Order of Service The Gathering Please stand as the Civic Procession enters the church Processional Hymn, during which standards may be presented Now thank we all our God, with heart and hands and voices, who wondrous things hath done, in whom his world rejoices; who from our mother's arms hath blessed us on our way with countless gifts of love, and still is ours today. O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us, with ever-joyful hearts and blessèd peace to cheer us; and keep us in his grace, and guide us when perplexed, and free us from all ills in this world and the next. All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given, the Son, and Holy Ghost, supreme in highest heaven, the one eternal God, whom earth and heaven adore; for thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore. Martin Rinkart, tr Catherine Winkworth 1
Welcome and introduction Prayers of Penitence Priest We confess our sin, and the sins of our society, in the misuse of God's creation. Priest God our Father, we are sorry for the times when we have used your gifts carelessly, and acted ungratefully. Hear our prayer, and in your mercy: All forgive us and help us. Priest We enjoy the fruits of the harvest, but sometimes forget that you have given them to us. Father, in your mercy: All forgive us and help us. Priest We belong to a people who are full and satisfied, but ignore the cry of the hungry. Father, in your mercy: All forgive us and help us. Priest We are thoughtless, and do not care enough for the world you have made. Father, in your mercy: All forgive us and help us. Priest We store up goods for ourselves alone, as if there were no God and no heaven. Father, in your mercy: All forgive us and help us. The priest pronounces the assurance of forgiveness 2
Hymn of thanksgiving All people that on earth do dwell, sing to the Lord with cheerful voice: him serve with mirth,1 his praise forth tell, come ye before him and rejoice. The Lord, ye know, is God indeed; without our aid he did us make: we are his folk, he doth us feed, and for his sheep he doth us take. O enter then his gates with praise, approach with joy his courts unto; praise, laud, and bless his Name always, for it is seemly so to do. For why? the Lord our God is good, his mercy is for ever sure; his truth at all times firmly stood, and shall from age to age endure. To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, the God whom heaven and earth adore, from men and from the angel host be praise and glory evermore. William Kethe 3
The Word of God Reading: John 13: 1-15, Jesus Washes the Disciples Feet Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. The devil had already put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon Iscariot to betray him. And during supper Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, Lord, are you going to wash my feet? Jesus answered, You do not know now what I am doing, but later you will understand. Peter said to him, You will never wash my feet. Jesus answered, Unless I wash you, you have no share with me. Simon Peter said to him, Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head! Jesus said to him, One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you. For he knew who was to betray him; for this reason he said, Not all of you are clean. After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another s feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. Sermon The Rev Mark Warrick BSc BCS, Mayor s Chaplain 4
Hymn I vow to thee, my country all earthly things above Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love; The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test, That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best; The love that never falters, the love that pays the price, The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice. And there s another country, I ve heard of long ago Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; We may not count her armies, we may not see her King; Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace. Cecil Spring Rice The Prayers Prayers, led by the Mayor The Lord s Prayer Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. 5
And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Choir Anthem Hymn, during which the standards may be collected: And did those feet in ancient time walk upon England's mountains green? And was the holy Lamb of God on England's pleasant pastures seen? And did the countenance divine shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here among these dark satanic mills? Bring me my bow of burning gold! Bring me my arrows of desire! Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold! Bring me my chariot of fire! I will not cease from mental fight, nor shall my sword sleep in my hand, till we have built Jerusalem in England's green and pleasant land. William Blake 6
Final prayer and blessing The National Anthem God save our gracious Queen, long live our noble Queen, God save the Queen! Send her victorious, happy and glorious, long to reign over us, God save the Queen! Thy choicest gifts in store on her be pleased to pour, long may she reign: may she defend our laws, and ever give us cause to sing with heart and voice God save the Queen! The Sending Out Nor on this land alone, but be God's mercies known from shore to shore: Lord, make the nations see that men should brothers be, and form one family the wide world o'er.
