The Beacon December 2016 UMW NEWS Well, we made it through fall. UMW Sunday, guest night, and the bazaar many thanks to everyone for all the cooking, baking and time involved. Many thanks also to those who are not active members but do so many things to help. A special thanks to Denise Hayes for invitations, posters, etc. Thanks to Mark, Brad, Steve and the men who help. Our next meeting is Tuesday, December 13 at 9:30am. Donations & program giving by Pastor Brad and Debbie Nelson-Watkins. Brad will also install our 2017 officers. This is our Christmas party - when we reveal our secret prayer pal and exchange gifts, relax and have fun! God Bless and Merry Christmas - Carol Kemper COUPLE FELLOWSHIP Couples Fellowship enjoyed a great time in November during our progressive dinner. Again, thanks to the Ekstrand s for salads, the Davis for the main course, the Roberts & Kane s for desserts hosted at the Tracy s home. Our Christmas gathering will be held at the home of Dean & Sandy Cantu on Saturday, December 10 at 6:00pm. Bring an ornament for our white elephant sale. All couples are invited for good food, fun, and fellowship! Peace Debbie Nelson-Watkins CHRISTMAS CAROLING The Elmwood churches are holding the annual community Christmas caroling on Saturday, December 18 at 3:00pm. We will gather at Elmwood UMC and divide into groups to go to shut-ins and nursing homes in the area. Cookies, cocoa and coffee follows usually around 5 or 5:30pm. Please join all of our brothers and sisters in Christ for a fun afternoon of singing, fellowship and spreading the love of Christ.

J- Walker s student ministry (Senior High) continues to thrive and grow spiritually, socially, and intellectually. In November, we had fun as we went ice-skating and also continue to grow through Sunday school. We re excited that Alex Davis has come on board to work with our team as one of the senior high Sunday school teachers. In December, we are planning to join the area churches in Christmas caroling, and then conclude with our student ministry Christmas party at the church, December 18 th (4-6 pm). The God Squad (Middle School Junior High Ministry) continues to have fun as well. In November, we were able to travel to Peoria Christian Center for bowling and fun, followed by pizza and other goodies. They continue to grow spiritually and emotionally on Sunday mornings and other times. They encourage the congregation to join them in a mission with heifer project donations this month. So, if you still have some donations you d like to get to them, I m sure Lori Johnson would be happy to receive them. We plan to join the area church for caroling on December 18 at 4 pm and conclude with our Christmas party that same day. New senior Ministry Jesus People We are excited that we are launching a new senior ministry. We ve had several trainings and are ready to begin to serve seniors in our local communities. This December, we will start worship services in three different locations at least once a month for seniors. We have persons who have volunteered to lead these events. We will also have persons working with the pastor to intensify our visitation of homebound, hospital visitation, card writing to persons who do not regularly receive uplifting words and shut-in persons. Words from Philippians 2:3-4 set a firm foundation for this coming ministry, not only in December but in the days to come, do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourself, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others. Connie Dalton has so graciously agreed to lead this group. It is a blessing to be in a place where we not only reach to our members, but the others who are seniors in the area, whether family members of our church congregation or persons we have grown in relationship with through the Manna Meal senior programs or other ways in which people have come into our lives. If there is a senior who you think would appreciate or need our contract and support, please contact Connie Dalton or Pastor Bradley Watkins.

Glad Tidings Words from the old Christmas Carol come to mind, From heaven above to earth I come, to hear good news to every home, glad tidings of great joy I bring, where I am now will gladly sing. How do we share heaven this time of year to people who are struggling in their daily lives on earth? I love the phrase glad tiding of great joy I bring. This reminds me that I don t have to be fake or inauthentic in my presentation, but I should offer some help to people. As we go throughout this season of Advent and Christmas, how do we offer some hope to someone? That help can come in many forms for many people, it could be just a kind word or gesture, for others it will come in the form of a sincere concern for their current well-being. Yes, well-being in this season of glad tidings, there so many who are struggling with health issues, family dysfunction, stress at work, stressed because they don t have work, grief with the loss of loved ones and depression. We are in a position to do something good. I was sharing with someone the other day how people see us (Elmwood United Methodist congregation) as a place and a group of hope in Elmwood and the surrounding communities. No, we cannot fix everyone s problems, but we can stand with everyone. I believe that s what God did when God sent His son into this world to stand with us. God rejoices and cries with us, as we are called to stand with others especially those who feel as though they have no one else. The new Jesus People senior adult ministry is just another example of us standing with those who feel alone. It is a joy to talk with and to work with people seeking to comfort and to offer a word of uplift to people who need to be uplifted. This season is one that invites us to be a part of that glad tidings, not just to offer historical words or words from historical songs or even some of the new upbeat contemporary Christmas songs. It is a time for us to truly be a ray of Hope on cloudy days.

STUFF-A-BUS Wanted: Individuals to help us un-decorate the church on Saturday, January 7 at 9:00am. We need muscles take the boxes and totes back to the garage and well as people to put away items so we know where to find them next year! Please help pitch in to make this a quick and easy job!! We are again working with the Elmwood Elementary School in Stuff-a-bus campaign. The students have generously donated food the past several weeks. The donations from the school will be delivered to the church on Monday, December 19 at 9:30am. We will be dividing the food between the five churches in town to make Christmas baskets for area families in need this holiday season. If you would like to donate food, please bring it to the church before Wednesday. If you know of a family in need, please contact the church office ASAP with name, number in family and sex/ages of children. Thank you. Shoe Boxes Monday morning praise and thank you. I want to thank the many people who donated to this year's Operation Christmas Child shoe box ministries. The story of fishes and Loaves in the bible really came to mind late yesterday afternoon as the last boxes were put together. We started out thinking 75 then maybe a hundred final total was 156 boxes, praise God. We wanted to thank the following people for their special efforts to bring this mission to final completion; Debbie Nelson Watkins, Karla Kane, Lori Johnson, Angie Bayles Tracy, Lisa Roberts, Mary Drone and her granddaughter Tiana. Also the Sunday School teachers and students were key components of this effort. Thank you all again and whatever face you played in this mission that friend. Pleasant Hill Coat Drive We once again will be collecting coats, gloves and hats for the children of Pleasant Hill School. There is a box in the lobby of the church. Donations will be delivered to the school January 16. Angel Tree The tree in the sanctuary is designated as our angel tree. Please bring angels to place on the tree in remembrance of loved ones. Everyone can bring as many as you wish. Let s fill the tree with angels this Christmas!
