PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY LAND OCTOBER 4-14,2014 Spiritual Leader: Father Paul F. deladurantaye, KHS Secretary for Religious Education and the Sacred Liturgy, Diocese of Arlington, VA Pilgrimge Coordinator: Jeannie Presley, LC*HS... "The Gospel message takes on a new immediacy and stronger color when one walks in the places where Jesus spoke and sees the landscapes that Jesus saw. In fact, the geography and local customs so influence some pages of the Bible that it is difficult to understand them without having seen this land"...

Walking the Palm Sunday Road, we visit and celebrate MASS IN DOMINUS FLEVIT CHURCH. There we have a wonderful panoramic view of the City of Jerusalem. At the bottom ofmt. The Blessed Mother went in haste here to visit her cousin Elizabeth. Our devotions will be within the Church of the Visitation, where we praise God with the Magnificat. We also visit the Church ofst. John the Baptist. After dinner we plan a return to the Church of All Nations next to tne Garden ofgethsemane for a Holy Hour with an opportunity for Confession. B & D JERUSALEM TUESDAY, OCTOBER 7 - This morning we go to the sacred Jewish Temple area, the Western Wall or Wailing Wall, where devout Jews offer up prayers at these remaining holy stones of the glorious Second Temple. Now the only structures standing on the Temple Mount are the Moslem Shrines of the Dome of the Rock and Mosque el Aqsa. Then at a nearby site a special tour will be at the City of David -- the heart of ancient Jerusalem, the City of Kings and Prophets, where books of the Bible were written. Originally the City was built around a water source called Gihon Spring, down the southeastern hill from the Temple Mount. Recent excavations have brought to light many ancient wonders. We have time for lunch on our own. Then we drive to the Mt. Zion area of the Old City, arriving at the Church of St. Peter in Gallicantu, built over the spot where Our Lord was held in the dungeon ofcaiphas' house. We celebrate MASS IN THE CHURCH OF ST. PETER IN GALL1CANTU. Nearby we pay a visit to the traditional site of the Upper Room, scene of the Last Supper, and then Our Lord's appearance on Easter Sunday evening, as well as the Coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday. Also close by is Dormition Abbey Church that honors the passage of Our Lady from this life to Heaven. Late afternoon we walk into the Old City to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to make our SOLEMN ENTRY INTO THE TOMB OF JESUS. B & D JERUSALEM ER 8 - Traveling a short distance south of Jerusalem, we arrive in Bethlehem to visit the Holy Grotto of the Nativity, the Manger and the Grotto of St. Jerome. We celebrate HOLY MASS in the Franciscan Church of St. Catherine adjacent to the Grotto of the Nativity and scene of Bethlehem's Midnight Mass. A special experience will be a visit to Bethlehem University, where we will meet students, faculty and its Christian Brothers directors. This is the only Christian University in Palestine. It provides higher education to both Christians and Muslims. Our lunch is provided by their hotel management faculty. In the countryside we visit the Shepherds Fields of Boaz, remembering the angels' glad tidings to the shepherds. We will look for the opportunity to stop at a Bethlehem store where we can see a variety of hand-crafted olive wood religious carvings and othe customized goods. B, L(lunch) & D JERUSALEM THURSDAY, OCTOBER 9 - Early this morning we celebrate MASS ON CALVARY WITHIN THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE. After breakfast we walk into the Old City and in a few minutes we

are at the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Jerusalem and the headquarters of His Beatitude, the Latin Rite Patriarch. A Reception will arranged to meet with him, and at this meeting our members of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre will receive a PILGRIM'S SHELL. This afternoon we enter the Old City at St. Stephen's Gate where our first stop is at the Church ofst. Anne and the Pools of Bethesda. Next we visit the Chapel of Flagellation in preparation for making the Way of the Cross. We follow the Via Dolorosa, carrying a wooden cross along the streets among the markets and shops, following Jesus on His journey to Calvary. We complete our devotions at the Tomb of Jesus in Holy Sepulchre Church. This evening we go out for a special Middle Eastern dinner. B & 0 JERUSALEM FRIDAY, OCTOBER 10 - After check-out we drive to Bethany Parish Church that is adjacent to the Tomb of Lazarus. Here we celebrate HOLY MASS IN THE CHURCH OF ST. LAZARUS. Our journey then takes us down to the level of the Dead Sea, lowest spot on the earth. The Jordan River flows into the Dead Sea, and at its banks a little to the north of the Dead Sea we stop at a site that commemorates the scene of St. John's Baptism of the Lord. Here we renew our own Baptismal Promises. ext we visit Qum ran, site of the Dead Sea scrolls discovery and ancient ruins of the Essene Community. Here we have a tour and lunch will be provided. Then we go to the Dead Sea. We can even take the opportunity for a dip in these mineral rich waters. We continue on north through the fertile Jordan River Valley until we reach the Sea of Galilee, where we check in at our hotel in Tiberias located directly on that Sea. B, L & 0 TIBERI AS SATURDAY, OCTOBER 11 - This morning we drive north to reach Caesaea Philippi, where Peter proclaimed his faith in Jesus as "Christ, Son of the Living God." Our Lord in response promised Peter the Keys of the Kingdom in his leadership role as Vicar of Christ on earth. Later back along the shore of the Sea of Galilee we stop at the Church of Primacy of Peter, the place where our Lord bestowed upon Peter the role of leadership of the Church. Here we will pray for the intentions of the Holy Father. Included today will be a lunch of ST. PETER Fish. We then drive up a hill called Mt. Beatitides, which overlooks the Sea of Galilee, and where Jesus preached His Sermon on the Mount. Nearby, also on the Lake Shore, we visit the site of Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes. Then we visit Capernaum, known as the Second City of Jesus, where we willi see the ruins of the second century Synagogue (John: 6), and the ancient structure of the House of Peter. Tabor, where Jesus took Peter, James and John and was gloriously Transfigured in their sight. In the church at the top we celebrate MASS fn THE BASILICA OF THE TRANSFIGURATION. Later we embark on a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee, and reflect on the scripture passages of Jesus and His Apostles that took place on these waters. At the place where we disembark we go into a museum that houses a fishing boat that was discovered buried at the bottom of the lake. It is 2000 years old and very typical of boats used by the Apostles who had been fishemen. At this same stop in the Kibbutz ofnofginnosar we can find a bite to eat on our own. The latter part of this day is for relaxation and reflection on our pilgrimage journey. B & 0 TIBERIAS MONDAY, OCTOBER 13 - This morning after check-out we drive to Cana. Here we recall the scene of Our Lord's first miracle, remembering His Blessed Mother's words, "Do what ever He tells you." The opportunity for couples to renew their Marriage Vows will be provided. Then it is a short drive to Nazareth, where Jesus spent most of His Life. We go to its beautiful Basilica and celebrate HOLY MASS in the Upper Church of the BASILICA OF THE ANNUNCIATION. At the Grotto of the Annunciaton we venerate the very spot where the Word Was Made Flesh. We will also visit the St. Joseph's Workshop nearby. After our full lunch, which will be provided in Nazareth, we drive up the Carmel Mountain Range, which borders the Mediterranean. There we visit Stella Maris, the largest monastery of the Carmelite Order and its headquarters. Here we see the Cave of Elijah. Early this evening we have a light meal together in a restaurant on the north side of Tel Aviv. Then we head to the airport for our flight home, departing just before midnight.
