Click here NAD Ministerial Discuss Subscribe Archive Accountability with Self Awareness Becoming self aware is a journey of a lifetime. This can clearly be seen in the life journey and ministry of the apostle Peter in the Bible. Peter was not self aware and only became more aware of himself after his fall and failure. This led to his repentance, forgiveness, and conversion. (Luke 22:31 34, John 21:15 19 & Christ Triumphant p. 276.) Pastors who have an understanding of how they are perceived externally and how they view themselves internally is to have a degree of self awareness. Having self awareness and emotional intelligence can actually help pastors align their strengths and development areas toward a much more proficient ministry. It will also help them to be more aware of those they need around them on their 1
ministry teams. A need of growth in the skill of self awareness can be seen through these attributes. Arrogance Defensiveness Doesn't get any feedback Too much success Blames others Shuts down in the face of criticism Spends too much time on reflection before acting Sways too much based on feedback Unable to learn from mistakes Doesn't take the time to reflect on experience Too modest Too self critical Socrates said it long ago, "know thyself." John Erikson, a Canadian psychologist said, "The more you know yourself, the more patience you have for what you see in others." Those who are desirous to be selfaware are inevitably much more teachable and desirous to grow. In the book "FYI For Your Improvement: Competencies Development Guide," by Korn Ferry says, using a combination of feedback and reflection helps to gain productive insight into personal strengths and weaknesses. Let us value self awareness more by holding each other accountable. Please welcome John Grys as the new NAD Ministerial Associate for Pastoral Development 2
