.) 6 Ordinary Time: During the time between Epiphany and Lent, and again between Pentecost and Advent, the collects, eucharistic antiphons and readings follow a single sequence of 34 weeks of ordinary time interrupted by the Lent and Easter seasons. The number of the current week is indicated on each page of the Calendar next to the heading. In the publications prepared for the Church of England listed on page 6 a different referencing sequence for this time is followed: between Epiphany and Lent the readings are indicated according to the numbered Sunday after Epiphany; between Pentecost and Advent the readings are indicated by the second number (in italics) which follows the heading. 7 Observances: At the head of each day, following the day of the week and date in the month, are indicated the liturgical colour for the day and the Sunday, feast or commemoration to be observed. Days in categories 1 and 2 are indicated in BOLD CAPITALS, days in categories 3 (except the weekdays of Lent) and 4 in Bold Normal Case, days in category 5 in Bold Italic, and days in category 6 and days with no commemoration in Italic. 5

From 17 December until 1 January inclusive, and from Ash Wednesday until Easter 2, occurring observances in category 6 are commemorated only. The proper to be used is that of the day in the season; an occurring category 6 observance may be either ignored or its collect said after the collect of the day or during the intercession. Where the form of Daily Prayer to be used on any particular day differs from that indicated for the week, this is indicated here. 8 : In the left hand column for each day are listed the readings to be used at the. For commemorations in category 6 no proper readings are listed: those given are the ferial readings for that day in the season, which may be used to preserve continuity. Common readings for the observance of saints days in category 6 are given on page 69; readings for other occasions are given on page 70. For ferial days in the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter the collects and eucharistic antiphons may be those of the preceding Sunday or of the day in the week, except that the propers of Christmas Day, Epiphany, Ash Wednesday and Ascension Day are to be used on the days following. On the weekdays following the feasts of the Baptism of our Lord, Pentecost, the Holy Trinity and Christ the King, the collect to be used is that of the numbered proper of the week. Otherwise the collect of Sunday is used on ferial days during the week following. 9 Daily Prayer: At the head of each page are indicated the form of Daily Prayer to be followed from both Scottish Daily Prayer (Sco:) and the Franciscan office Celebrating Common Prayer (SSF:), together with the psalter week from the Roman office (RoPs:). Variations applicable to particular days are there noted. Psalms for the morning are separated by an asterisk from those for the evening. The provision of the Common Worship weekday lectionary is given in sans serif type. The collect to be used is as indicated for the above, except that on Saturdays (except those days in categories 1 and 2) evening prayer is of the following Sunday and the collect of that Sunday or other occurring observance is used. Days in categories 1 and 2, and certain days in categories 4 and 5, also have first evening prayer of that observance, as indicated in the calendar. Otherwise, the liturgical day begins and ends at midnight. However, on Christmas Eve and Easter Eve the collect at evening prayer is of that day. 10 The Lections: Normally three readings are given to be divided between morning and evening prayer, but on certain Holy Days separate readings are given for morning and evening. The psalms and readings may be shortened at discretion by omitting verses given in brackets. Verse numbers followed by a or b indicate the first or second part of the verse only. All biblical references (including psalms) are according to the New Revised Standard Version of the bible. Where another version is used, appropriate adaptations may be made. The abbreviations employed here are those of the New Revised Standard Version and are indicated on page 70. 6
